The paucity of services from Nottingham also affects Lincoln, as most of its connections to the rest of the Midlands rely on changes at Nottingham, and therefore often another change as well. Indeed, a friend travelling between Oxford and Lincoln found they were advised to change at Sheffield, which is a very circuitous route (especially as the line between Sheffield and Lincoln makes a wide loop to the north to cross the Trent at Gainsborough)
