When the commentator says 'Matveinko' I think he's saying 'Matt Bianco'.

We did too!
We need another goal here and soon or it’s going to get very nervy. The heat is playing a part too.

So Southgate guides England to their second successive Semi-Final at a major Tournament despite a mediocre record as a Club Manager.

Is it him or the players - what has changed ?

He’s intelligent and he’s learning is what I put it down to.
He’s clearly a better tournament manager than club manager too and we’ve seen that before with other managers. It is a slightly different mindset.

Well it's on the train home but there could be the risk overhead line damage en route.

Something has gone very wrong with the matrix tonight. Henderson has scored! 4-0! WOW

Also if the headlines tomorrow are not:

Harrys and the Henderson
or
"and then one night in Rome"

then tabloids should be closed!

It's a tournament for left backs: Spinazzola, Maehle and Shaw have all been fantastic. Maehle's ball for Denmark's second today was outrageously good and Shaw delivered two perfect crosses tonight.

Yesssss ENGLAND! Great performance, I'm so impressed with our defence, the only chances we conceded to Ukraine were through individual mistakes.

Maguire, Stones and Shaw were all utterly magnificent. Sterling is proving all the haters wrong and has been superb. I'll never not be nervous watching England but I am going to live in the moment and enjoy it as much as I can right now!

Very strange to watch a game from the first minute to the last and be totally assured that England were going to win it.

Once again there's a running gag trending about how since England embraced "Marxism" they've done really well.

I think I felt comfortable just after Henderson scored ;)

Shaw delivered two perfect crosses tonight.

Shaw: No idea why he is in the team. He only passes backwards. Useless.
Kane: Looks like he is pulling a caravan. Useless.
Southgate: too cautious. No urgency or verve. only lets the players pass backwards or sideways. Useless.

Oh, hang on.........................

Yep. I’ve completely disembarked from knocking Southgate or the team in any way at this point.
This is the best I’ve seen for decades and after that second goal went in it hit me that I’m actually enjoying this.
I’ll never be complacent but something special is happening here…

Yes - he knows what he is doing. Keep the ball. Defend well. Score. Defend. Control. Win.

I think I was enjoying it but found it very difficult to process the feelings. It just felt wrong and unnatural to be so calm and assured and in complete control. I found it very strange. Why wasn't I all angsty?

It may have been the most clinical tournament performance I have seen from England. Complete control. Almost taking the pi$$ by the end. Henderson scoring. The matrix is broken!

It really speaks volumes about the team mentality and culture of personal humility that Southgate has imbued in his England squad - Ukraine were there for the taking, Harry Kane was on a hat trick, and he had no complaint whatsoever about being subbed off in the second half. (That left foot volley would have been some third goal had their keeper not pulled off the save of the night.)

That’s what I love about this team. No egos, complete respect for each other, the manager and the team. As a group of role models for youngsters, they’re second to none at the moment.

I saw a tweet that said Southgate has been in charge for 50% of the semi final appearances England have made! Ramsey and Robson only had one semi final each. Southgate has 2. Madness.

A further factoid form my own memory banks: Both keepers in the England V Denmark semi final made their professional debuts with Darlington Football Club.

Oh I like that last one. Is that true?

Kasper Schmeichel (On loan from Manchester City) January 2006
Jordan Pickford (On loan from Sunderland) January 2012

Both excellent. Both several steps above the level they played at. Both clearly destined for good careers despite being very young ( 17 for Pickford)

It is so good when your team scores within a few minutes of the start of a game and especially good when they repeat the performance within a couple of minutes of coming back on just after half time.

I’ve always had a bad feeling about a really early goal - the whole sit back for the rest of the game thing. But tonight was different.

That’s a great little bit of knowledge that I’ll be using to my full advantage on Monday during our weekly Monday work quiz. :)

Going to be a lot of pressure on Kasper Schmeichal's son seeing both their father and grand-father played football for Denmark!

Yeah but in fairness only one played for darlo ;)

Bad news people: the england semi final will be on itv. England have a 17% win rate on itv. Ffs.

We beat the germans - now to beat the itv curse!

To be fair we’ve won on penalties and beaten the Germans over the last few years so I’ll take that. :)

Paddy Power are currently offering the following odds on the Euro semi finals:-

Italy 29/20
Spain 19/10

England 7/10
Denmark 4/1
Think these are quite possibly odds for match results after 90 minutes. If the respective games go to extra time/penalties, they are deemed to have been 'draws' and you wouldn't win anything unless that's what you had separately selected. o_O
