A career as a signaller

Hi, newbie here

I‘m a later-in-life career changer and interested in becoming a signaller. Looking for some help to a couple of questions that I’ve not been able to find the answers to.

Other than the salary bands on NR website, it doesn’t give any info on what the bands mean apart from saying more responsibility.
  • As someone off the street, how do I know which band to apply for?
  • If I applied for a G9 and failed, would they offer a lower grade? And vice versa;
  • if I applied for a G2 could they offer a higher grade instead?
  • Do I just look for the location of the role rather than the grade?

There is currently an operations apprenticeship advertised, which includes IST. It's for 18 months, and I would get the same money as a G2 signaller for that time.
  1. Would it be easier to get a signalling job through the apprenticeship route as I would have a ‘foot in the door’? or
  2. would it be better/quicker to hold out for a specific signalling vacancy? I’m in Sussex and don’t know how often signalling roles come up. (I assume that existing employees get first dibs/priority via internal vacancies?)
  3. How quickly can you move through the signalling grades? I wouldn’t be able to afford to stay at a G2 rate for long
Thanks all in advance
The band/grade is subject to the highest rank of the panel or link in the muti panel box, or grade of the signal box if single man
If you applied for grade 9 and failed then you failed for the lot same for grade 1-8 you only have one application
if you get a permeant role you can not go for a new role until at least 12 months
as mention location has no bearing on grade there is the maximum commute distance of 60mins if it is a 12 hour shift so if you live more than 60 mins from a grade 9 it is highly unlikely you would be successful if they work 12 hour shifts

the apprenticeship route is not just 3 months in IST it is more training under mentorship at your box and being exposed to other parts of network rail operations like control, stations control room and management, Mobile operations manger, planning. Whilst signaler is just that. If you fail the IST you more than likely be dismissed, if you fail the passing out of panels you may get 3 months to be redeployed you will have to find that new role yourself.

Signaling roles are very depended on budgets and headcount normally its 3 months notice to be given for leaving signaling but takes up to 18 months to get a person through training.
unless your a crossing keeper grade 2 is your training wage until you pass out I believe your first panel or your LOM vocal rule test. Internal vacancies are more than external but as more lower grade signal boxes closes and get put into roc or iecc you may end up moving to a different part of the floor

Hi All

I have now completed all the online tests and video interview. Have now been put in candidate talent pool as distance to position i applied for in London was over the 50 minute travel time.

Any one else been in this situation?
Yeah I was in this position, passed all the online assessments and interview but unfortunately lived over 50 minutes away so was placed in the candidate talent pool, a few months later a position closer to home came up and I was invited to a face to face interview! I got the job and start on the 29th September

Hi another IST question so I can be fully prepped, roughly how many hours would you spend after class each night revising etc and how much time at the weekend ? (So I can sort my life out before it starts ! )

This is entirely subjective, really.

Personally, I didn't do anything on the weekends. Most evenings I did the "homework" sheets we were given and looked over my notes, added things to my Quizlet for an hour or so. Before big tests or assessments I spent a bit longer, I found group study benefitted me and I liked to bounce questions around, I was fortunate that we had a few in our class who felt the same.

We were encouraged to make sure you didn't overdo it at the risk of burnout, but only you will know where your learning is at and how much effort you need to put in.

Depends on SIM groups but I would tend do a few hours most nights. I was generally in early and would do an hour before the class, I also had my OH testing me all weekend with my flashcards. Every car journey. Over a brew. They will tell you to take the weekend easy but I know me and the need to continue to hammer things home.

However… do as little or as much as works for you. But set yourself to be ready to do a lot if you need it.

Do you know if this is including Leicester?
Leicester is now controlled from the East Midlands Control Centre at Derby. I’m not sure what grade the panel is but maybe a grade 7? There are MOM jobs based in Leicester but they are dead man’s shoes really and I’ve only known them filled internally (albeit I’ve only been with the company 5 years)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been given a start date of 29th Sep and don’t go onto IST until the 20th Oct. I haven’t heard anything from network rail since my official start date confirmation. Does anyone have insight when they will be in touch and what I will be doing before starting? Thanks

Could be a variety of things, but expect to be at home doing nothing for a bit too.

E-learning
Visiting boxes
Time out with a MOM

With some LOMs you’ll need to be more proactive than others. I actively chased mine for things to do, As a result I saw 5/6 boxes before ever going to IST. -you’ll probably need to organise yourself though, and definitely call ahead to check it’s ok to drop in for a bit.

Hi Everyone,

Hopefully someone can help me
I have searched but couldn't find any recent posts.
I am waiting a date for an assessment centre for a crossing keeper role.
Can anyone provide any information what may happen at the assesment centre.
I appreciate any help.

Thanks for all the feedback on IST note taking! a few have mentioned laptops could be useful, i can see the benefits exporting things to quizlet etc, are they provided or would i need to take my own? Do they use any software like Via that replicates the big class screen direct to laptops? Is there anything i can do in advance to prepare, looking back through the forum phonetic alphabet is mentioned and bell codes but ive no idea how id learn bell codes or is their anything else i could get a head start on? as im coming from the “streets” and want to do as well as possible. Thanks
The slides themselves aren't available to trainees to take away , but in my experience they mostly just say what the rulebook does anyway .

However if you did have a specific learning need which would need to be evidenced then there might be handouts or other learning aids provided and/or extra time in the exams .

As others have said this will depend entirely on yourself.

What I would say though is don't fall into the habit early on of thinking the exam isn't for 5 weeks so I dont need to start worrying until closer , get into a good habit of doing a bit every afternoon/evening after class . The exams and simulator assessments come thick and fast . Also make sure that you understand some of the fundamental principles from the early week because they really are the foundations to a lot of the rules for out of course working that you will look at later on in the course.

Find what works for you , in our group we had some of us who liked to revise together , quizzing each other or explaining/discussing various rules .Others just sat in their hotel rooms reading their notes/rule books . In my case there was someone in my group I got on really well with that struggled on the sim when I didnt , I actually found helping him running extra sim sessions at every opportunity also helped me strengthen my understanding.

I tried to keep one day at the weekend entirely free and go out and do something , especially if you are away from home . But towards the end with the final exam I did spend a fair bit of the two weekends before it getting revision in . The way I looked at it was the sacrafice was worth it for 10 weeks when all the rewards of the job are taken into account.

There is a two week introducition to signalling E learning which you will have to complete before IST , this actually includes stuff that you will be tested on in week 1 as well .

There will also be stuff that your LOM will probably need to do with you like go through some policies/procedures , issue rule books .

If you can I would also reccomend trying to get a lot of the generic E learning done like the fire safety/data protection etc . My understanding is this needs to be done anyway before you can pass out at your first location , and I wouldn't personally have wanted to be doing it whilst learning my first box or at signalling school.

Hopefully your LOM will also offer you the opportunity to visit some boxes , but if not I would ask because that can also be a good way to start to meet people in the area that you will be working.

I think it’s the same psychometric tests as the signaller. Have you done them yet?

Thank you for the reply. I've completed all the online tests, received the email today. I had to complete a quick form confirming where I live. Now waiting for a date for the assessment centre.

I think it’s straight to interview where it’s all about the non technical skills and a couple of diversity and inclusion ones too. I don’t think you do the role play one for the crossings. I didn’t anyway when I went for the job

it’s Network Rail so nobody ever knows. For me recruitment is understaffed so it can take a while. You never know what vacancies they have.

Thank you so much! Also what’s the official portal for e-learning or employee sign in? I assume it’s not the anbertrack one? Also I assume I will be given this info when my LOM gets in touch but with only just over two weeks it’s feeling close when I know very little! Is this normal for starting etc?

All the e learning will be accessed using your employee sign in , which your Lom should request to be ready for your first day.

I got a phone call from my LOM in the week before I started giving me instructions for my first day.

I would be ready to feel a little lost with it all until you start IST.

Personally, I would think you are better off applying for a direct role. Much quicker progression to the relevant grade given that you already have a specific box to go to. Having said that, unless you are happy with the ROC, vacancies at individual SB's don't come up that frequently..

There seem to be a fair few apprentices (Operations and Signalling) in Sussex that are then competing to apply for a particular role - and remain stuck on Grade 2 until successful. I suspect there has been some over recruitment in this respect.

I moved into signalling after retiring from a 30 year career elsewhere. There is no way I would have been able to take the salary drop to a grade 2 for 18 months to make this viable. At the time the rules meant I was only penalised one grade until I actually passed out which was far more doable.
Thank you :D

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question in regards to the Bridgend G2 signaller job does anyone know the postcode of the box? Just want to make sure I live within the 50min. Just need to know what part of Bridgend just to make sure. Also is it going to be a problem if I’m a couple minutes over?

Many thanks,

It's Tondu box, it's the only box in the CF32 area.

Cheers for that! That’s fine then. Any idea what the shift pattern is for there?
Good luck - just had the "no thanks" after my online tests - which I passed last time 6months ago and go to interview, so no idea what I've done differently this time!!

Ah sorry to hear that mate! It’s frustrating I was in the same boat last year had to wait 6 months to apply again. But applied recently for the Cardiff one and passed the tests but didn’t get interview so moved my application over. Didn’t feel like I done anything different!! I thought I struggled tbh especially with the dots one. Hopefully better luck this time.
