Transdev offers unique bus sponsorship deals to drive the North's business success

North of England bus operator Transdev is giving local firms a chance to take their message onto the road with a unique new bus sponsorship offer – following a successful trial with one of Britain’s most prestigious retailers.

Transdev teamed up with prestige retailer John Lewis to promote its newest store in the North, in the Victoria Gate shopping mall opposite Leeds City Bus Station, with high-profile messaging on two buses seen daily on the bus firm’s flagship routes.

A different spin on third party advertising. Could we see more of this in the future as Transdev look to recoup costs?

With regards to Barlick versus Earby, the route into Barlick also serves major employers in the area (Rolls and Silent Night)

Sadly a Keighley bus driver has received serious injuries today following a crash between a school bus and a tractor on the A629 Aire Valley Relief Road.

Residents have spoken of their shock after a bus driver was seriously injured in a horror crash between a school bus and a tractor on a major road in the district.

The smash, which has caused severe damage to the front end of the yellow bus, led to the lengthy closure of the A629 route between Silsden roundabout and the Hard Ings roundabout in Keighley.

The crash happened shortly before 9am today near the point where the Parker's Lane bridge crosses the A629, in the Utley area of Keighley. Walkers passing over the bridge were quick to send their best wishes to the driver and his family.
The school children has already been dropped off at the time, only the driver and another member of staff, presumably the MyBus chaperone were on board.

Someone was predictably very eager as is always the case on there and has already marked 1343 V209EBV as withdrawn on BusTimes

A pretty horrific incident, and just goes to highlight how much of a risk it is driving a bus. Very little in the way of safety if it all goes wrong, no seatbelts, no airbags, no crumple zones...

Sincerely hope the driver goes on to make a full recovery.

A fast bus from Burnley to Colne via the motorway is probably one of those ‘nice to haves’ that just don’t stack up in the current world. Skipton has been served by the Mainline before of course.
Going back to Burnley and Pendle days a half hourly limited stop service used to ruin between Heifer lane and Burnley using 2 buses, this was in the days when all fares were cash and no returns so every passenger had to pay.

Stops were Burnley Bus Station, Duke Bar, Queensgate, Briarfield, Nelson, Walton Lane, Phillips Lane, Crown Hotel, Skipton Rd, (Bus station on return) and Heifer Lane. With the Wizz taking 67 mins it seems operating down the main Rd. would have made more sense.
I've often wondered why Earby isn't better connected to Skipton. The current options from Burnley/Colne to Skipton seem to go the long way round, Earby would be much more direct. As you say, the 280 has Barnoldswick and Skipton covered and would suit anyone who just needs to travel between the two towns.
Driving Colne to Skipton is virtually identical in time, running vie Barnoldswick or Earby, it surprised me but it is.

Seconded, I'd hope the more modern version of the fleet is more crashworthy.

It'd work as an hourly extension of the Witchway perhaps, but, yes, it's not viable on its own.
Plus they might have done this to increase capacity on Mainline Burnley to Nelson, which is rammed a lot of the time.

Burnley to Nelson on Mainline remains every 10 minutes. One of the current M3s is replaced by the new M6.

Knowing how solid the B10BLE's are built, that looks like it must have been a pretty nasty impact.

Wishing the driver a speedy recovery and so glad to read it happened after the school kids were dropped off.

I think with Rosso there were some bits worth buying but also a lot of tendered and marginal work, with the added downside of competition in Greater Manchester, and Transdev then added even more tenders. The best situation for Transdev might have been for them to go bust and then cherry pick the best routes a la Halton, but who knows how far off that might have been and whether someone else would have bought it first. Gaining a presence in Greater Manchester might yet pay off if they win some franchise contracts.

Team Pennine is just confusing to me. It doesn't really fit with the rest of Transdev, either geographically (I think it only has (edit) two routes which meet other Transdev services, and those only run once an hour) or in terms of the high quality relatively frequent trunk routes which are what Transdev are known for. It seems to be mostly tenders and scrappy hourly routes serving places First have deemed unprofitable - I would have thought it more a fit for someone like Centrebus than Transdev.

(This was supposed to be a new post)

Burnley April service changes are out:

Contracts lost, we already knew.
Pendle Wizz withdrawn, will be replaced by an hourly Mainline service M6.
M3 reduced to hourly. (So basically one bus is diverted from Trawden to Skipton)

The 2 and 68 will be combined in a way, with the 2 running hourly through to Higherford and Colne and the half hourly frequency between Burnley and Nelson maintained by a new service 2A, which will also skip some stops in Nelson. It looks like with this change Barrowford will go from 3 buses per hour between the two routes to just one. Exact route is not specified other than serving Nelson Morrisons, I assume it will take the number 2 route through Barrowford to serve the college.

I notice they mention Wi-Fi and USB power for the 2 and 5, but not the 1,3 and 4. Does this tell us anything about which vehicles they are getting?
The Solos have WiFi and USB chargers, the Stratas don't (however when it was announced Transdev had won the Pendleside routes, it specifically said brand new buses with WiFi and USB chargers will be introduced)

No, on the core Mainline section to Nelson, because there'll now be Pendle Wizz traffic on it as well
The loss of the 'fast' bus between Burnley and Colne will be a shame. The Pendle Wizz does this run about 15 minutes quicker than the Mainline services and must take up some of the demand with its double deckers.
Trawden has been named as one of the most desirable places to live in the North West - which presumably means that it has become more gentrified and everyone has a car - hence an hourly service may suffice.
Will they still run deckers to Skipton on the new M6? If one M3 was diverted to Skipton as an M6 then each service would probably be self-contained (as the M3 is now) - M3 with two buses and M6 with three. So they could run deckers on them. I'd like to see an hourly X43 extended fast to Colne though, yes in the evening it might have some reliability issues but it should be Ok heading south in the morning and with trackers now intending passengers can make a judgement as to whether to wait for the X43.

The B10BLE is pretty robust, it must have been a big shunt into- presumably- the trailer.

I hope the driver makes a speedy recovery.
Oh dear, I hope so too. Does this mean Transdev are short in terms of fleet too?

That was my suggestion, the X43 being extended fast. Either that or Transdev will lose passengers to Northern. The 280 should see an uptake in passengers too, as it will now be the fastest way to Preston I think.

They've been telling people on Facebook that there will still be a decker in use at least at peak times and they claim more capacity into Skipton in the morning peak. How well that works we can only wait and see. No timetable available yet. They do run a decker on the M2 for Clitheroe school times, but as recently as yesterday you can find complaints of people being left behind because only a Versa turned up.

This issue there is a lack of vehicles to extend the X43. There are only enough E400s at the moment to run the service between Burnley and Manchester, extending it would need require more vehicles which aren't available. Maybe when the electric stuff arrives for Harrogate some of the B5s might find homes elsewhere to boost other fleets, but with nothing else on order and an increasingly unreliable older fleet I think Queensgate are going to struggle in the short to medium term.

There actually is enough vehicles as when those vehicles were purchased the X43 ran every 15 minutes before COVID

They obviously don’t see the fast link to Colne as financially viable. How many passengers would just transfer to the Mainline instead and how many would be lost entirely is the question, and how many use it off peak anyway

Good point!

Suppose if it was possible to extend the X43 though it'd have made more sense to do it now rather than integrate it with the Mainline as they have.

I forgot about the new Witch Way buses. Was a bad time to buy them as well. It can't be cheap having a fleet of new high spec deckers which have never been utilised as intensively as was presumably intended. There are 14 of them, but the off peak timetable now only requires 9 and I think 11 at peak times. I don't think they get used for much else if anything at all.

I read (via Transdev's social media person) that the Pendle Wizz buses are clapped out and in need of withdrawal, and the other deckers at Burnley are not young either. Is there a reason why it wouldn't make more sense to send out anything not needed for the Witch Way to cover the Mainline capacity requirements? Other than them being painted the wrong colour?

Could it be that like the MMC200s at Blackburn that the X43 MMC400s have only got limited destinations programmed into them? Personally I think they should have had a couple of MMC400s painted into generic Transdev Go/Pride of the North livery so that they could have been used on other services as/when needed and they would have gone down well with passengers on Pendle Wizz rather than the older deckers that they've been using.

It all depends how much flexibility you need in the first place and the trade off of the value of branding v reduced flexibility.
And how strictly vehicles are kept to the route. Arriva have be known to refer to route promotion rather than route branding hence vehicles not being on the branded route which could have some merit as certainly I have experienced the interior branding of a Harrogate Route 7 vehicle attracted the attentions of most passengers when it was in use in place of one of Harrogate Electrics on a local route.

A whole topic in its own right, but we'd better not go OT. :D

The new Mainline timetable with Skipton is up https://images.transdevbus.co.uk/downloads/230416 Mainline M3 M4 M5_1.pdf

Also a new timetable for services in the Padiham direction, which has mostly only very minor changes. https://images.transdevbus.co.uk/downloads/230416 Mainline M1 M2_1.pdf

There is an additional journey into Skipton in the morning, so buses will arrive at 0826, 0839 and 0853 (It appears two of these will then run empty all the way back to Queensgate). However there is one fewer departure from Burnley in the afternoon, and the last bus is at 1815, half an hour earlier than the current timetable, and that is already early. Burnley to Colne goes back up to every 15 minutes on Sundays. Burnley to Skipton takes 20 minutes longer than it does on the Wizz.

I must say these timetables are rather sloppy. The biggest error (I've found so far) is that one M5 per hour is shown as terminating at Earby rather than Barnoldswick, but the return journey still starts at Barnoldswick, and the timings suggest the latter is correct. But if you read the wrong page it appears the service is halved on that section.

There are also a number of M5s mislabelled as M6s. In the M1/M2 timetable some 152s don't have times at Padiham, one service is I think wrongly stated to call at Clitheroe Grammar School, and one short journey randomly appears to terminate at Ightenhill Park Lane in Burnley (and there is no stop of that name - I presume this is the Tim Bobbin stop renamed because I think the eponymous pub has closed).

The biggest changes I can see on the M1 and M2 are that the 0816 journey from Accrington (Mon-Fri, it still runs on Saturdays) and the 1455 from Burnley to Clitheroe will no longer run, in both cases leaving an hours gap in the timetable, and in the former case a 14 minute gap immediately after the 7-8 minute morning peak frequency from Padiham. The return legs of those trips still run though, so either Transdev have developed a sudden love of lots of dead mileage or possibly this is another symptom of the evident lack of proofreading.

So it looks like the time difference between Wizz and M6 vary through the day, some are as little as 10 mins extra in the early hours later reaching 15, and 20 mins at rush hour.

Any mistakes are obviously a symptom of such a last minute shake up of the Burnley-colne section of the network.

Personally, I don’t particularly disagree with the return of the former 28 in form of the M6 HOWEVER, this would be far more sensible if X43 was re-extended to colne, putting it back in touch with its Pendle witch background. With the spare vehicles they have, I don’t see why this can’t be an option, even with knock ons from MCR traffic. Just needs very carefully timing.
