She keeps mentioning that they’re “necessary in order to stop the virus running out of control” but, with 2 cases per day, enforced distancing and many industries still shut, is this truly, truly needed at this point?

That'll really help Scotland's economy. The Welsh have been doing it for a while!

I, along with many people I know in Dumfries and Galloway, will start shopping across the border as of Friday. A much more pleasant experience for not much of a journey! The lack of any exit strategy is very much the concerning issue (with this, and most other similar things). If 'needed' now, then when will they not be 'needed'? If you can't or won't answer that question, it isn't hard to deduce there is likely something more going on (and, if they're not being honest about it, it won't be anything good).
It isn't the shop staff's job to enforce the mask law.Shops want people spending. Are they going turn away non-wearers?

If fines/arrests start happening and get widespread media coverage I suspect the SNP will be competing with Labour for worst election performance of the 21st century. As far as I'm aware, it'll be in the form of police spot-checks on specific high-streets and in shops, with fines and arrests made if necessary.
Yes, the further from the balance sheet the staff are, the less likely they are to understand the need to push back against the insanity.I'd imagine that stores that have security guards will do, yes. Smaller ones less so.

I doubt it. I wonder what Nicola Sturgeon will have to do to stop people voting for her. I'm not even sure sacrificing virgins to Beelzebub will be enough.
Well last Thursday she did enough for me - and I saved myself a whole £2 a month in party subs!I doubt it. I wonder what Nicola Sturgeon will have to do to stop people voting for her. I'm not even sure sacrificing virgins to Beelzebub will be enough.

Whose job is it to police the exceptions? It won't be the police, they have better things to do than waste time on this. What if a security guard questions a non mask wearer, and they say they are exempt. They can't ask for a medical history. A random self appointed mask enforcer in the street or a shop should certainly be given short shrift. I suggest something like "how dare you ask me for my medical history. Mind your own business"
Simply repeating the same claim over and over again doesn't make it true.
A recent (June 2020) study by Chu et al based on 172 observational studies indicated that transmission was lower with physical distancing, and that "face mask use could result in a large reduction in risk of infection".
Good enough for me.
If that is even possible, I'm not aware of any other virus in widespread curculation that we've managed to effectively long-term suppress without herd immunity.Yes, it's unpleasant, but it's doing your bit to contribute to the effort to reduce the virus without having to keep everything closed.
Sorry but that sounds like the rest of the meaningless waffle the government have bombarded us with. You can't reduce a virus any more than you can control it. Sadly people suffering from coronaphobia believe all this rubbish.Yes, it's unpleasant, but it's doing your bit to contribute to the effort to reduce the virus without having to keep everything closed.

How about everyone does as they're asked (unless they genuinely can't) and just wears one rather than looking for ways round it?

Except last night in my region there was a poll put out “would you challenge someone who’s not wearing a mask shopping from Friday?” And the response was 95% overwhelmingly yes. The problem with mandating something so visible is that those who cannot do it are immediately identifiable and often challenged/abused on this. I’m not saying I condone this, I think it’s awful, but it’s what happens. This is about people doing as they're asked. People have legitimate reasons for exemption. Those people do not have to justify themselves to anybody except the police. Those exemptions could be very personal.

I wouldn't worry too much about polls - what people say in them and what they actually do in practice are often two completely different things.
