Class 175s to GWR

The intention is to do it, but if it has actually happened yet I don't know.

I think someone mentioned clearing to Paignton & Exmouth too, and possibly also Taunton (latter because of the new intermediate stations under construction). More to allow unplanned fleet alternatives during disruption than for any scheduled use.
Stated by GWR in the current Modern Railways that their primary routes will be Penzance - Plymouth/Exeter and Exeter - Barnstaple/Okehampton/Paignton.

They'll be cleared for diversions/occasional work on Par - Newquay, Truro - Falmouth and Exeter - Taunton via Yeovil and Castle Cary (ie not via Tiverton).

Exmouth is shown as TBC.

Also recognised that the initial 2-car trains on the Cornish mainline are going to cause problems.

Are they cleared for Barnstaple/Okehampton/Axminster
No, not currently cleared up there for passenger services.

The latest I know is they will eventually be cleared on the following routes:

- Truro to Falmouth
- Par to Newquay
- Newton Abbot to Paignton
- Exeter SD to Okehampton/Barnstaple/Exmouth/Axminster

This is in addition to Exeter SD to Penzance which is already cleared for passenger services.

175s will be cleared north of Exeter SD upto Bristol but only for non-passenger movements I believe (in theory they are cleared anywhere a 180 used to go but this is the railway!)

With regards to them being used before Christmas, then not, it seems this was planned, with the previous diagram (LA831) going back to 175 operation from today. This is from the 175 project update page which is internal.

I am not surprised. The 175 from the time table change has become a token run to keep a promise they would be in passenger service in 2025. The work to get them running was harder than they thought. The public are now told to expect a "Mexican wave" (Modern Railways Jan 2026 p66) of trains arriving in 2026.

Looks as if it has been cancelled:

Oh dear... :s
Due to a problem with the train :frown: If anyone in here who knows what that problem is could let us know, that would be appreciated.

Fire alarm sounding on train in Plymouth, no actual fire but enough to cancel the service. Also there are unverified reports that the 175 drag scheduled for tomorrow from Ely to Penzance is cancelled. Loco failure being cited as the reason.

The outbound of two 37s plus barriers - 5L46 - hasn’t run today which will mean the drag tomorrow doesn’t happen. 37501 was the failure today apparently.

Are the 175s like the 14x & 15x units in that after the fire alarms sound for so many seconds the fire bottles discharge....and the unit becomes a total demic?

I worked on 180s for a few years during my maintenance apprenticeship, assuming 175s use the same principals (which you would hope they do), when the TMS has a fault notification, the fire bell goes off to alert staff to said fault. Usually wasn't fire related (it even went off for small stuff like toilets malfunctioning).

Again, with the preface that I'm only going off what 180s done, if it was just a fault notification fire bell activation, they could ring for ages. Was a common occurrence that you would leave a 180 idling, come back to it 20 minutes later and the fire bell had being blaring for the full 20 minutes.

Fire bells ringing on a 175 could be for a number of reasons but most commonly caused by flat 24v batteries on one particular car especially if the unit had been left stabled, a cab not keyed in and engines then left to "time out" approximately 40 mins if a cab is not keyed back in within this time, and unit then left to "automatically load shed and self trip" which should occur within 20 mins after engine time out. More prevalent in cold weather is if either the auto or manual fire bottle has low pressure causing bells to ring.

Other reasons for ringing fire bells include an electrical issue e.g a relay not energised or high resistance contact within a relay, primary or secondary fire ring failures and depending on the type of fire ring failure auto fire bottle would discharge or not if unit is below 5 mph, fire system CB tripped.

The TMS is notified of which particular car has the fire system fault and or flat 24v batteries.

It looks like 175001+175009 worked to Penzance training and later 175001 did the 1340 passenger while 175009 went back Laira.

First redone 175/1(s?) coming down then. Wolverton have no 175/0s up there currently.

Personally as it was always my favourite unit of the lot, I'm hoping 175113 comes down. It'll most likely be one of the ones that went there first, though!

Of the four refurbished 175s at Laira; only 175001 seems to be trusted in passenger service. There is no rotation. Somethings wrong???

2 out of 7 175/0 available. Others are on the stop list for a wide variety of reasons but nothing wildly different to what I’d expect to see on the stop lists for the other traction types. Nothing to break out the tin foil hats for!
I suspect as there’s only one unit required for passenger service a day and 175001 appears to be fairly decent then that will be the go to choice.

I think it's been announced that a second 175 diagram will be introduced this month and a third in February.

I presume you mean passenger workings. There are already three working diagrams but only one diagram has the current passenger workings on it. The other two diagrams are all ECS training runs.

What's the other available 175? 175003?

Just with only a single unit in service, no more Guards can be signed off as fully competent as they need to of used the 2D Switch in a multiple formation to have Class 175 added to their Licence.

Does anyone have any insider depot knowledge of the defects individual units have on the stop list ?

Take two has been scheduled for Tuesday next week:

If this runs today; lets hope it/they are in public serviceable condition as only 175001 seems to be.
Is this why one or maybe two being taking from Ely to Penzance to do the work?
