Sorry old chap, but I don't have say "what is so good about" it - you are the one saying it is
no good. Can you come up with a better system? Plenty of people say it is no good but NO ONE can offer anything better .......................without driving away a particular "revenue stream" (as the bean counters would have it)
Yet again, I'm afraid, a gross over generalisation/simplification. Sit down for 10 minutes and work out the TRUE costs of train against car, the train usually wins hands down, even when people are paying "full" fare! Even more so on a season ticket.
Since I did my first post this morning I have been to Bristol and back by train. I didn't book months in advance - the trip was "planned" at 8 this morning. It cost me £5.95 for a CDR it took half the time it would have taken in the car, it didn't cost me £2 an hour to park and I was able to drink a coffee and eat a lemon muffin on the way back - try doing that on the M32/M4/A4/A36 ! It was warm, clean and comfortable.
Quick comparison.
Rail. £5.95 on a railcard (£9 without) CDR. FULL fare (anytime) £9.70 ret.
Car: 56 miles at 52.48p per mile (AA figs on 1.6L Ford) £31.38. (inc parking for 1hr)
Many of the railway's problems are caused by too many people
wanting to use the train not by people being frightened off by exorbitant fares.
Totally agree about the later point about people not having a clue about which train they are on and where it is going though..........
On my outward trip I watched passengers struggling to board a very busy 3 car FGW train - most of these people would have been going to Bath, or possibly Bristol - I waited a further 10 minutes and got into a Bristol bound 3 car SWT train with about 6 people in my car. The vast majority of people would not even have got on this almost empty train had it arrived first - it was a different colour, OUR trains are blue with pink doors !
Perhaps would-be rail passengers should be forced to undergo a "competency to travel" test before being allowed onto a station
The railways do have faults, but let's have some ideas on how to solve them not just pointless criticism. My biggest beef about my local trains? overcrowding, the answer to that is simple - more coaches, everyone knows that.
Your beef is the complicated fares structure - ideas please

I have NO idea.
