Not always. There may be a drainage ditch or underground drain running parallel to the line(s). There may also be the main cable route for the signalling and telecommunications cables. Which can be tricky if these are in a underground route.

Foundations need to be constructed and the type depends on the local ground conditions. And if there are embankments involved or the railway is in a cutting, substantial earth works may be needed.
And if any signalling alterations are needed, design, installation and testing are expensive long-lead items.

Exactly. Those bits (foundations, signalling, etc., etc.) are outwith 'plonking the platform down'. Craning in a prefabricated structure is the 'easy' (almost-)final step in a much bigger, costly process.

Why does it take so long and cost so much to build stations in the UK
Planforms can be ore fabricated off site and just craned into place and the same for footbridges
Your location is given as Ipswich. Take a trip to Stowmarket and have a look at the work going on there to build a new footbridge.

Assume Blyth Bebside opens as planned tomorrow. Realtime Trains has public services showing (rather than 'service stop unadvertised') but I won't be able to update the table until Monday.

I can confirm Blyth Bebside opened as planned today and trains have now started to call there, having just got off the first one.

Beaulieu Park opened.

Cowley, Littlemore and Waterbeach added to #1.

Cowley and Littlemore (previously referred to as Oxford Science Park) have a suggested opening date of 2030 (based on a quote from the council leader in a press article). See the linked thread for full discussion.

Waterbeach is a relocation of the current station. Construction of a nearby road is expected to start in 2025, with work at the new station starting in 2026 and expected to complete the following year.

There is a campaign to prevent the existing Waterbeach station closing / the two stations are about 2.5km apart.

Out of curiosity, what about new stations which are on Network Rail lines but will be
used solely by light rail services?

I'm thinking specifically about 'Magna' in Rotherham, which as far as I am aware
is expected to open next January:

MARK
An interesting question.

Will it have a 'three letter code'?

Using old fashioned terminology will it be served / operated / managed by a TOC, as successors to British Rail and predecessors to Great British Railways? Will it feature as an asset to be maintained / funded on a Network Rail / TOC / GBR list?

There is an element of hair splitting between 'proper railway stations', 'tram-train stations' (halts?), pure 'light rail stations' and probably other variants. I don't add proposed London Underground stations to the table but I would add proposed London Overground stations. I wouldn't add proposed pure light rail / tram stations to the list (for example the now complete Blackpool Tram extension to Blackpool North), nor stations on preserved / heritage lines.

Butetown (Loudoun Square) perhaps has similar characteristics. Will it open as a proper railway station or as some kind of South Wales Metro halt?

A line (of 1,435mm width) has to be drawn somewhere to keep things manageable. Look at the number of proposals Joe Brown has to keep track of to keep the Baker Rail Atlas up-to-date.

London Underground does have three letter codes eg: EAH East Ham, ELP Elm Park

I did some work on this project a while ago. All the stations/stops in the tram train route have three-letter codes, so I expect Magna will. It’s a station, rather than a stop, as it’s on the heavy rail lines, with lifts and offset platforms to deter people crossing the tracks.

You were so very kind as to continue the running of this particular thread quite some years ago after ill health at the time saw my inability to continue assisting the running of it and I totally agree with your sentiments above on what this particular thread should concern itself with.

It already does. MAB.

For what it's worth, my view is that anything governed by ORR should count. The Sheffield tram company has a station operators licence for Parkgate and I would expect Magna to be added when it opens. None of the stops on the 'traditional' network need a licence.

There have now been over 1,000 postings been made on this quiz with seemingly no problems that have covered the proposed openings of normal heavy rail railway stations, with a master first posting that has references attached.

If suddenly a need is felt to discuss proposed openings of new tram stations, heritage stations, etc, the answer to that is for those interested in such matters to open a thread on the relevant forum section of this website.

Clearly 'three letter codes' won't work as a definition then.

There are examples throughout the network of shared facilities but my knowledge is not sufficient to fully understand the legal basis of their operations.
Tyne & Wear Metro to Sunderland is Network Rail as there are National Rail services overlaid with Nexus Metro services and a Network Rail/Nexus boundary is shown (in Baker Rail Atlas) for the line beyond Pelaw to South Shields.
Similarly Chiltern / London Underground out to Amersham where a NR/TfL boundary is shown.
Rotherham Central is shown as having separate platforms.

The issue would be how to regard the Cardiff Valleys if the assets have been transferred from Network Rail to Transport for Wales.

The definition I would suggest using is the Office of Rail and Road station usage list.

Rotherham Parkgate, Magna, the Tyne and Wear Metro stations and Northern Line extension stations are not included. Elizabeth Line stations are included.

I don’t know if the shift of responsibility regarding Welsh Valley stations will have an impact on their membership in the ORR list

But on the flip side, several London Underground owned (not operated) stations are also shown in the NR statistics (eg Harrow to Amersham inclusive).

This feels like needless nitpicking for what is a few seconds adding something to a list. The Tram-Train stations are NR infrastructure on NR tracks, as is the Sunderland extension of the Metro. Nobody is asking for the West Midlands Metro to be added, which is entirely a closed, private tramway.

It really annoys me that since this thread was opened in 2018, kept going by the diligence of one website member who has devoted much of his spare time to it, that seven years later, certain people who have not been dissatisfied with the existing format, which now includes the Baker atlas references as part of the master information database, now want changes made. They should be grateful that the existing format has been in operation for so long.

If someone wishes to provide a definitive list of those....
Along with a watertight definition.

The problem with any list is that people have different requirements from it and definitions of what should or should not be included.

There is rather more than a few seconds involved in adding a new entry. It has to be researched to see just how firm that proposal actually is (obviously Magna is a very firm proposal). I have a full set of Baker Rail Atlases, there are many proposals which never happened such as the Avon Metro and the Ivanhoe Line. Once included at #1 each proposal has to be reviewed on a regular basis. Negative news such as delays, postponements or cancellations rarely gets reported, hence the continued inclusion of Surrey Canal (was Surrey Canal Road or New Bermondsey) in #1.

One 'simple' expansion of the definition then leads to others. Addition of tram-train stops on Network Rail lines, then other stops served by those same tram-trains but not on Network Rail infrastructure, then routes physically linked to those previous routes but served only by trams, then networks independent of Network Rail such as Metrolink. Then there are the 'very light rail' proposals. All have 'stations' of some kind, all serve the function of transporting passengers.

My long list currently stands at 670 proposals, many of which I can completely ignore because they will simply never happen. I can live without expanding that list to include the many light railway proposals.

Quite so. You and @Baxenden Bank have put a lot into this - more than I would have.

Let’s leave it as heavy rail stations. Perhaps someone (else!)would like to start a light rail/tram:tram-train/DLR one?

While we are touching on what's included, is there a list of completed and opened "new" or "reopened" heavy rail stations anywhere, preferably with (re)opening dates?
