I support ID cards, as part of a wider internal security architecture to bring in a low-crime society. However implementation of ID cards needs to be alongside the universal fitment of facial recognition cameras to realise it's benefits.
While there are civil liberties considerations, the government can easily take authoritarian measures now with existing powers and systems, and introducing ID does not substantially increase the risk of them taking those actions.
