Apologies. I was speaking to the guard on 5 and she said 5 and 6 were working. During the time I was on Central I only noted 5. As you say RTT gives nothing for 6 presently. Sorry.

TfW keen to publicise the 756 introduction. Drones and photos!

Glad they made in the inside look reassuring familiar!

I took this video of 756005 at Coryton this lunchtime arriving and departing. Pulled in very gingerly. Shows the pantagraph up and the level boarding working well.

Last one to work yet, 756003 now showing as working 5T64 on RTT tonight to Treherbert Sidings, maybe meaning it will finally work something in the morning ??

That would probably be because of the 5 mph speed restriction.

When I was on it today it didn't feel as if it was being driven cautiously when stopping at the other stations.

Looks like there's 5 756s booked to stable in Treherbert tonight for 5 starts in the morning so does seem highly likely to enter service in the morning.

Not surprised, you don't have a lot of room left until you hit the buffers, not helped by people video'ing you as you arrive :D

On a side note the track bed and the vegetation, bring back those banned herbicides! Couple of Kgs of Potassium Chlorate would kill those for years. The stuff now is totally useless, I use sodium hydroxide, which acts the same way as KClO₃ but it's still allowed, readily available and dirt cheap!

Here is it in Platform 3? at Caerphilly, I presume the 25kV charging rail was not energised as the pantograph didn't go up. Would they even bother if its a quick turn a round?

The current 5 mph speed restriction in Coryton station does not, I think, give the driver much freedom to choose how they approach the buffers.

It's been there since the wires were officially (but not in fact actually) energised.

Considering the length of the new 3 carriage 756 it amazes me that its total seating capacity (normal plus tip up seats) is 142.
The old 2 carriage class 150's has 144 seats in total, 2 seats more!

Regardless, I can never see them being anywhere near full on this line.

Not while it's stuck at 2 trains per hour, anyway.

A more frequent service might do better at getting people out of their cars, or indeed tempt them from the number 27 bus.

But I think it would need to be more frequent not just on paper but actually run reliably to the timetable.

The length of passenger accommodation in a 756 is of course reduced by the power module and equipment behind the cabs, as opposed to a 150 where almost all the full length is available for seating.
Being low floor comes at a price - one in my view that's well worth paying.
(Then again the 398's seem to manage without so much length taken up by equipment - they have smaller batteries (I think) and no diesel generator, but even so...)

It's the trade-off for having level boarding and so no power equipment underneath the train, which is worth it. We're obviously yet to see the 398s in passenger service, but as someone's who has only ever known 150s / 153s and Pacers on the Cardiff local routes and Valley Lines, the FLIRTs are by far the best trains we've ever seen on these routes. They are a complete step change on anything that's been before and are undoubtedly TfW's best trains currently.
(I know you weren't criticising the Flirts, just giving my opinion of them)

If TfW are serious about "Network North Wales" and running Cardiff to Bristol services, they should without a doubt order more 231s or 756s for these future routes.

I agree.
Even if you go back before 150s and Pacers I doubt you'd fine anything as pleasant to travel on as the FLIRTs.

(Though the forward views in 1st generation DMUs must have been nice, and the steam railmotors the line started out with - a precurser to the single 153s! - were perhaps more interesting from an enthusiast point of view).

Were the TfW 150s in a 2+3 seating arrangement?

If so, while the number of seats may be lower, the number of seats people will actually use is likely higher!

Generally 2+2, though I seem to remember they borrowed some from Northern which were 2+3

Not only utterly lovely to travel in, the Flirts have the advantage that as new technology is developed, the power module carriage can be upgraded to bionic duckweed, mini nuclear reactor propulsion or huge solid state batteries in future....

Once power units reach the capacity of 1.21GW and a few minor tweaks to their top speed they might even travel back and start the driver training sooner ;)

I would not be surprised if the three-car FLIRTS get reallocated in the next few years - once Cardiff Crossrail phase 1 opens, one of the consultants' reports was recommending that the Coryton/Penarth/Caerphilly service gets replaced with tram-trains so that the local services can access the Bay. The 3-car 756s then become an obvious candidate for serving the Burns Stations on the main line, as with batteries and diesel they'll be fine to continue to Bristol. But let's not get too speculative!

Yes, the 398's without toilets would suit the Coryton/Penarth/Caerphilly line down to a tee.
