Are the Electrostars showing 'wear'?

Interior doors being over sensitive and springing open and incessant squeaking can be irritating

Most people don't care as long as they get from A-B, if it is very irritating, just sit in the middle part of the carriage.

Is it just me who finds that the seat-back trays on the 377s creak ridiculously loudly? If the train is well-loaded but there's not a lot of background noise it's almost embarrassing to open or close them.

Have they always been like this or do they need some additional maintainance?

They have all been like this for an extremely long time, I am not sure maintenance can help, except replacing said tables, which should've really been done in the 'refresh'. There are very few that don't squeak as loudly.

I certainly don't think Southern's lacklustre cleaning regime has helped the 377's appearance of late. I've noticed these build-ups of dust between interior panels - even on the units that have been 'refreshed'. In truth I wouldn't say most of them look outdated or worn out just yet though - I think the fact that Southern have had the same livery and interior colours for quite a few years now might have deceived the general public into thinking they are more outdated than they really are to an extent.

Southern has rather more interest in its 377s than WMR have in their 170s.

Not saying Southerns' cleaning and maintenance is the worst around by any means (I think MML might win that award), but I would have thought that a newly refreshed train would not be looking like that a matter of months after being done.

Yes it does seem surprising, though that's hardly an obvious area to clean. Do any other trains have similar gaps in the panels there, I'm not sure I've noticed that on any Turbo/Electrostars. Could it be a problem with the refitting following the refresh?

I agree, especially as the 377s are the integral backbone of Southern’s entire operations, interest in them, is sort of forced. However with WMT, their fleet seems to have variety therefore 170s there will receive considerably less attention or interest.

Some refreshed 377s entered service almost 2 years ago, therefore I’d expect some dust particles to appear but still, it is rather disgusting.

Given how bad a train can look after just a few hours in service, the Electrostar interiors must be particularly hard to keep clean compared to a rather clinical and sparse 700. A 700 can be cleaned easily*, whereas the seats, carpeting, and loads of nooks and crannies on a Electrostar must make it very hard and time consuming.

Deep cleans are one thing, but with cost cutting measures now the norm, by the time there's a deep clean the train has probably got very dirty.

* Toilets excepted. They're a disgrace.

Class 387s definitely have the same gap there (and often the same build up of dust), so I doubt it’s anything to do with the refresh.

Why is it embarassing opening a noisy tray on a train? I can think of a lot worse embarassing things.

Interestingly a young boy got on one of the crowded 3+2 throughout 377s (2+2 at coach ends) and said the train must be 30 years old! His dad corrected him

His Dad should also think about taking his boy to Specsavers because in no way does any variant of the Electrostar look 30 years old.

Well, it's embarrassing in the same way that making any other distractingly loud noise in a public place is. In the grand scheme of things, there are certainly more embarrassing things.
