I would say that 950001 is equally as niche as 313121, which I hope is being maintained as a ’digital signalling’ showpiece.
To give another example, the Great Central Railway already has a collection of ex-British Rail test cars.

Could the 950 be useful to a heritage railway for carrying kit and stuff to worksites? Not sure what the interior is like but could this be a more efficient way of moving things around than haulage with a loco?
Trust me, I think the expectation of the interior (especially when BR used to call them "laboratories") makes the test fleet sound a little more glamorous than it is. Most of the 950 is essentially a workshop, small parts an office and another small mess area. Its not half as exciting as you might expect!
I'd say saving a conventional 150 is far more interesting - as is often the way, things like the 950 get saved and all the squadron service units get scrapped, resulting in a rather unique unit with limited appeal being saved over the day to day runners.

Depends if it's deemed of interest to schools ect or meets that they wish to showcase infrastructure and its maintenance in their "forward plan"

Has anyone on here actually stopped and thought about this momentous news and then questioned why the individual imparting that "knowledge" would have the slightest involvement in what NR were planning to do with the train?

Yes. People are often told what’s happening with the stock they work on and some of those individuals choose to share it, whether they’re supposed to or not is another matter but it happens.
What isn’t certain is how accurate that info is, as it’ll no doubt have gone through several people before reaching that driver so it’ll be like Chinese whispers, what was initially said by those involved won’t necessarily be what that driver was told.

I’d suggest you have a think about why drivers would be involved in deciding how vehicles are disposed of, when it has nothing to do with their role.

It always has been!
But the control/management share an office with their NR opposite numbers. Its a pretty close nit team, so everyone involved tends to have a good idea what's going on...

No as above (#115), although it has ran as 2Z08 and 2X08 when required, this is a schedule for one of NRs Video Inspection Units units (Former Class 153s). There as yet doesn't seem to be the same discipline in allocating a headcode per unit, but heyho.
