Just with only a single unit in service, no more Guards can be signed off as fully competent as they need to of used the 2D Switch in a multiple formation to have Class 175 added to their Licence.
I believe the morning training runs (non-passenger) are running in multiple formation to account for this.

Someone's had a good idea this week. Start the 175 passenger train from platform 3 at Plymouth and no shunting. Plenty of time before the Gunnislake train is due back.
Still only using 175001 in passenger service.

I was onboard from Truro today, the delayed 1502 to Penzance. After about 15 minutes waiting onboard at the station an announcement came through that due to a problem with the doors we should get off and await the next service and I see this train was cancelled.

That's not great, maybe if GWR can use another unit they should as 001 seems to be a bit hit or miss at the moment.

Take two has been scheduled for Tuesday next week:

This is an odd move and it has stops when it gains coaches and loses coaches. I'll try and catch it on CoastCams at Dawlish at 1440hrs.

Considering it's speed restricted it'll be stopped along the way to find the right slot for the path. I believe it's 175010 being moved.

Hi, I`m interested to know if you have any further details surrounding the potential door problem or problems that caused the unit to fail as it was unusual for a 175 to be withdrawn from traffic with a door issue as there was usually a work around to keep it in service unless it was a No1 end bodyside door issue that couldn`t be rectified easily or "a wrong side failure" which was extremely rare.

Door faults were varied but mostly fell into a small number of categories, all or one bodyside door fails to arm and open/fails to close correctly as requested, doors access/egress handle issues usually not set correctly and cab and bodyside doors can have unrelated faults.

Majority of doors faults were usually easily rectifiable in service for unit to continue to a maintenance facility or End of day.

I did notice in your picture that both cars bodyside hazard lights were illuminated but this is not unusual in a platform environment.

Look forward to any further information that you may have, no matter how insignificant. Thanks.

Are any more 3 car sets due to head west anytime soon?
There was a path in last Friday but I reckon it was probably curtailed due to the poor weather conditions last week. If anything I'd hope a 3 car set moves down this week or next, just a guess!

We had been replatformed from 2 to 3 at Truro, in itself fairly unusual going towards Penzance. The train pulls in and there's initially a good 2 or 3 minutes wait before the doors are released and passengers get off and those waiting, like myself board. After around 5 minutes a non specific announcement says that we hope to be on the move soon. Staff are seen on the platform walking along the 2 carriages backwards and forwards. After around 10 minutes the next announcement advises that the next train to Penzance is shortly due on platform 2 and due to a problem closing the doors this train wouldn't be departing anytime soon (I subsequently saw it had been cancelled) and that we should make our way back to platform 2 to await that departure. It completed a difficult day as my tickets in the morning had been a return from St. Erth to Falmouth and approaching Truro at just after 11 a.m. I saw online that a signalling problem meant no trains to Falmouth for a couple of hours, so a quick change of plans for us!

Thanks for the reply and much appreciated.

From what you observed and unusually there seems to have been 2 problems, initially arming the doors for release but we don`t know if the doors arming siren was heard repeatedly as they were trying and then the doors/door closing problem and if a door closing hustle alarm was continually sounding even with a door that looked closed or if a door had not fully closed plus if both or individual cars bodyside hazard light were lit at the time ? Possible crew unfamiliarity with 175 fleet but that is based on nothing really.

Just seen a photo of a drag on Facebook, 175010 going to Penzance behind a 37, can someone explain what the thick black cable is coming out of the cab window connecting to the coupler?

Link below, it shows as public so should be viewable.

It is the air brake cable, the brakes on the unit itself will not be operable, hence the two barrier wagons mainy for brake force purposes and the fact that the train is running Class 7.

Ah okay thanks, where does the brake cable lead to once inside the cab?

5V84 Wolverton - Laira attempt 2 this Friday, 3 car unit(s?) on the way, hopefully.
Late start. Let's hope they are in condition for passenger service. Got the weekend to fix them. Yesterday 175001 ran a training run but was replaced by a 150 for the 1340 Plymouth- Penzance and back. Not one of the other three refurbished units at Laira has run in passenger service AFAIK.

Looks like 175003 is running in passenger service today (Thursday 15 January 2026) with the 13.40 from Plymouth to Penzance. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:P22971/2026-01-15/detailed#allox_id=0

It will be the 15.52 from Penzance back to Plymouth. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:P23144/2026-01-15/detailed#allox_id=0
It's about time another was used. Today Paignton -Exmouth two short formed 150s. Barnstaple a two car 158. There are only 10 150s operating the Devon and Cornwall branches and thats's with St Ives and Looe operating with buses. The other 150s must be on the main line or defective.
What's wrong with the 175s coming out of Wolverton that they have to send an Ely 175010 to Long Rock?

Wales (sometimes in England), thanks for replying!
Says 175001...
The allocation changed from 175003 to 175001, just like it did for the week of 175 service in December 2025.

Just to be clear, the allocation was changed from 175003 to 175001, so as far as I know, it's still only 175001 that has been in service so far.

That’s what he’s saying. They need to get more into service sharpish.

The only reason it was changed back to 175001 this afternoon, was due to having a few faults that needed to be seen to. Also 175001 was playing up this morning so was sent back to Laira to be rectified, which is just as well it was as 003 needed sorting.
So today no more Guards fully signed off due to 2 Car formation on the training run.

So what are they paying Wolverton for?? Arthur Daley must be working for the leasing company.
