A revenue collection system that habitualises the need for passengers to make refund claims represents awful customer service. The industry needs to do better!
I don't really get the negativity here. The industry is "doing better". It has moved on from the days when everyone had to pay cash and it took about ten minutes to load the bus at even a moderately busy stop. In my local area most passengers pay contactless and it takes a few seconds for the machine to read the card...so generally faster than cash, but still not as fast as Tap On Tap Off. I've used TOTO on the Metrolink trams and it's quick, as it presumably will be on the bus. Yes there may be teething troubles (and you might have to refund the odd ticket), but they will get sorted out. At least give it a chance!

No it’s just a reader that is wired to the ticket machine. The back office works out if the tap is an on tap or an off tap.

If a card is only tapped on the ‘off reader’ it will treat that as a tap on.
No - that's not the case, on the Ticketer system at least. The Tap Off Readers are programmed to only accept a tap off.

If you touch one with a card that's not already tapped on prior, they will just beep and reject the touch.

Interesting- it wasn’t that long ago that I tapped out with the wrong card on Apple Pay and it tapped me in. Maybe they have changed

Not sure how the systems work but I've definetly had it where I've put my phone too close to the machine before the drivers pressed on their screen and it's taken money instantly. No idea if this is the same thing but it is a bit of a gamble whether it does it or not sometimes.

Transdev is saying that automatic announcements have been installed and should be working on the Easingwold services:

I have seen the equipment installed on the ex-Reliance ADL200MMCs and Evoras. Unsure whether the Eclipses and Deckers have them though.
Was on Evora 1901 today which has the equipment installed for automatic announcements yet there said announcements weren't working.

There are other systems out there but there is no perfect system. Some people argue that conductors were best as boarding times were quick and fare payment accurate but on busy buses there is a chance of fare dodging.
In Europe there are some areas that do Bluetooth or GPS based ticketing - you open the app and let it track you then it works out what modes of travel you have used and charged accordingly.

Theres some gremlins in the system with a report of one of the Harrogate Volvo Electrics on 2 having its internal display thinking its route is that of an X98 while a Merc on the 24 has been pictured on facebook with the display thinking its the route of the 21 - in both cases the correct route number is shown but the next stops are completely the wrong route.
Skipton Road in Harrogate is being closed for a number of weeks of the building of a roundabout for the new Tesco meaning after today the 4 and 59 will both divert throiugh the Jennyfield Estate. As the full closure is only the affected section the Norwich Drive stop remains in use by the 3 - it is only used outbound by 4 and 59 as their is no corresponding inbound stop.
As for the diversion judging by the comment on the web site (below) that is not following the 3 route and as such outbound there are only two stops - Hydro and jennyfield Co-Op unless they are going to stop opposite the other inbound stops on Jennyfield Drive and Crowberry Drive. Potentially means inbound 4s might actualy have more custom that you can fit in a taxi.

Diversion on the 4, 59, 727H, S1 & S318th August - 10th October 2025

Due to road works between the New Park Roundabout & Crowberry Roundabout A59 we will need to divert in both directions and miss the following stops :

Electric Ave

Norwich Drive

If you use these stops then our buses will serve all stops on Jennyfield Drive & Crowberry Drive.

This is in place from 18th August until 10th October.

My employer has been running Tap-On, Tap-Off for years and we have very few issues, most of the refunds come from passengers putting their payment method on the machine before asking the driver for a ticket (no different to the Manchester Tap On system) rather than a tap off system error. The Tap Off aspect isn't inherently an issue, if you pay for the tap off readers you reduce the risks but you can avoid that but it needs better briefing and discipline from your drivers. This isn't particularly innovative anymore, there are dozens of systems running, including multi-operator systems that cap across companies, so most of the issues have been identified and solutions are known.

Another year of the Transdevs 7 diverting into Leeds Festival but there being zero information anywhere that this exists. I believe a few people used the service to the festival but numbers could have been better used.

Just seems daft for Transdev not to promote the service at all. Even if just for links not fully covered by the shuttle buses (Ie Wetherby and Harrogate).

Presumably it’s aimed at locals in the near by area or staff who will ‘know’

I doubt they’d want 100s of people turning up with camping equipment at Harrogate Bus Station for an hourly single deck service. If they publicised it, it could viral as a ‘money saving hack’ to avoid the special fares on the official shuttle buses

Seems an odd thing that people would 'just know'.

Perhaps for the camping but could be worth it for day trippers? Specifically state no bags or cases allowed, run a decker on the last bus back and promote that so people know what time to be at the stop to get home.

And little information for regular users that services towards Harrogate from Wetherby will be heavily delayed. It grates when you get on at Wetherby and it announces 'The 7 fast to Harrogate' but no button to press to apologise for being 27 minutes late from Wetherby.

Is it delayed because of all the people leaving the festival which finished this morning and all the road closures, including the A64 and one-way systems as a result. It is the same every year. You have to feel sorry for the residents of Bramham that don't have a weekend away when it's on. Many do. The A58 and the ELOR were clogged on Friday with people arriving. Or is it just the usual unreliability?

There is clearly a contract with a 3rd party for the shuttles to the festival and at £18 return from Leeds and £10 from Wetherby, you can see why. Most people arriving on public transport will be coming from Leeds. Very few people will be coming from Harrogate. Leeds and Reading festivals are linked, and people do both. There is a dedicated coach that is promoted.

Most people are going to use the promoted shuttles, because they are regular, direct and much faster than the 7. Given the cost of festival tickets, drinks, food etc. etc. at the festival, saving £13 on the bus fare probably isn't a priority on a bus that runs once an hour and not from the railway station. The shuttles were double deckers with much more space for festival goers equipment. Best just to leave the 7 for local people.

The 1106 from Wetherby? Left Leeds on time, took 18 minutes between the middle and last stop on Skeltons Lane and lost another seven between Thorner and Bramham Park.
Actually 1306 from Wetherby. 1106 would not have been as bad as there is an X70 at 1125 but not at 1325

Regarding Leeds Festival it wasn't just 7s that were losing time due to the festival, most Coastliner services at some point were running upto about 30mins late in some cases due to the various diversions and the fact that it was also Ebor Festival Race Meeting at York Racecourse.

I was in York on Saturday afternoon and the York-Leeds turnbacks on Coastliner were running about 30mins late causing additional loadings on the normal Coastliner services.

There was also a Rugby Match going on at the Community Stadium in Monks Cross, with shuttle buses running from the Station and Stonebow, which only added to congestion in the City Centre for Coastliner.

Harrogate is the problem. There are roadworks everywhere. Temporary lights at the top of the hill from Pannal as you come in on Leeds Road. Then at St. Georges roundabout, the outbound lanes are closed. There are temporary lights and a "wrong way" round the roundabout route. There are also temporary lights on Hookstone Road, between Leeds Road and Wetherby Road.

The 36 is diverting away from Leeds Road, along Oatlands Drive, Hookstone Road and back to Leeds Road at Oatlands Corner.

People are using Wetherby Road instead of Leeds Road, so it isn't surprising that the 7 and the X70 are delayed by the additional traffic.

Leeds Festival is over, the road closures, one way systems are gone, so that will improve things after Wetherby for the 7.

The 36 diversion is finished now but obviously still affected by roadworks. Plenty of other works and more scheduled so jammy dodgers clog up everywhere else.

While yes there is stuff going on for dedicated shuttles, the fact that the 7 diverts into the festival car parks though clearly shows a desire to serve the site, otherwise nothing at all stops them staying on the main road and not using the car park!

Leeds and Reading are linked but I can assure you that almost no one is doing both given they are both on at the same time and acts play at both festivals. You'd have to have a lot more money than sense, plus very good train connections if you were to do both festivals!

Some roadworks have appeared on the A65 in the west of Ilkley, presumably caused by the house building on the old railway line. This is causing severe delays on the 62 and 64, with delays of up to 30 minutes, exasperated by the tailback created by the other roadworks near Booths and the time it can take to pass the zebra crossing on Brook Street.

I’m not sure how long these roadworks will be in place for, but if they’re going to be around for a while then timetables will have to be adjusted.

Does anyone know what's up with 1773 in York? Since April, there have now been 2 periods when it hasn't tracked for several Weeks, it seems like since Transdev received it in January, its spent more time off the road than on it. Is It being quite unreliable or is there another reason?

The X98/99 Transdev era came to a close with the last bus from Leeds to Wetherby - 2428. 3 people on board at Wetherby. Just left Deighton Bar to go back to Starbeck via Kirk Deighton.

Unless plans have changed Gemini 2428 is presumably today heading west on the A59 as it was stated to be moving to Burnley once the X98/X99 duties ended.
B7RLE 1860 was on loan to Starbeck from Flyer and is meant to going back to Idle for school duties.
The other two B7RLEs 1837 and 1838 that were used in the final weeks are both part of the 2007 batch. The rest have been withdrawn so presumably the same fate awaits those two.
