Whilst I don't think my smart meter has changed my life(!), there are benefits as @jon0844 described above. I have saved money by noticing on the meter that consumption was higher than normal. I found I'd left the oven turned on after making my lunch. Without the smart meter it would have been running all afternoon. If they said they were taking my smart meters away, I would be disappointed. Personally I also see not having to crawl on the floor to take a gas meter reading each month an advantage, but that's probably unique to the location of my gas meter!
And I am quite happy to move to a flexible tariff. I think I would be able to take advantage of the cheaper electricity to do my washing, hoovering etc. If other people prefer to pay the top rate at all times, then that's up to them. Rather like water meters, those who have smart meters will end up paying less overall than those that don't.
And if the suppliers save money, that's good. It might mean fewer of them go bust and put more strain on all bill payers, who have to cover the costs through increases in Standing Charges.
