You have mentioned route maps. The routes he’s referring to would be low speed loops/sidings. There’s no way a Driver would be able to traverse every single crossover or running line whilst learning a route, it’s not practical. Whilst route learning a lot of time will be spent looking at maps aswell as physically travelling over the route and most Drivers (including myself) will have a look at route maps occasionally to refresh themselves with more obscure moves.
Commercial pilots carry airway and airport charts to cover off the unfamiliar. These used to be physical but are now usually a tablet computer. Is this (or could it be) a thing for train drivers?
I do accept though that this wouldn't stop any expectation bias.
I would expect the logic is that if the theatre box always illuminated then expectation bias would lead to the content being overlooked on occasion.Yes, that's correct, in the sense that I have observed it. The first time I noticed this was on the down relief entering Reading: theatre box for various platforms, and possibly even the up fast in the down direction, but blank for platform 8, the 'main' route.
Also, a pal who works for GBRF has shown me a Dec 2013 signalling notice, Peterborough station capacity enhancements or something like that, and the adjacent signal on the up slow approaching Peterborough appears to have that very arrangement - theatre blank for straight route to platform 1.
