Wouldn't surprise me - always see the 41 running very empty through Old Town! And the same goes for the 8, both parts could very reasonably be reduced to run every 30 minutes without leaving anyone behind from my observations and I'm sure others can also comment.
Yes the southern ends of both routes should be fine every 30 minutes, the northern section of the 8 would benefit from returning to every 15 minutes so all in all this apparent plan looks to work rather well if you ask me.

My one concern would be is that how will it work in the early mornings and late evenings/weekends, you couldn’t have them being hourly on each for example or say the 9 only running during the day.

Yes, I believe the A68 was the number assigned to this route via Cameron Toll in the Eastern Scottish heyday. It connected to the old A7 at East Preston Street although I don't know if this was a favoured bus route junction.
But now of course the A68 ends in the middle of nowhere.
Eastern Scottish ran frequent services into Edinburgh via both Gilmerton and Cameron Toll. When LRT first started running to Dalkeith at deregulation, the Gilmerton route had the more frequent service.

The situation reminds me of the 33 & 48 a while back. Obviously they still had the 29 to the City though. Looks like it'll be a connection for passengers unless the timings with the X31 work out well which won't be the case for most.
With the 33/48 there was no direct links to the city centre lost as everything was covered by the 3, 29 and 49 whereas here Roswell has completely lost out

My worry is how much pressure this will put on the already busy 3 & 29 along Gilmerton Road, i can see myself using the both of those more as the 8 at half hourly will be to tight to use in some cases

I reckon it should be fine, it's only taking off one (relatively empty) bus so shouldn't add too much pressure. Agreed with how busy the 3 is on this section though: shame there aren't enough tri-axles to run on it alongside the other services which seem to need them!

With the 49 withdrawn from Dalkeith its the only bus from Mayfield and Dalkeith to the City. It already needed a 10 minute frequency back but it needs it more than ever now with these changes, most will be full by the time they even get beyond the by-pass

From what I can see on VOSA
  • 2 changed to start at Hermiston Gait instead of Gyle Centre
  • 4 extended to Queen Margaret University
  • 10 changed to start at Ocean Terminal instead of Western Harbour
  • 11 changed to start at Western Harbour instead of Ocean Terminal
  • 15 has a registered variation but has same start / end point as current (Penicuik to Eastfield) which is currently incorrect, shall see if this comes to pass
  • 19 extended to Eastfield
  • 22 extended to Granton Harbour
  • 30 curtailed to Queen Margaret University
  • 45 curtailed to Eastfield
  • 47 changed to serve Cammo, Crewe Toll
  • 48 extended to Musselburgh Grammar School
  • 49 curtailed to ERI
  • N11 changed start point to Elm Row
  • N14 changed West Granton Road to Nicolson Square only
  • N22 curtailed Princes St to South Gyle only
  • N200 introduced with same route as 200
  • N400 introduced same route as current 400
Does this mean the 30 won't be going through Newcraighall and Musselburgh, but onto the new slip road off the A1. This would allow deckers to be used.

I will also agree that a grain of salt should be taken with all of the VOSA registrations. Things like the 15 still saying Penicuik - Eastfield when it hasn't done that in years mean that there will likely be things that aren't quite accurate like the 47 still saying Crewe Toll for instance. We can get a rough idea of the changes but certainly there will be some things that the registrations don't quite cover

Absolutely. Minor route changes such as a new loop or a change in the middle of the route are very hard (if not impossible) to spot within the VOSA registration.

You would think this is likely where all of 176-190 (and if 195-199 are joining too?) are going to be needed. I’ve had a look at a potential scenario for the 46/48 - as described previously, and the PVR is somewhere between 20 and 25 - which would be very high for Marine. That is the two routes running every 20 minutes each and combining to be every 10 minutes. Therefore you’d think it’s certainly quite possible for Marine to lose the 2 back to Longstone? The 45 would probably stay put. Still, that’s a very high amount of singles for Marine. While possible, I do fear every 30 minutes on these routes probably won’t work, especially when they are not alongside each other. If it was this we’re probably looking somewhere between 15 and 18.

If (and this is a big if) the 30 is finally becoming a double deck I wonder if we may see frequency enhancements to the 36 and 38? Again impossible to tell.

Lots of missing pieces to this and I’m sure all will be revealed soon. This is certainly the biggest network change since the trams started in 2014, and possibly since Neil Renilson’s days.

Could be a pretty high number of vehicle movements ahead, particularly with the single decks. I have even considered a scenario where all of the Evora’s end up at Marine, which was probably unthinkable before now.

In response to the 47 changes, I've observed as a driver that often you'll empty the bus at Lothian Road, and by the time you're round at Queensferry Street you'll fill back up there. Same tends to happen the other way too. I don't think it's a great loss losing this through route, when the 37 is every 15 minutes throughout the day and makes the same connections from kaimes/newington/bridges. Couldn't say if putting the 22 down that route makes any more sense, as someone said above that seems a perfect tester for a tram extension to Granton.

I'm so curious about how the 22 is going to Granton from the city centre. If it means following the current 47 route from Lothian Road, then it wouldn't even stop on Princes Street at all. I'm living along the 22 route and not close to the tram stop, which would mean I'll lose the bus to the east side of the city centre. It might be better if it goes through Leith Walk again but that would be a long route to Granton and we already have the 14 going that way...

Certainly the biggest network revision since the the one in March 2000.

Best guess here would be from Lothian Road taking the 47 route as you say, as this would cover the filling up at Queensferry Street as eh1 says.

I'd definitely bet that the 30 would go to doubles, as I can see this being the reason for the likely routing down the A1.

If there had not recently been a fare review I would have suggested that a time-based ticket be introduced with these changes as seen in other citites, you have an hour and can swap bus within that time eg: for people who used to be able to get the 47 all the way from Penicuik to Granton to be able to swap to a 22 and not pay extra. However, due to the recent changes I heavily doubt that. A shame as this would be a good idea.

I think it simply bolts on to the current 47 route from Lothian Road. Via Stockbridge I think relies on too much losses from the 24, but it could happen. Either way it kills this dogleg that the 22 has had for a while now.

I have to agree, but it then makes it difficult to use up all of the singles. Unless the plan is still for some to be left for 20/63 - or some are departing. Whatever happens I do think 1-10 could be doomed.

Another option I had looked at was a potential conversion to single deck for something for the 30 to have enough buses. The 48 frees up 5-6, but that’s not enough? We hear a lot of this vehicle shortage so using up all of these ex Lothian Country vehicles seems risky.

It appears that Lothian (City) are going back to having "via" points displayed on the front screen. I've just passed a 26 showing "Clerwood via Murrayfield Stadium".

They’re not. That’s for the rugby, and some drivers are continuing to use them.

To be fair getting rid of the Via points was a confusing decision, i’m sure it wouldn’t hurt adding a little bit underneath the destination blind permanenty!

I know LCB and ECB have them with their city services except the 43 but its pretty clunky.. for example

North Berwick
Musselburgh Prestonpans

Would it not of made more sense to have it be
“North Berwick via Musselburgh“ or programme scrolling text underneath like First had many years ago!

I agree that intermediate points being displayed on LED destination screens would be nice. One argument Lothian could make against them, is that it could mean reducing the text size of the destination, potentially making it harder to identify from a distance as well as making the destination screen more cluttered. I could imagine them using the 3 intermediate points that used to be shown on roller blinds for city routes, and either have them stationary or scrolling, but in the case of LEDs hopefully they'd be able to implement them in a way that they are displayed in the correct direction (unlike on roller blinds) and each intermediate point is deleted once it has been served.

The old dual screens worked really well in my opinion - they ensured the destination was in a large legible font while still showing via points underneath. It would definitely be useful for services such as the 34/35 or the 48/49 which run similar routes but via different intermediate points.

The 34/35 in particular since they both share terminuses on each end of their respective routes! like 35 via Chesser and Royal Mile or 34 via Leith Links and Longstone

46 could be via Royal Infirmary and Bonnyrigg and 48 could be Royal Infirmary and Newtongrange!

It just occurred to me that this next service change could link Musselburgh with almost every Midlothian town now! on top of the 140/141.

Strongly agreed, they were my favourite type of LED destination screen, espescially useful for people who are unfamiliar with where which routes go. The 34/35 and 48/49 are good examples, with showing the same destination and serving many on the same places, but going different routes in many places. For service 34 it could show Longstone, Princes Street, Lochend while the 35 could show Chesser, High Street, Easter Road to show where they differ. As for the 48/49, the 48 could show Newtongrange, Mayfield, Greendykes while the (current) 49 could show Royal Infirmary, Bridges, Leith Walk as it used to on roller blinds.

I would disagree with all but the last quote, I think if intermediates are to be displayed then they should be on a screen of their own to avoid having non-essential info on the main screen, and the text displayed should be kept to a minimum, e.g. "
North Berwick 124
via Musselburgh

" and then the via point removed once you pass it e.g. in favour of a more specific destination e.g. the above becomes "
North Berwick 124
Tesco

", or "
Edinburgh 124
via Musselburgh

" becomes "
Edinburgh 124
Semple Street

".
The only exception should be single deck vehicles which don't have room for two screens.

That could actually work! I always found it frustrating how the ECB/LCB services have Edinburgh as a destination but never specify where! I mean I know it’s a no brainier if you’re coming from the West as LCB all share the same layover point within the city, but the 43 could at least say Edinburgh: Waterloo Place as Queensferry is still within Edinburgh, it would be like the 15 or 22 having Waterloo Place replaced with Edinburgh as a destination.

ECB have either Haymarket or Semple Street so it would make more sense to have them squeeze in some more text, I gather it’s not the end of the world and at this point the folk who use these routes will no doubt know where in town they terminate but still!

I think that single deckers have the same size of destination screen even though it looks smaller.

I agree about the Edinburgh destination. It should say Waterloo Place on the 43 and the 15 as it comes from Midlothian should really say Edinburgh Waterloo Place same as the X18, X27 & X28 as they come from West Lothian.

The X5 should say Edinburgh Frederick Street, X6 & X7 should say Edinburgh Haymarket and 124 should say Edinburgh Semple Street.

I’m actually surprised that they haven’t opted to renumber the 48 as 148 and the new 46 a 146 and have them run as ECB as they barely go to Edinburgh.

Only the 7900s have smaller screens.

I doubt there are enough resources nor space at Musselburgh for that.

I thought that regards the 46 and 48 but would assume Space at Musselburgh is the issue?

Can't wait for the timekeeping issues on the 47 if the change is as thought. 41 is a notiously bad route for time keeping and since the southern end is currently reasonably accessible with other routes its not a massive issue currently. There were previous issues when other operators tried to run along the A90 corridor to midlothian as a through route.

If the 46/48 are being run from Marine then it’s a shame there’s no suggestion of through services from Portobello, even if just some placing journeys, since that’s the route that empty buses will be taking (and the removal of the 124 through portobello hasn’t been rectified)

Perhaps a gap filler such as a new 46 between Royal Infirmary and Musselburgh Grammar could solve the problem. Every 15 minutes with singles. Runs current 30 route between Musselburgh Grammar and Niddrie before going down Greendykes Road to the Royal Infirmary. Ideally this would be an ECB route but I highly doubt resources would allow it

When searching this thread for the first mention of the “46” (to check I’d got the route right in my head) I found this suggestion from OCTOBER… Not bad!

It just occurred to me that this next service change could link Musselburgh with almost every Midlothian town now! on top of the 140/141.

It’s a strange one , AIUI Dalkeith will have more services per hour to Musselburgh (on the 46/48/140/141) than it does to Edinburgh (just the 3, presumably just every twelve minutes?)

The train must have eaten into the Midlothian-Edinburgh market but even so…

A member of a local Musselburgh Facebook group (where info of these changes has now made it to) claims to have seen a double decker 30 this morning passing Lidl. I know this to be an impossibility due to the low bridge at Newcraighall but it's peaked my interest - does anyone know what she might have seen? Would an additional rush bus run direct from Fort Kinnaird to QMU? This routing is available now however a return routing is not currently available.

When searching this thread for the first mention of the “46” (to check I’d got the route right in my head) I found this suggestion from OCTOBER… Not bad!
Wow that’s surprised me, thanks for noticing that. I should clarify that was a random suggestion related to the subject and I know absolutely nothing with what Lothian actually do. Still, at least one of my ideas has turned into a real route so it must work!
