BBC News said that Matt Hancock had campaigned to be Leader of the Conservative Party back in 2019. God, imagine what he'd be like as PM!

I genuinely feel sympathy for the chap - particularly after Cummings character assassinations. Who's not felt out of their depth in their job ?

The good I hope will come from this situation is a permanent undermining of the policy of lockdown once and for all.

I have high hopes for SJ as health secretary... I think he's one of the only politicians with a spine!

Two of the papers (well, the Sun and the Mail) say that he has left his wife as he is ‘in love’ with Ms Coladangelo. Toad.

Maybe he did know it was there.... maybe it was his way to get out of the job. Genuinely wouldn't surprise me.

Now Javid is in the NHS will be privatised, maybe it was part of the big plan.

Evidence for this ludicrous aside ?

Let's also hope he lasts longer as Health Secretary than he did as Chancellor.

As for Matt Hancock - I wish him well. At least he can recharge his batteries and step away from the limelight. I suspect he'll have alot on his plate trying to rescue his marriage.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

The marriage is toast. Both parties have allegedly left their respective spouses and are looking to move in together.

Javid is indeed very surprising. He was telling Boris where to go last March and he's now back this June.
I got that wrong. It is the speed that has taken me aback, it encourages me to think that Johnson has been lining him up since the story broke, maybe he had even heard rumours before hand. Javid has always come across as a bit of a 'cold' figure to me, not really the ideal person for the NHS, but it could be the making of him. If he has leadership ambitions, it won't be a bad place to be. When the inevitable enquiries come around we now know where all the blame will will be placed - 'Hopeless' Hancock. I suspect there is no coming back for him.

However, it is going to be no small job, there is a backlog of hospital consultations and operations as well as numbers of patients who will have not yet come forward with ailments 'because of Covid'. While not necessarily agreeing with @96tommy that the NHS will be privatised, I do think it will be given a bigger part to play 'to clear the backlog' (and that would have happened in any case).

Edit:

The appointment doesn't seem to have everyone's approval:
Mr Cummings tweeted: "So Carrie appoints Saj! NB If I hadn't tricked PM into firing Saj, we'd have had a HMT with useless SoS/spads, no furlough scheme, total chaos instead of JOINT 10/11 team which was a big success.

"Saj = bog standard = chasing headlines + failing = awful for NHS. Need #RegimeChange."

This could be quite entertaining. (Is it just me but the style seems to be straight out of Mar-a-Lago?)

Who on earth gives a <what bears do in the woods> about what D*****c C*****gs thinks.

The fact that the arrogant two faced Mr C*****gs doesn't like Sajid Javid (because Mr Javid refused to fire his own advisers or be bullied by Mr C*****gs) is a plus point in favour of Mr Javid as far as I am concerned.

Sajid Javid also gets on well with Rishi Sunak, as they were both together at the Treasury.

I also think Mr Javid is more likely to question dodgy modelling from "SAGE scientists", and not to be taken in so much by their blatant scaremongering and co-ordinated bullying tactics in the media.

Overall, I think there is now more of a balance in the government in favour of lifting restrictions, which can only be good for two weeks time, when the government has to decide what is going to happen after July 19th.

Oh, come on its entertaining. Just like Trump still believing that the election was stolen from him. Its a pretty miserable day where I am, I need cheering up, Cummings desperately seeking publicity by puffing himself up and deluding himself into thinking he got everything right will do until I find something better.

Why are people feeling sympathy for Hancock? Only his wife and children deserve that.

Agreed, Hancock deserves the vitriol and anger coming to him, my only hope is that Javid will lift lockdown permanently and we never go into one again!

Plus her husband and children. That's six kids who are likely to be pointed at, maybe followed by paparazzi, spoken about in hushed tones, treated 'differently' by adults. As her children (at least) have a live in nanny, it is likely that they don't go to the state comp, but it really doesn't matter where they go, children can be hurtful without necessarily intending to be.

It was reported in the Telegraph (according to his Wiki page) that he does not allow his children to use social media; that was a wise move as it happens, wasn't it, Mr H!

I don't think you would be able to tell if it was a spoof or not!

I think the bit of the tweet that talks about "tricking" the PM makes me think it's fake. That doesn't sound like the kind of thing someone would say, more like what you would say someone else did.

Don't beat yourself up for not foreseeing that Javid would come back in this way. I don't think anyone did. What intrigues me is the previously fraught relationship between Javid and Priti Patel both on policy and personal levels, by all accounts, and how this might impinge in matters going forward to deal with important Covid aspects such as quarantining in which a united front is important if we are ever to make a reasonable recovery from the pandemic. Their hostility to each other was so well documented that you just put the two names together into a search engine and take your pick. Maybe Johnson hopes Patel will eventually resign over something, as he was too cowardly to get rid of her following the proven allegations of bullying and worse.

If that is what he hopes, he may be hoping in vain. I bet she sees Home Secretary as being her ideal post (besides PM). I suspect there is more chance of clearing a rock pool of limpets than of getting her to move. Unlike Hancock, she is popular with party members, is ruthless, and won't engage in indiscretions; like him she has leadership ambitions so it may be the next leader that has to sack her, they may be making an enemy for life.

I am hoping Javid will dig his heels in and refuse to pro-long all this Covid misery. The 19th July is his first milestone - I am confident SJ will scrap the rest of the restrictions in three weeks. Matt Hancock seemed like a wimp at times in letting the SAGE scientists dictate how we live our lives.

That account does indeed belong to Cummings.

I don't disagree with you, but Javid is just as tenacious as Patel and definitely sees himself not only as Prime Minister, but rightfully so, which is why Cummings was so determined to curb his ambitions when Chancellor. With Cummings out of the frame, Johnson can take heed of his wife's pleadings and bring her old friend/ally back into the Cabinet. If it gets to the point where Patel demands the P.M.'s ear to settle a dispute with Javid, and Johnson only produces his usual waffling, then Patel might take the moral high ground and resign on a point of principle, just as Javid did! When Johnson inevitably falls, even if only on his sword, Patel, Javid and Sunak can slug it out, but Sunak/Patel will probably do a Johnson/Gove to keep Sajid out.

I am not sure that it will be Sunak and Patel doing a deal to keep Javid out.

It is more likely to be Sunak and Javid doing a deal to keep Patel out.

Sunak and Javid worked together at the Treasury, and are reported to get on well with each other.

He has said today he wants a return to normal ASAP, we will have to see how much he manages to resist calls from SAGE and the rest of the cabinet, and/or how much he persuades cabinet to agree to an end.

Can you really believe it's the Conservative Party that has afforded so many Prime Cabinet Posts to non-Caucasians ?

Logic says it would be Labour ( certainly not the virtually pure-white Lib Dems) but reality means an Asian Chancellor and Health Secretary.

On the face of it The Conservatives appear to be more multi-cultural than the other Big Parties.

I hate the tories (I hate all the main parties as a matter of fact) but I do laugh when I hear people on the left make incorrect claims that the Tories are racist and misogynistic.

There have been two female PM’s in my lifetime and both have been from the Tories, Labour hasn’t even elected a female leader! this cabinet is far more racially diverse than either Labour or Lib Dems
