For those applying the very best of luck. I applied in Dec 20. I did the initial application then the online tests soon afterwards. Passed those and waited. And waited. Southeastern then advertised in 2022 so I applied for that too. Did my assessment day with Southeastern and passed that. Then in early 2023 I was invited for an assessment day with Southern. Only had to do one part as I’d already done it with SE. Not long after that did my MMI and DMI with Southern. Now in the pool for Southern. I’m due to retire from my current job in 19 months so asked Southern if I could be ‘deferred’ until then before being offered a course so I can get my pension. Thankfully they have agreed. Then got an email from SE saying that as I’d done the MMI and DMI with Southern I would not have to do it again with them. A strange thing was that my DMI and MMI with Southern were almost exactly the same. Not one question about why I’d like to be a driver or tell us about Southern.
Just stick with it. It does eventually happen.

Probably! I know 2 on courses that applied in May 22! Either they’ve been fast tracked or the pool is contracting

When did you apply? Looks like we applied around the same date, I haven't heard anything as of yet.
I wonder if they're doing as first come, first serve - or highest scoring candidates first.

If I remember correctly I applied the same day the ad was uploaded. Did you apply for Barnham too? Maybe it's depot by depot?

Happy New Year everyone! I have passed the recruitment process with GTR for a trainee train driver position with Southern.
This was back in October 2023. I was told by email that I would be in a pool waiting for the next available course and they would keep me updated
with regular monthly emails.
Well....I haven't received any email yet. Anyone else waiting for a training course starting soon? Did you receive updates? I am considering resigning my job hoping to get the call this month?
Would anyone be willing to share their experience please? I am so eager to start and worried to be left in the pool for years.
Thanks.

Congratulations! I certainly wouldn't resign from your job yet.
Looking at how things are currently going, I don't think you'll be on a course until at least Q4 2024/2025. But you've done the hard bit now, so sit tight!

Thank you! Congratulations to you too.
I have applied for Selhurst and have so many questions. I wonder how much notice do will they give us as I need to take notice period in consideration, that's why I was thinking of resigning.
Maybe not a good idea as you suggest.
Things seem to be going very slow, how many people do they take on a course?
I feel we are left a bit in the dark here.

That is weird. I've honestly no idea why you haven't been invited. Could maybe be like you say but equally well it could have been by chance I feel.

I’ve been waiting for Cricklewood since early last year. Don’t resign from your job till you get a contract with a start date!

What days did they have available for booking?

I was offered the 17th and the 24th. I'm not sure if these are the dates they offer everyone though. If your application is still in progress I'd just try to sit tight and wait for a little bit longer! I'm sure you'll get invited eventually.

Cheers mate, just looking for an idea as to how much notice they're giving people.

I've heard of ~ 1 months notice before but also heard of roughly a week's notice but can't remember where I read that. I was wondering the same thing as you a few months ago and started to practice bit by bit so that I'd be ready even on a short notice, so that's my advice to you.

I also applied to Southern in December 2020 and I can't believe that's now over three years ago! After the monthly assessment centre emails, it all went very quiet until November last year when I was asked if I still wanted to be considered for the position - yes, please! And then a few days before Christmas I was invited to the assessment centre; interestingly, the two available dates were different to yours: late January or early February.

March 2024 course has been arranged and filled
So this is 4 courses in total for southern so far this year. ? Thanks for the updates Sloth. You’re better than the HR department. When do you think the next ones are planned for and how many for the rest of the year. In your opinion ?

A little correspondence would be nice.

There’s a mass retirement planned for the next few years from what colleagues are telling me!

theres 3 courses for January February and March so far but I’d imagine an April may also be proposed then it'll slow down for summer so maybe every other month thereafter as they usually do. At the moment they seem to be getting internals onto courses when it’s usually a 4 and 4 mix

Thank you so much for this update! It is good to know how many courses they do in a year. If potentially, the April course goes ahead, would you happen to know how much notice they give people?

They do try to give externals a month but sometimes try to move quicker if there’s a failed medical or a drop out. It’s usually 8 per course roughly 4external and 4internal. 6-8 courses a year currently but they’ve reduced the school instructors as they thought they’d slow down but havent

Thank you for your reply. One month notice is a very short time as most jobs nowadays require a 3 months notice. I know my employer is not flexible at all and I couldn't get away with giving one month notice. I wonder how other people manage to do it. Can't wait to resign my job and start the course.
