The normal pattern of station names where there were (or indeed are) more than one station in a town/city has been to put the town name first followed by a more specific descriptor, such as Andover Junction or Bristol Temple Meads. Frequently cardinal compass directions are used, like Blackpool North. Croydon is unusual in having its cardinal points prefixing the town name (East Croydon and West Croydon). No doubt there are a few others which follow this reversed pattern. But less well known, in the 1860s the LBSC tried to attract more business in Croydon by opening a short branch line to a third station, named Central Croydon. As it so happens this venture was pretty unsuccessful and it was closed for the second time in 1890 (after which the site came in handy for the spectacular Town Hall). There were/are plenty of Central stations where the town/city name comes first, such as Cardiff, Glasgow, Leicester, Manchester, etc, but is anyone aware of any other location apart from Croydon where "Central" prefixed the name of the town?
