The Class 73 engine was there for specific purposes where lines were not electrified. The Azuma donkey engine is there purely because the infrastructure is so unreliable.

Not quite 'purely'. 801s are move on, off and around depots using GU power fairly frequently.

If the OHE was so unreliable to be a common problem you'd have thought they would have fitted a GUE to the Mk4 DVT like Chiltern did with their Mk3 DVT's although that was so they could shut down the main engine to save fuel rather than pure emergency use.
I have read about some instances though, where they had to open all of the doors because conditions onboard had deteriorated that much!

At some point later than 2028, due to one of their suppliers' factories flooding.
If this remains the case - it means the 180s will go first, to be replaced by stock that was ordered years after the CAF order was placed!

a power outage is impacting not just the OHLE but signalling as well, so no signals are lit - in such a situation isn't the driver supposed to assume the signal is at danger?
The OHLE is normally powered separately to the signalling. It is very unusual for both to fail.
the OHLE has come down and is blocking the line and/or is tangled around a train, preventing that train (and following trains) from moving beyond the next signal
But the train with the diesel can make a wrong direction move if the opposite line is safe, whereas a pure electric would be stuck.

Be interesting to work out the total mileage that they have done when they are finally withdrawn!

Why do you think the 180s have to go ? They all had ETCS kit installed at Eastleigh a couple or more years ago, so they will be compliant with southern ECML when that is switched on.

Not necessarily saying 180s are reliable of course !!!

Because Grand Central have ordered Hitachi units that are arriving in early 2028 and nobody else operates 180s currently.

I recently had a go on a 180 and they were quite good IMO, nice and smooth, good seats and the sound of the turbo whistling at full chat was awesome!
My only complaint was that the aircon seemed to be set at -5'c!

They are fine when they work, but the problem is that they are chronically unreliable!

PRAYING that they get retired this year . . Awful trains
The IC225/91s or the 180s? Either way there’s nothing to replace them this year so there’ll be a lot of angry passengers stuck on platforms without a train to catch if you get your wish.

91124 as of 21:10 today is 6,860,644.
That looks low to me as it would be only around 200k per year since new. I’d suggest that might be more like the figure since HGR and renumbering as a 91/1.

Indeed - 91131 is reported to have achieved around 8 million miles before being laid up at the end of 2021 (https://www.railmagazine.com/news/n...s-record-breaking-91-saved-for-bo-ness-museum), while others were reported to have covered "over seven million miles" at around the same time, though I don't have access to any figures more specific than that.

That was my point :) early withdrawal is silly if it means no stock to replace. Unless of course they want off lease 321s covering. That might be fun.
I’ve done King’s Cross to Leeds in one (or at least I think it was a 321, perhaps somebody can confirm WYMetro branded EMU in the late 90s?) and fun it wasn’t!

I've heard of that happening. Yes, it will have been a WYPTE 321, they lived on the Leeds - Doncaster services.

Yes, definitely one of the EMUs used on the Leeds to Doncaster so that would have been it.

It was pretty bouncy at full speed on the ECML and I wouldn’t recommend 3 +2 seating for a 200+ mile journey, not pleasant at all. The windows made a heck of a clattering sound all the way too.

It was when the 91s were withdrawn for checks after Hatfield I think.
