Can't imagine this unit will be run on the mainline much until it's clearance issues have been resolved.
Perhaps a few nighttime runs on the South Ealing test track & the obvious non passenger hours trip back to Ruislip.

I would hope the 2nd unit (now at Ruislip) has had the mods & therefore is the one to be used for testing.

Perhaps Engineering hours will be cancelled one night to do a swop (this needs advance booking in the access publications)

Are there any OO gauge in the planning? Apparently the station managed at Hatton Cross wants one in time for the first service to Heathrow.

That’s sounds interesting! Although possibly they’d be better with a full size mockup to display, showing the cab and the passenger area.

I can see them running it in the sections which have no issues while they wait for the other sections to be fixed as otherwise by not running it your basically are putting it in store and trains don't like being in store.

I'm a little unclear based on previous posts from a few pages back:

Does running to Rayners Lane/Uxbridge depend on that area being re-signalled as part of the Met upgrade? Meaning that we will have 24ts for Heathrow and 73ts for Uxbridge services initially?

Not upon resignalling for 4LM, but signal immunisation for 2024 Stock to run. They generate a different frequency than legacy Stock.
Initial trial (empty) running is Northfields-Hammersmith for this reason. 38001-48001 did this early this morning.

There are various signalling compatibility changes required for the 24 stock full testing and to run in passenger service:
Some of these are not essential for nighttime test runs where suitable arrangements can be made (eg the trip from Ruislip to Ealing Common/Northfields)
From travelling round the system you can see progress with these works.
The relationship with 4LM particularly relates to signal sighting (visibility from train cab) where 24 stock has a much more "tunnel vision" view.
Many stations upto & including South Harrow seem to have had this work done (with Coacting signals provided)
From Rayners Lane - Uxbridge, 4LM are providing new signals (with an additional aspect to cater for trains using both CBTC & colour light signalling)
These signals have generally been installed and appear to be as necessary for the 24 stock - but not commissioned/usable yet.
So passenger service of 24 stock to Rayners Lane (and beyond to Uxbridge) either requires 4LM to be commissioned or additional interim work is required to provide suitable signal visibility

It will be very interesting to note that the "older" S Stock will be under CBTC but the almost brand new 24ts will be manually driven on the same section of line!

Going back to the 4LM query - Will LU need to get rid of the 73ts before switching over to CBTC on the Uxbridge branch? If this is the case, how will this be managed if the 24ts cannot run under legacy signalling but the 73s have to go before the switchover? My guess is that there is interim work needed to allow dual running of old and new stock

Both Piccadilly Stock will be able to run to Uxbridge, in legacy and CBTC overlay.

It's unrelated to this reason, but I believe the initial plan is (or was last I heard) to enter them into service on the Northfields to Arnos Grove non-core services first when they're introduced, as this will enable train operators who have gone through the necessary stock training to run the one service pattern. This makes it much easier when reforming the service (swapping train numbers and drivers during late running for example) as it'll be much less likely to end in a scenario where a reform can't take place as one of the operators isn't trained on the new stock. It'll also make enabling training a lot easier.

This may change by the time it comes to actually introduce them though, or may have changed already.

They do, but scans only work in straight lines (a curve is broken down into a series of sometimes extremely short straight lines) and dynamic behaviour isn't always exactly as predicted.

In that case somebody is not specifying the scan correctly. LIDAR scan frequency / capture speed needs to be adjusted to give the number of returns needed to meet the quality requirements.

We use it extensively in my field (aviation).

Any references to reformations are, initially, a red herring. Either way - that’s simply not how service management works during disruption.

They will absolutely begin on captive workings, almost certainly with a dedicated running number. They won’t get reformed - they’ll be the first to get cancelled, as happened with S stock roll out.

Beyond that it’s safe to say the plan is fluid. For my sins I am becoming a lot closer to the roll out than I expected, so I will be cautious with what else I say publicly for now.

This is pretty much what I meant in my initial reply. During service recovery on the Picc, The Northfields non-cores are usually the first to be cancelled anyway if the stock can be used for something more useful like a branch train. Quite often a Northfields reverser is used to bring in a Heathrow service at Acton Town or Northfields W/B if there's an ONA or NO OKs. It's a process I've done many times myself and it can often help you out of a tight spot.

I more meant that having them on dedicated, isolated workings such as the Northfields reversers with specific train numbers during the training period for T/Ops would mean they wouldn't interfere with normal service recovery should it be required.

38001-48001 successfully completed an empty test run Northfields depot-Hyde Park Corner and return this morning.

Does anyone know if the delay to introduction also affects the production timeline, or will it mean that there are plenty of spare new units to introduce once the first one has come in (and drivers have been trained up)

Isn’t full scale production going to be delayed at least until the testing is completed, TFL gives detailed feedback to Siemens and it then introduces potential improvements to the train design?

Testing of the 2024 Stock is alleged to take place either today or tomorrow during the Piccadilly’s engineering possession between King’s Cross and Osterley/Uxbridge.

Yes, 001 is out, currently at Earl's Court, eastbound.

Stopping a production line is enormously expensive and disruptive. They'll keep it running and then carry out remedial works as needed. Much cheaper.
