Trivia: Services calling twice at the same station

This thread got me thinking: which passenger services call at the same station more than once, excluding services which circle back to where they came (e.g. Fife Circle, Dartford loop, Wirral lines)?

The only current one I can think of is Far North with Georgemas Junction.

Back in the 90s Cross Country had southbound services from Edinburgh using the WCML that ran via Glasgow Central and called at Motherwell twice.

No doubt Haymarket has had some double calls in the past for WCML to Aberdeen services.

Any others?

I think Southern trains that run into Eastbourne and continue to Hastings callat Hampden Park twice.

Back in the day Skipton - Leeds trains would come off the main line to call at the present plat 5. The driver would change ends and the guard would go in the cab at the bradford end. He would use bell signals to tell the driver to set back onto the line to Bradford to what was then Shipley Bradford Junction, now Shipley South Junction. Once the signals cleared, he would then go back to go through platform 3 and on to Leeds. Sometime he would stop there, other times he would just run straight through.

Of course it was all absolute block then, classic DMU and no platforms 1 & 2

But about half of the time the train would stop at Shipley twice.

There used to be a Gunnislake to Liskeard stopping service that called at the local halts between St Budeaux and Plymouth twice. It was also the only direct service between the two St Budeaux stations, for which a (rover) ticket could be purchased for the princely sum of £13! A better alternative would be to simply cross the road on foot. The fare was withdrawn once discovered I believe.

Further back in time, the IC CrossCountry ‘Devonian’ ran to Plymouth via Paignton and therefore called at Newton Abbot and Torquay twice. It was much quicker to change onto a Paddington-Plymouth service than to travel through, which I imagine was planned for unit balancing purposes only.

Also there was a Sunday service (maybe up to 2017) from Lancaster to Leeds via Morecambe which called at Bare Lane twice, plus a similar service Monday-Friday

Salisbury to Romsey SWR services I think

If this includes services altered because of engineering works, SWR London Waterloo to Reading via Weybridge services will make two passenger stops at Virginia Water, one on the Chertsey side and one on the Reading side as the train has to shunt between lines there.

Circa 20 years ago, there was a Transpennine service Mon-Sat that ran Manchester Airport (1730 ish) - Middlesbrough (2020 ish) before continuing up the coast to Newcastle, calling at Thornaby twice. IIRC there was an equivalent morning service in the opposite direction, too.

Salisbury to Romsey SWR services I think

Yes, starting at Romsey they go clockwise towards Chandler's Ford and Eastleigh and all stations in Southampton west of the Itchen. After Redbridge they continue north to get complete a loop at Romsey, after which they go to Salisbury. After Salisbury they go back the same way that they came - back to Romsey and anticlockwise to Romsey again. At Romsey, clockwise trains have a stated destination of Redbridge - i.e. one stop before it gets back to Romsey - despite being the long way to Romsey. Similarly, anticlockwise trains at Romsey have a stated destination of Chandler's Ford.

When I was a student in Manchester - I travelled from St Pancras to Manchester Central in about 1966. The route was via Trent station (now closed) to Nottingham, and then to Derby stopping at Trent again -and then onto Manchester - and via Chesterfield - and not the more direct route via the still open Buxton line. Interesting route - but no good if your were in a hurry - and yes it was a Sunday

I believe in Cardiff Valley Lines days (possibly Regional Railways prior to that) the Coryton line service went to Cardiff Bay (alternating with a Caerphilly local service) and the City line between Cardiff Central via Ninian Park was served by extending through other Valley lines services from the Queen Street direction via Central and on to Radyr. Anything to/from Treherbert, Merthyr, Aberdare or Pontypridd would have called at Radyr twice.

Trent station?

It meant trains could avoid running via Nottingham to reverse, with connections to/from Nottingham - and Derby, this saved quite a bit of running time St Pancras to Sheffield and beyond.
