Patchy, and it can differ between the two sets of the train. On Saturday neither portion received the advertised offering, however one set received an at seat service of cold sandwiches, snacks and alcohol and the other portion were denied any alcohol as apparently it was against policy to serve it… other passengers have been directed to the shop to claim their complementaries.

I think you’d be lucky to get the full advertised catering offer, but I’ve seen evidence that some passengers have actually received that.

You’ll probably get a table to yourself in Standard though so maybe just save £23 and buy some decent food and drink instead.
Thanks, that pretty much confirms my thoughts/worries.

I do actually have a forward facing window table seat booked for both legs so buying my own food and drink does sound like the safer option.

I see the 0923 ex Carlisle today is a single 5 car unit (805012) and departed Carlisle 22 down (Possibly held due to the 0910 arrival from Glasgow arriving 28 down?)

Yes, 09:23 was held to allow connection from the Glasgow arrival.

I did the diversion yesterday to get up to Edinburgh. I took the 11:49 Crewe to Carlisle and was very happy. Even arrived early into Carlisle which was lovely.

How reliable has the provision of the full 1st class service been on these diversions?

I'm booked on the 0923 ex Carlisle and 1407 ex Preston tomorrow and debating with myself if it is worth upgrading or not. Currently looks like Seatfrog have upgrades for £23 each way but I'm worried that the catering offer may not be available.

I’m on this morning’s 0923 from Carlisle and the service in First has been good so far. I boarded at 0850 and I’d been brought coffee and porridge by the booked departure time. But we were 22 late departing as were waiting for a delayed Pendolino come in from Glasgow. Looks like we might get delayed even more if we get stuck behind the Clitheroe-Blackburn stopper.

The 1007 from Preston is still there now, 25 minutes down and counting. Does anyone know what's going on?

Edit: it was waiting for the incoming train from Carlisle which was 33 minutes late for some reason arriving into Preston.

I joined 1Z86 at Preston this morning (0807 departure) . An excellent run across , clipping the heels of the 748 ex Leeds from Garsdale and an early arrival into Carlisle.

There was no first class at seat service in either unit , announced as shop only . It's hit and miss the on board catering . I was in the front most standard coach , about a dozen in there and take your pick of tables . Seat reservation displays not working but otherwise impressed with the Avanti Hitachis ...what a difference having comfier seats than the upholstered planks of wood in the Azumas . No ticket checks.

Sadly you were correct about getting stuffed at Clitheroe , following the stopper to Blackburn which has led to the 1007 from Preston to Carlisle departing around 30 minutes late waiting for the 2nd unit .

Is there any benefit to going in the rear or front set when in Standard? Do you get exactly the same experience in both?

I didn’t realise it was. Why is it blocked? I didn’t think they would bother with the diversions again after how these current ones have gone.
It won't be freezing cold for a start.

You will arrive slightly earlier in the front set.

Largely the relative cleanliness of the windows, I would say! If you're in the rear seat, you might have your ticket checked....because that's where the Train Manager rides. If you're in the front set, you definitely won't have your ticket checked, but you should have the shop open.

We did. Before the doors were opened, we were attached to another 5 car set for the 1207 return journey to Carlisle.

We only stopped twice. For about 3 minutes at Whalley (the Clitheroe stopper was well ahead of us, but how apart are the signals?) and about another 3 minutes at the Faringdon Curve, I presume waiting for a path on to the WCML.

Highlight of trip: being served a toasted teacake at my seat as we travelled over the Ribblehead viaduct.

Northbound signals are one around half a mile after Daisyfield Junction, one at Langho then one at Clitheroe.

Southbound Clitheroe, Whalley and one not far from the northbound one in the Bastwell area of Blackburn.

Thank you. That explains the stop at Whalley heading south.

The loadings are, to my untrained eye, showing the rise of bashing over recent years.

I did Preston-Carlisle via the S&C on Easter Saturday 2006. I was the only person in the penultimate carriage of the Virgin Voyager and there was only 1 person in the last carriage.

On my service today, first class was 80% occupied and the adjacent standard carriage was at least 60% full.

(I cant’t remember if the Gensheet Yahoo group was running back in 2006, but the only other place to get gen that I knew of was on the uk.railway Usenet group.)

In that case you are very lucky that the doors opened for you at all after attaching!

Today I witnessed the 1132 Chester to Euston arrive at Crewe on time, then lose 17 mins in platform 6. From what I saw they couldn't get the doors to close and that was just a single set!

(It also caused a hasty scramble from pfm 6 to 12 for the 1202 to Liverpool as the 10-car NR train from Euston was put into 11. Several people for the Liverpool arrived on the platform too late...)

It may also be because nearly 20 years worth of safeguarded employees have retired with 1st class passes. I did read a comment from a 1st Class host about 'serving people who had paid' somewhere earlier in this thread.

I was told quite a while ago that Virgin (trains) gave their serving employees first class after just 10 years, and last week I was told by a retired (non-railway) decorator that he had Avanti (only) privileges because his daughter worked for Virgin! Presumably like the airlines' wider family and friends bonuses...

I note that three Lancaster-Euston service have run in the mornings during this period. Why couldn’t more Avanti services have started from back at Lancaster or even Oxenholme?

The last time I travelled this line was in 2006 on a return leg to Preston, aboard a Class 57‑hauled Virgin Pendolino bound for Euston that started from Carlisle. That spring afternoon ride sticks in my memory, the 8 or 9 coach set carried only a handful of passengers.

Back then the blockade was only north of Oxenholme so it was possible to travel outbound on Northern Pacer from Lancaster via Giggleswick. I had a very leisurely connection time to walk over to Settle and pick up a Northern 156 from Leeds to Carlisle.

Today, with the influence of YouTube channels, social media, Real Train Times, and forums like this, the diverted Avanti service is seemingly far more visible. It suggests why loading might be slightly higher for some timings, granted it's not peak season for tourism.

Most likely because that the available Preston-based crews were working to Carlisle and back. These 3 are presumably normally worked by crews from there or further south and don't do the usual changeover at PRE.

Caught the 08:07 from Preston this morning.

Bacon rolls (including Gluten Free) had ran out before Hellifield in the rear unit, and that was with being restocked at Preston!

Arrived into Carlisle about 8 early though, even with what seemed a slow run. Stopped at Blea Moor box and slowed right down a few other times.

I was on the 09:23 ex Carlisle this morning and was first to the shop on departure and managed to get the only bacon roll!

This starts to reminds me of when I did the Enterprise from Belfast to Dublin and three or four of us ordered burgers but only one of us could have cheese on their burger because they ran out cheese at that point

Meanwhile Avanti will ironically think that demand for the said item in the Shop is very low because they've been in such short supply.

Hopefully the catering members of Staff pass on feedback on in demand items which customers have been unable to obtain.

Yes I was on the 0807 from Preston this morning too (again!), but opted for the front unit (013) as that had clean windows you could actually see out of given the grubby external state of the back set (008). Odd that they ran out as there was an announcement before departure that both shops were shut due to taking delivery of a large order ...clearly not breakfast items . Lightly loaded ; I was in the centre coach with just 3 other passengers, the standard coach in front had about a dozen and first seemed to be about half full .

There is loads of padding in the timings...we had caught up the 748 Leeds to Carlisle service by Blea Moor so we were ambling along between the signalling sections . Overall a pleasant journey with the guard again making clear announcements approaching Carlisle for those with onward connections.

I was impressed on Monday that the guard made announcements as we passed south through Dent that we had the Blea Moor Tunnel and the Ribblehead Viaduct coming up.

A quick phone call to the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, and they could have met the train at Garsdale or Dent with a supply of fresh cheese. :D

Err....I think it may have taken a while to get the cheese from Hawes to Belfast! ;)

Windows were so clean on my original unit but not on the one we were transferred to after it was declared a failure sadly. First world problems I know and done the S&C so many times before that it was no big deal.
