Polite note: They’re not quite the exception alone. About two-thirds of the /1s also have this interior, and apparently some have already been upgraded and interior has not been touched. Shame, as they could have used this opportunity to bring them into line. The difference is hugely, hugely noticeable when you’re on board. The Connex spec ones have the strong BO smell too, unlike the later /1 and the /2 /4 /5s.
I did think about those older /1s with those high clusters, but I have never been on board on I don't think so I left them out

This still from a YouTube video shows upgraded 377112 retaining the Connex-spec beige walls, circular PIS (with new font) and curved grab rails, but also a disgustingly dirty headrest suggesting @WizCastro197 was right after all in saying that they haven’t changed them?
Ah, here is the link to the video:

In a slightly earlier shot, it does show worn out headrests and the only attempt to internally colourise it, is a single dark blue panel.

These returned immediately after 455 withdrawal :)

I did think they had. Not an area of the depot I visit. Thanks for confirming.

As said before the green astroterf style seat covers not only show up dirt but look faded quicker. Ridiculously stupid that they were chosen in the first place and that they are still going. The ones in 377/6s and ,7s are attached to/part of the cushion i think

A lesson never learnt by Southern/GTR. They probably think they’re saving money by using the astroturf, but if you have to replace it twice as often then it’s a false economy.

They are fine

Anyone travelling on GWR 166S will know what really grim train interiors look like

I agree, and what is more ridiculously stupid, is that Southern must be well aware of this, and they won't replace material in full, nor do the bare minimum and at least purchase new seat coverings of the same material. The video suggests that all Southern have done, is washed them, evidenced by the scruffy way they've been put back on the seats.

This thread has had multiple different discussion points, what do you think is fine? The headrests? They certainly aren't! At least in the 166s' refurbishment, they will get NEW seat covers, not dirty old ones...

I agree, and they are probably not going to replace the next time around. Should've jumped at the chance to replace it whilst they had the chance. There is also going to be a point where half the train needs another refresh and the other doesn't.

I may be wrong but I believe the Southern refresh is including new seat covers, just of exactly the same design as the previous moquette. I travelled on some recently and the seat covers were clean and colourful and they looked as if they were put in yesterday. I simply refuse to believe they were the same ones originally installed.
It appears, from the video, that the seat coverings haven't been replaced and they don't wear out that easily nor quickly.

For some reason the earlier series have far baggies headrests

The units with mostly 3+2 often seem the scruffiest for some reason

A few years back the metal grab handles were battered with the paint chipped off but like the side panels they were treated with a more resistant coating

A poster on here reckoned the early series had the wrong side panels (darker blue) fitted when refreshed ten years ago but I'm not sure this is true as they roughly match the heater covers whereas the /4 series have grey heater covers

On which class sorry? 377 or 375? 375/9 has 3+2 seating throughout.

To avoid starting off-topic discussion in the Class 769 (GWR) Introduction thread, I've began a new thread to discuss whether the Electrostars (357/375/376/377/378/387) are showing 'wear' or if they are 'old'.

From these posts, it is unclear which class of Electrostar the member is referring to, as there are so many of them. However, I do believe it is wrong to say they are all showing wear even though some of the oldest ones aren't yet, thanks to extensive refurbishment carried out by Southeastern/Eversholt on the 375s just a few years ago. The Southern 377s are all scheduled to be refurbished by 2025, although not as extensively, with new reading lights, improved PIS (passenger information system) font and new information screens being the main highlights, except no new seat cover. Of course there are the 376s who definitely do show wear, not just because of the large amount of passengers these trains face on a day to day basis, but because no refurbishment has been scheduled since 2004 when they were introduced.

On the topic of age, I also believe this statement is again misleading, as the oldest ones introduced in 1999 are now approaching half life or are over that slightly and the newer 387s have not even has a quarter of their life complete yet.

What are your thoughts? Surely wear must be exacerbated by the amount of passengers that use these units per day?
Your missing class 379s as this thread should also include them

I intentionally did this, they aren’t in service anymore, therefore no one knows really their current state and they currently aren’t susceptible to wear. Anyone can talk about them, I just left the off the list for reasons stated above, the whole thread is about Electrostars’ ages and wear so you can talk about any one of them!

The Class 378s were partially refreshed but I assume TfL's financial woes means the rest of them won't get refreshed for a while.

GWR too. I still despise the stuff! But I suppose it's better (just) than the utterly dire flat cloth they decided to use in 166205 & LA15.

To be fair, I’d rather sit in this flat cloth than a sandpaper seat that I feel really grubby just sitting in it.

Not if you saw the state LA15 got into fairly quickly. It was utterly rancid. Sometimes the railway loves to re-invent the wheel for no good reason at all - there really was nothing wrong with Moquette!

Found them. This was a year since the franchise re-launch. And just to add to it, a recent trip on SWR (again Flat Cloth).

That’s horrible. Some 450s have 1 in 3 seats in that state.

Interestingly a young boy got on one of the crowded 3+2 throughout 377s (2+2 at coach ends) and said the train must be 30 years old! His dad corrected him

The Southeastern ones are alright, the white interior still looks fresh and the seats are fairly comfortable (Bad class 800 or Thameslink - Good Chiltern trains or surprisingly the s stock trains imo) and that changing from white to dark Blue liveries did make the trains look more new than they where, when they did so 10years ago. The only problems i have with them are that the lights make an irritating buzzing noise on some units and that until this autumn there was no where to charge your phone.

Compared to the metro, Networker, and the Javelins (Aged poorly as all the seats have faded) the Electrostars have aged the best.

Buzzing sound? Are you sure that just isn't the train as a whole, as the 377s make this distinct noise, I can't describe it very well, but it is like a high pitched buzz?

I have to agree. Whilst it’s probably down to effective maintenance, the Electrostars are remarkable for failing to show their age anywhere near as much as some others.

I think its the lights that make this sharp buzzing noise on the Southeastern ones. Your right it is kinda high pitched but its weird that some electrostars are near silent during running and then some have this loud buzzing noise that sounds like a robotic interpretation of a mosquito (excuse the dumb metaphor).

It appears it is the same as some other trains as well, again down to effective maintenance, the 444s and 450s don't show their age as much either, and they are of similar age to some Classes of the Electrostar.

450s are brilliant units on SWR, Been on them a couple of times but they are clean, comfortable enough for 2 hour journeys, and have modern facilities such as plug sockets. Can definitely say they are well looked after.

Got on a Southern Electrostar and thought "I've got a long journey so I'll go to the end carriage for some comfortable 2+2 seating".

For some reason this unit seems to be all high density though.

377120 to 377139, specified by Connex, have high density seating in the middle of all four carriages and low density at each carriage end.

Yeah I got one of those to Southampton the other day. Annoying as I like the 2/2 throughout the carriage, but as you say, the carriage ends have them. So happy days.

I love the Electrostar trains. The 377 is my favourite, but this is mostly due to nostalgia and personal memories of being carried to and from significant events on them. Many happy memories of nights out and drunken returns with my mates on board 377s.

But, I also think they’re generally good quality trains for their purpose.

Interior doors being over sensitive and springing open and incessant squeaking can be irritating
