What reasons have forum members come up with to get out of something?
Illness is always good, a bad stomach is a good "ailment" to use as its not long-term and most people won't want to ask any more.

I've used family birthdays to get out of other dos a couple of times, i just didn't say i wasn't attending the birthday either...

Just say that you have already committed to another event. If they ask what it is you can dodge the question, tell them to mind their own business or say it’s somebody they don’t know: it is probably best not to say too much as elaborate explanations can unravel. Then, if need be, if the family start asking questions after the gathering you can just say that your event was cancelled, but as it was at the last minute you didn’t want to inconvenience the family by turning up without warning.

I should add that wifey won't tell a fib (so she says), so any excuse must have at least a small element of truth.
Tell them the night before that you've just tested positive for Covid....and the wife doesn't want to come in case she's picked it up too. ;)

Covid is useful nowadays, and you can always find a photo of a positive test online if you want to send them proof.

However, you don't want an illness that lasts for ages, especially if someone sees you out and about the next day. Bad stomachs don't usually last that long.

I’ve had comments like ‘don’t ring that f…..in bell at me…!!’

Also those walking with ear/headphones, where no matter how much you ring your bell they can’t hear you. So you approach them slowly, try to creep past, then get abuse because they didn’t know you were there.

Sometimes you just can’t win :'(
A smartphone or earphones shrinks the visible universe down to 18 inches. Nothing outside that distance from the body can be detected.

People who use the word space. A green space, er... it's a park,
Not necessarily, it could be any number of rural areas with open space.

Ripen at home fruit.

The food industry has all manner of technologies with strict temperature and chemical controls overseen by trained and experienced personnel.

Somehow I have to replicate this in my house armed, at best, with a banana and a plastic bag.

A variant of one I have mentioned before: Spellcheck’s inability to cope with grammar. It will change a correct word in a sentence to another one that renders the sentence ungrammatic for no apparent reason: particular bugbears are changing ‘its’ to ‘it’s’ and ‘were’ to ‘we’re’. It also likes adding suffixes, such as -ly, for no good reason. And don’t get me started on its attitude to Welsh place names.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
Any advertising that refers to a product as 'the nation's favourite'. It may even be technically true in one or two rare cases but the phrase makes my damned teeth itch.

Well let’s be honest, the Welsh could never spell properly. Beats me how you can write a whole sentence which contains no vowels.

Note: I love Wales & the Welsh :)
I gather that for "vowel-less verbiage", Welsh has nothing on the Czech and Slovak languages. There's a much-loved tongue-twister therein, totally free of vowels: strc prst skrz krk, meaning "stick a finger through the neck" -- barely makes sense, but that is not what tongue-twisters in any language are essentially about ...

The name of our country is "Great Britain". There is no such country as Team GB

I'd happily ban people that dawdle for no reason - or those that walk slowly in a row taking up the whole pavement

Or when the row (or couple) makes no attempt to "give way" to oncoming walkers preferring that they veer onto the grass verge or road itself or briefly walk sideways in order not to disturb their formation.

I won’t give way. If they are in a line walking towards me I’ll walk at the side but no way will I walk in the road or verge. I’ve had quite a few instances of face to face standoffs.

The name of our country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. We compete as Great Britain due to folk in NI having the option of competing for Ireland if they so wish.

Likewise, although I often simply walk into them.

Team GB this or Team GB that seems to be a particular thing these days. Seemingly the British Team seems too much for the modern generation to say and doesn’t appear “trendy “ enough to those that spin names.

A pretty minor one that is more a case of wondering at people’s lack of thought: expensively produced adverts that fail to give important information. This can range from opening hours to what they actually offer.

There is one on the Wightlink screens at the moments that shows a new (I think) restaurant and bar. It does give its website, but no other practical information appears. It starts with something like ‘only fifteen minutes’ walk from the pier’, but doesn’t tell you which pier or even which town. I know that some on this forum will say, ’Ah, but you can always look at their website’, but that misses out a crucial stage in the process. You see the advert, think that looks like a nice place to eat, see that it is in Sludgemouth, think that you will be in or near Sludgemouth, so look it up or wander past when you are there. If you haven’t realised that you are nearby, you are much less likely to follow it up.
