What about people doing journeys like Rotherham-Manchester, won't the extra change put them off travelling by train?

This route would give them the option of taking a longer journey with no change tiill Sheffield or a quicker one with an extra change. Plenty of people I know who aren't regular rail users still make use of Nat Rail Enquiries with their mobiles so it's fairly easy to plan such a journey.

Look at entry 58. No need to change at Stockport as the recast service will start at Manchester Piccadilly, not Manchester Airport.

First TPE already run a cross-Pennine service, starting at Manchester Piccadiily, to Hull.

As I said, it is all in the hands of those who have to plan the recast services that will be caused by the implications of the Ordsall Chord. We can just play at being route planners.

The journey is showing up on NRE, departing 9.22 this Friday - wasn't there when before I checked just after the start of this thread.

Well I'm sure that there's hundreds or even thousands of people every day at Manchester Piccadilly who are only in Manchester for the purpose of changing trains and as there's a shortage of paths in to Manchester it would make sense to move some of the passenger flows out of Manchester.

Very true. And thats from an old-timer like me!!!

By the way, I have a question to ask you that you may be able to answer for me. Was there ever a train in the 1970/1980 period that came from either Aberystwth or Shrewsbury in the evening and ended its journey about dawn in York. If so, what route did it take?

That would be the York - Shrewsbury ( and vice versa) mails. Shrewsbury - Crewe - Stockport - Denton - Stalybridge - Huddersfield - Leeds - York.

Thank you for this very quick reply.

I had a feeling that it may have used the route that this thread refers to.

Does anything similar run these days on this route on a regular basis such as dedicated freight services, etc,

Ran fine today, never realised before that the line only connects to Platform 2 at Guide Bridge, although the board was showing Platform 1. Hope no-one was waiting to get on there as it would be impossible to make it in time with no footbridge anymore.

With some love and support surely this line could have a future, as has been previously stated, having the option of taking services from the Buxton/Macclesfield/Crewe line out through East Manchester and into Tameside surely could be profitable. And certainly easier and quicker than the bus.

It's only when you look at local rail travel around Greater Manchester that you see that in all honesty rail isn't that great. For example should I wish to travel from Manchester (I live in Failsworth) to East Didsbury to go to the cinema, at best I can expect a half hour frequency on an unreliable line in terms of delays and short notice cancellations.

It should be interesting to see what future improvements are made as if you want me to use local rail then I would at least like to see connectivity, frequency and reliability as being important. Otherwise see if it can converted to Metrolink.

I have traveled on diversions 15 or more years ago through here, but can't remember how we got to Vic, as obviously when we got into Guide Bridge, we were either facing Stalybridge or New Mills / Glossop.

Failsworth no longer has a line Metrolink next year and i'm sure that another extension is going through Didsbury, the train service to East Didsbury from piccadilly is excellent tho, you have the MIA Shuttles, Crewe via MIA, and towards the night time WML via MIA and even a few TPE services stopping there...not bad methinks

Stockport station-Heaton Norris junction-Reddish South station-Denton station-Denton junction-Crowthorn junction-Ashton Moss South junction-Ashton Moss North junction- Miles Platting station-Manchester Victoria station.

This route bypasses Guide Bridge using the Denton junction to Crowthorn junction section of line and ensures a direct run, with no reversals anywhere.:D

Have You a Map?

I presume it joins the line between GB and Pic, then branches off.

Has anyone an updated version of this as it misses the most interesting bit off:

To respond to the contributor from the Failsworth area, the new Metrolink line is proceeding well and the current hope is for the Oldham to Manchester Victoria section to be opened some time in Autumn 2011. The stops that he would use would be:-
Failsworth
Newton Heath and Moston (this was the old Dean Lane station)
Central Park
Monsall
Manchester Victoria

I am informed that this line will carry on from Manchester Victoria (like the Bury service) to make connections with other lines in the city centre. There is the Manchester Piccadilly to East Didsbury rail service that he can use at present. Besides the shuttle all-stops rail service to the airport, other services from further afield stop there, but you need to look at the new rail timetables that will come into operation in May.

The Metrolink line to East Didsbury (where the multiplex cinema referred to is situated) is having the preparation line works done at present but the re-opening to East Didsbury is quite some way off at present. The works are being done in two sections:-
(1) From Trafford Bar to St. Werburgh's Road.........Planned opening Spring/Summer 2011
(2) From St. Werburgh's Road to East Didsbury.......Planned opening Summer 2013

There are also excellant bus services from central Manchester to East Didsbury : number 50 bus service along the A34 and a good number of buses that pass the University that call there.

Fine, show me a map. as the line between GB and pic, would have to be crossed.

JOINING a line is somewhat different to CROSSING a line.

Joining means making an actual meeting of two lines at a junction with pointwork, unless parallell running is done and the two routes run side by side without any physical connection.

Crossing means under-passing (as the old goods lines used to do at Crewe) or being carried over by method of a bridge. There were instancies of what was referred to as "crossing on the flat" which were a relic of Victorian railway engineering when the current H & S laws were a thing unheard of at that time. I am sure there are those on the forum will be able to give you examples of such convoluted trackwork...but I have said enough on this matter :roll:and do not propose to enter into any such future discussions on it.

I offer you my eternal thanks. Being an old-timer rather than a whizz-kid with total computer knowledge, I really needed someone to come to my aid on this matter. Which you have done to perfection.

I can only rely on my use of reasoned logic, which fortunately I still have, to put my case forward. Incidentally, I did use the route that I described a few times from Manchester Victoria to Stockport about 1600 hours in the 1970's on what was a short-lived commuter service and I pride myself on knowing the names of the junctions through which the train passed. Denton station was still in a poor condition in those days.

Yes, makes it far easier to understand than a list of junctions.

All is forgiven!!! Sounds like the reason that you did not see the bridge was that Network Rail (to use the "Startrek" terminology) had the "Cloaking Device" switched on!!!....a "cunning plan" to enable them to close and dismantle things that rail travellers cannot see.:(

AJN and nym are now contributors that I will look out for in future on the forum.:D

Gone are the days when you could stand at an open window and actually see stuff.

Do Network Rail see this route as having possibilities for future passenger transportation as a part-linking of new through routes from stations either side of the line as it stands at present

Buxton to Huddersfield, via the Stockport to Stalybridge section, springs to mind.

So buses every couple of minutes from ED into Manchester or a half hourly train?

I miss having a train at Failsworth but I think the Metrolink plans are excellent to get me into Oldham and Rochdale plus the other connections too.

Dont get me wrong i'm not complaining but this is where bus services in GM seem to beat local rail albeit a lot slower.

Buxton to Huddersfield would be a great idea. Would this offer an easy connection to the Glossop line without having to go into Manchester? I know so many people who live along the Buxton to Whaley bridge section that work in Glossop.

How about use it for a new Huddersfield to London service going through Stalybridge Stockport Buxton Matlock Derby and then onwards?

Buxton to Huddersfield would be a great idea.

It sounds good. However, which would people really prefer:

1. Service every 30 minutes from Buxton to Manchester
2. Service every 30 minutes between Buxton and Hazel Grove. Destinations alternate between Manchester and Huddersfield. Connections possibly available at Hazel Grove.
