Camp Hill: Further delays to south Birmingham railway line

The Camp Hill line, originally due to be completed by 2022, is now set to open at the end of 2024.

Whether those really are the reasons or it's just another case of the British disease of being incapable of completing an infrastructure project anywhere near 'on time', I'm not so sure.

Presumably it'll actually end up being some point in 2025. University station might even be done by then!

At the start of the year, based on previous official announcements, the table at #1 had 15 stations anticipated to open in 2023. This is now down to nine, two of which are 'in the bag'.

Update on the Northumberland line, at Ashington the new car park has opened which allows the worksite to move adjacent to the new platform which was being used as temporary parking, starting to look like a station now. Newsham is also starting to take shape with work continuing on the new overbridge as well as the platform sections. Work has started at Bebside with some site clearance and overnight roadworks on the A189 for the new footbridge. An article has just been posted on http://www.northumberlandline.uk/post/northumberland-park-works-update regards Northumberland Park advising residents main construction on the station will begin on 8th July running through to March 2024 including local road closures. Not a lot going on at Seaton Deleval however the basic platform structure is there and there is a site compound. Same with Bedlington, not a lot happened but there has been some site clearance and demolition, a couple of revised design options have been prepared for Bedlington as the old parcels office has been found to be in a pretty bad condition and there are proposals to demolish it and just retain the main building, full details including the new designs can be found here: http://www.northumberlandline.uk/post/bedlington-station-entrance-design-options

At todays Torbay Civic Society the chief planning officer was present and question of Edginswell was asked and his reply was that the cost had doubled. They council still want the station as it unlocks building land to the SW of the station and is part of Torbay Hospital's green strategy. The hospital is effectively being rebuilt over the next 10 years.

Funding has apparently been secured to look at reopening Chard Junction station on the Dorset-Somerset border. Remains to be seen if it actually progresses.

Cllr Connor Payne is spearheading a campaign for a new ‘Chard Parkway’ station on the site of the old station, which closed in 1966, providing hourly services to Exeter and London.

He has now secured £23,000 from locals and businesses for an outline business case to submit to the Department for Transport in the autumn.

The old Chard Central station was turned into shops after it closed and much of the trackbed onto Ilminster is now part of the Stop Line Way cycle route.

The line is currently served by South Western Railway, with trains stopping at Crewkerne and Axminster.

Cllr Payne estimates a new station would serve around 30,000 people and could create around 5,000 new jobs by attracting new companies to the area.

He said: “Why should we be putting the extra damage on our bus services when we can have an easy link to the rail network?

“We’re doing a lot at the moment with the night bus service and the reduced fares, but looking at the long term, we definitely need better access to travel and transport, and that includes rail.

“There will be significant development in Chard coming over the next 10 years, which will bring new families in, and we want to give them the opportunity to travel, live and work more accessibly.”

Cllr Payne added: “The benefits, as far as I’m concerned, far outweigh the negatives.

“Somerset Council doesn’t have the money for this, so we’ve taken it on ourselves as a community.

“We’ve set up the Chard Active Travel and Transport Group, and we’ve had consultancy agents to come forward and do the work for the outline business case. Businesses and residents who all want to see this happen have chipped in.

“We were too late in the game to apply for government funding for the business case. When we went to our MP, we didn’t have a convincing enough argument to have a good chance to bid for funding.

“This route seems a better way – we’ve got a bit more time to look into the facts. What we are looking to do is to have a convincing enough case so that when the government have the money, we can hand it to them and they can get on with it.”

The business case is expected to be completed and submitted to the DfT within three months.

Transport experts are developing proposals to build or re-open several train stations in Swansea, roll out electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses, and even create a new tram line from the city’s High Street station to the docks.

The proposed train stations on the Swansea and District Line, which mainly carries freight, would be at Pontlliw, Felindre, Morriston and Winch Wen with one also reopened at Landore.

Ben George, of Transport for Wales, told a group of Swansea councillors that this would provide rail access for a large swathe of the city’s northern suburbs and link the High Street station through to Pontarddulais in the north-west of the county.

In addition a new train station at Cockett is proposed on the Swansea to Pembrey and Burry Port line, which also serves Llanelli and Gowerton.

Mr George said the Swansea and District Line proposals were of “particular interest” in terms of the benefits they could deliver. “For that reason it produces a very, very positive business case for investment,” he said.

Mr George said in his view it was the “top unfunded” rail project currently in Wales and that political and public support were important to help bring it to fruition.

The project is part of a wider Swansea Bay and West Wales Metro plan, covering Neath Port Talbot in the east to Pembrokeshire in the west, which aims to increase train frequency and improve bus networks. An implementation plan needs to be submitted to the Welsh Government by October 31 with the plan to be adopted as policy by June 2025. Business case approval and funding would be critical.

Mr George said the Swansea and District Line proposals would, if all went to plan, take five to seven years to deliver. The Swansea to Burry Port improvements, he said, would take around three years. “It does come down to money,” he said. “At the moment the rail pot in Wales and the UK is quite difficult.”

Guessing this is also likely to have been an error, considering there doesn't appear to have been any kind of public announcement and we're only 4 days away from that date.

That appears to be true. A technical difference between Network Rail's 'brought into use' and everyone else's 'open for passengers', by the looks of things!

The station appeared in error in April, soon corrected. This time round there has been no correction. Presumably waiting for some dignitary to have diary space (note: my own supposition there).

I looked at this one recently. From the online documents there seems to be an issue regarding direct pedestrian access from the surrounding area being down a narrow lane, whereas the application suggests pedestrians will take a safer but longer indirect route.

Once again, the PR team is forgetting about Filton Abbey Wood with their ‘first new Bristol station for 96 years’ statement.

I suspect the station will attract a few passengers from nearby housing, as well as park and ride, as it will be much closer to them than shirehampton. It’s also not an unreasonable journey by bike from Portbury dock (there’s a path over the Avonmouth bridge that connects to another path going through Portbury) - maybe a bit of signage would help promote this.
