Something I've wondered lately. I went through the process with Avanti back in 2022/2023, and any test I passed for them would be valid for five years. However I've heard TPE only have three-year validity, so I assume that I'd be expected to sit any shared tests over again and not just the one I failed since it's been over that length of time?
It's three years so you would have to resit each and every test for TPE

I see your point, but I'm in a talent pool for 2 different companies so I think it may be a bit rash to take them again :(
That's actually quite understandable to be honest. I think a lot of people would advise not compromising a place in a talent bank, so if you're in two then I hope you'll get a proper job offer soon.

Not surprised to be honest, and not ideal, but nothing that was worth it ever came easily. I can at least go in knowing what to expect this time around.

2 years then... But they have recently upped it to 4 or 5 I believe, due to the amount of candidates they had in pools.

Are you sure it’s not still 2 years of TFW. I thought the extension was just for people already in the pool because they have been delayed due to no fault of their own

Thankyou me too, been a long process that's for sure! I hope the same for you too, it's not easy sitting on full passes for 3 years you do start to think whether it's going to happen or not. But you just have to keep trying don't you.

Well last advert I applied for at TFW I'm sure it said something about accepting psychometric passes up to 5 years... But I could be completely wrong! As with anyone's word on this forum, take it with a pinch of salt.

Just found a screenshot I took from a previous job advert, could be that you are right regards it just being talent pool candidates however that would seem odd to me. Why not just extend it for everyone?

Interesting. I read that as the talent pool itself as opposed to the psychometric but like you say who knows. Mine are just over 3 years old now

I think the theory is that people are being held in the pool because of no fault of their own so it’s not fair to make them resist the test

I've recently completed the error checking test for a different application and I managed to answer 30 question and I confident that I didn't make any mistakes does anybody know if that is a good pass mark or not

Nobody knows for sure if it's a good pass mark or not simply because nobody knows what the pass marks are and therefore can't measure your results against it. You could very well be one point above the pass mark which would be a close pass, or twenty which would be a great one. Unfortunately you won't know by how much you passed, just whether you have or haven't.

My understanding is that there isn't a pass mark but instead the Company takes the top 30% of scores then says no to all others.

That's for GWR, anyway. But probably a similar thought process for other companies doing error checking tests.

I would say that's highly unlikely as that means there isn't a standard they expect. Something which I highly doubt given the rest of testing is all about scores/standardisation.

It's a good way to trim down 1000s of applications to 100s without human intervention so makes sense to me. This is about scores but falls outside the standards required by the ORR for train driver assessments. It's a company filter.

Interviewers told me and another at GWR DMI about the top 30% for error checking. So I'm not sure why they'd make that up.

It's largely correct.

There is a basic standard, but if an overwhelming number of applicants meet the standard, then they will only take the top percentage further through the process.

Yes I agree that can happen. It doesn't mean the top 30% go through regardless of score. It's more a case of only having maximum space for x number of applicants in the next stage.

I'm not sure if anyone else has received an email, but I know there has been an email sent out for a June 2026 course. This was sent to someone who applied back in July 2025 and was placed in the talent pool in the September.

That's interesting, I'm currently waiting for a date for a DMI so perhaps will see some progress if there's a new cohort in June 2026.

I remember it being similar with Avanti. They had stage 1 tests in the morning and evening at Crewe (I was in the morning group) though I'm not sure how it worked with stage 2. Elsewhere for TPE, I once heard that stage 1 took place in the morning session and those who didn't make the grade were sent home while those who did moved on to stage 2, but by the sounds of it that's not really the case. No matter, I'll just focus on those moments when they come.
Jan’25 applications were one day, but it was internal only. So I think it is dependent on it being advertised externally and number of applicants
No, I've had feedback calls with OPC and asked. They will give quite detailed information but not scores.

Last time the vacancies were advertised in June and testing took place between end of September and November. So quite likely 2 months
June applicant testing started in August.

The course started on 3rd November but they continued to test and interview for the course beginning in March

Got a rejection email earlier today for the Jan 26 recruitment for Liverpool. Can't say I didn't see it coming to be honest. I don't think it was the psychometrics, I think it was the answers on the AI interview but otherwise not a clue. Oh well, hopefully another day.

Same here for sheffield. Probably the same reasons as you too!

Research about the company, as a whole and your local depot. Local - tractions, routes, any answers that you can relate to through experience (i.e. I work through Preston every workday in my current role as a conductor, so I knew quite a bit about the station and its workings). Whole company - learn plenty of information from the 'about us' webpage (company plan, vision and values, etc).

Make sure you're detailed with your answers, go in with examples that you can use, as always, use the STAR method.

I'll always say, be honest too. If you've got a really good example, but it highlights an error you made (as long as it is not safety critical) use it but show how you have learnt and developed from it. Nobody is perfect, and I used an example or two where I had a lack of knowledge/made a mistake. It helps bring across your personality too.

Received an invitation for assessment centre today! This was for the Sheffield vacancy advertised in January. Never got through the paper soft before so I’m a bit nervous about messing it up! Have read through the practice material - the email they send you has the papa and computer tests separated out but when you book the assessment centre date (a morning or afternoon) it gives you the same PDF but together so I’m a little unsure whether to just focus on paper for now! Anyone else received the email?

If it was a choice between morning and afternoon you will only be sitting the paper testing. Otherwise it would be a full day.
