Apart from GA and Thameslink Core, is there any other operator fully rolling out detailed PIS screens (not dot matrix displays) similar to below?

(Thameslink core screens and GA screens which are installed at every station)

Scotrail have departure summary ones at a lot of stations. Saltcoats station has ones just like that but smaller.

Image shows departure screens at Saltcoats Station.

Abellio is rolling them out at stations of all their TOCs - GA which is complete, EMR, WMT and ScotRail.

Then as you said above, Thameslink use them - a different type.

TfW have experimented with their own type in South Wales recently.

It’s amazing how many people just sit and stare at the screen (your top photo from the core), it’s almost like there is too much information and quite a lot of the public just cannot understand it.

There's one on the new station building at Castleford - not sure if it's a trial or a one-off.

How is there too much information and can't be understood? It's got departure time, a list of stations and destination and expected time which are all fairly standard. What it has additionally to other (but not all) is a formation diagram and a scrolling message. It's just in a different layout (stops scrolling vertically instead of horizontally).

Don’t ask me, I just stare in amazement at the public who cannot fathom it out.

Probably just takes a bit of getting used to, or they’re reading the scrolling messsge:

They are fitted at all Marston Vale stations (not getting much use at the moment!) plus Wolverton, that I recall. Might have been added at other south WCML stations since I've been to them, but weren't at Bletchley or MKC the last time I used either.

I believe these are a product from a company called Blackbox. The new screen at Castleford is not the same as this and was manufactured by Infotec, same as the CIS at all TPE stations.

EDIT: I didn't look clearly enough at the photos. The Thameslink screens are Infotec (the same as TPE stations and Castleford) and the Greater Anglia units are Blackbox.

A problem I think with the Thameslink ones is there isn't enough differentiation between the different bits of information. The GA ones do a better job at helping you pick out the key stuff.

I believe EMR are retaining the Infotec screens (some stations have the new smooth scrolling white/orange LED screens) as well as ATOS Anne and TTS Acapela Rachel for their announcements.

Not sure what’s happening with WMT with their Blackbox screens and TTS Amy announcements, as per GA use. Seems to be a very slow rollout with Amy only being used for some generic announcements.

Interesting to see things come full circle, when I first started using rail, screens based on color CRT monitors were the norm. Then we moved to LED dot matrix displays, now it seems we are moving back towards using monitors.

I remember those CRTs. Impossible to read on a sunny day.

I have noticed that Goring-By-Sea (West Coastway) of all places, has one.

Will Crossrail have these type of screens? Currently each station has something a bit different...

Depends entirely on the application. When I’m looking at specify technology for a station, if it’s exposed to the elements and has the potential for sun glare, you just can’t beat an LED full matrix screen. Under canopies, I’m a massive advocate of anti-glare coated portrait TFTs.

The GA ones are all style and no substance compared to what they replaced. Too much focus on being flashy with animations than there needs to be in many peoples opinion.

There was a thread on them a while back that goes into the kind of issues that occur.

The Thameslink ones are far superior with more of a focus on things that matter rather than flashy animations like a PowerPoint presentation where someone has found the slide transition feature for the first time.

I think they could be better but they aren't awful in my view. Not as readable from a distance as LEDs, though.
Some of the new-ish CIS screens at Greater Anglia stations are the smaller type, and mounted quite high up (with the screen at 90 degrees to the platform, not even angled) - I saw them at some stations between Tottenham Hale and Broxbourne. I imagine these would be very difficult to read from a distance!

There is a screen like in the image on post 2 at Derby on platform 2A. Seems a bit odd that just one has been done or is it like a trial?

The Thameslink screens look like what you'd get if you got an experienced PIS supplier to try using video screens rather than LED.

The GA screens look like what you'd get if you got someone who'd only seen some pictures of the railway and asked them to google what sort of things could go on the screens, and got them to mock something up in Powerpoint.

Sure, the Thameslink ones don't have as fancy whizzy transitions, and they're not 1/3 full of advertising, but they do a much better job at giving you the information you need in a quick and easy to read display. I'm really not surprised at the reports above that people spend ages looking at the GA ones, because with all the animation and multiple carousels of pages on screen at once, you can never really be sure if you've missed something important.

I believe all screens at Derby are provided by Infotec. There are up to four different types of screens across all platforms. The reason for the huge variety is to simply ‘showcase’ their products, I believe.

i feel the tfw one is nice but maybe showing loading if possible or facilities in each coach would be a nice touch
