She keeps mentioning that they’re “necessary in order to stop the virus running out of control” but, with 2 cases per day, enforced distancing and many industries still shut, is this truly, truly needed at this point?

The lack of any exit strategy is very much the concerning issue (with this, and most other similar things). If 'needed' now, then when will they not be 'needed'? If you can't or won't answer that question, it isn't hard to deduce there is likely something more going on (and, if they're not being honest about it, it won't be anything good).

That'll really help Scotland's economy. The Welsh have been doing it for a while!

I'm really hoping we can escape compulsory masks in Wales. Enforcing them in shops would be the death knell for many, especially near the border. I haven't cross-border shopped yet, but even an hour from the border here some people do it to avoid the minimum alcohol price. Next time I want to stock up I think I will, it wouldn't take much to cover the petrol cost in saving. Combine it with a trip somewhere perhaps.

I find it unbelievable that politicians don't expect people to vote with their feet and wallets.

I, along with many people I know in Dumfries and Galloway, will start shopping across the border as of Friday. A much more pleasant experience for not much of a journey!

In my recent trips to Tesco (weekly) in England, I have seen fewer and fewer people wearing masks/coverings. At the outset they were widely in use and I started to feel like the odd one out for not having one. The past couple of weeks I haven't seen a single person wearing one. I haven't caught it or died as a result.

Today the first bus I have been on since lockdown had 11 other passengers - 2 wore masks (so did I, but I took it off when I sat down). I wonder what will happen in shops - I suppose the presence of more staff will make a difference.

Shops want people spending. Are they going turn away non-wearers?

It isn't the shop staff's job to enforce the mask law.

As far as I'm aware, it'll be in the form of police spot-checks on specific high-streets and in shops, with fines and arrests made if necessary.

If fines/arrests start happening and get widespread media coverage I suspect the SNP will be competing with Labour for worst election performance of the 21st century.

I'd imagine that stores that have security guards will do, yes. Smaller ones less so.
Yes, the further from the balance sheet the staff are, the less likely they are to understand the need to push back against the insanity.

Hopefully police have better things to do than promote coronaphobia.

Yet I wonder after so long if people are arrested/fined to go to court to be dropped? So in other words its OK to arrest citizens for not wearing a mask but let the halfwits that are "protesting" on the A1 a pass? (I don't meant to be off topic here either but really?), I wonder how many politicians will follow suit or will it be once again a one rule for public and another for them?

I doubt it. I wonder what Nicola Sturgeon will have to do to stop people voting for her. I'm not even sure sacrificing virgins to Beelzebub will be enough.

Call me cynical but for me in all this I read somewhere that they hope Scotland could be Covid-Free? found the link https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-53192024

Yes the cold/flu are eridicated all year round (being sarcastic in what I say and not at you personally), viruses in general are going to be around no matter how you to try and prevent it, unless those in power no more than you and I know?

Alex Salmond makes the unexpected comeback and hauls her in...

Well last Thursday she did enough for me - and I saved myself a whole £2 a month in party subs!

Make sure you tell them why you've quit, otherwise it's bit of a pointless gesture. They'll have to take notice if enough people do it.

Back in Tesco Falkirk this Morning (sans mask )

Masks are coming but the one way system and all it's arrows have gone to be replaced with "2M Social Distancing" discs.

Legal "double-back" is back !!

Whose job is it to police the exceptions? It won't be the police, they have better things to do than waste time on this. What if a security guard questions a non mask wearer, and they say they are exempt. They can't ask for a medical history. A random self appointed mask enforcer in the street or a shop should certainly be given short shrift. I suggest something like "how dare you ask me for my medical history. Mind your own business"

And you will be able to go the pub or cafe as well, or have a meal in a restaurant.

How about everyone does as they're asked (unless they genuinely can't) and just wears one rather than looking for ways round it?

Yes, it's unpleasant, but it's doing your bit to contribute to the effort to reduce the virus without having to keep everything closed.

Simply repeating the same claim over and over again doesn't make it true.

A recent (June 2020) study by Chu et al based on 172 observational studies indicated that transmission was lower with physical distancing, and that "face mask use could result in a large reduction in risk of infection".

Good enough for me.

That quotation seems to be more speculative, than a firm conclusion.

If that is even possible, I'm not aware of any other virus in widespread curculation that we've managed to effectively long-term suppress without herd immunity.

Sorry but that sounds like the rest of the meaningless waffle the government have bombarded us with. You can't reduce a virus any more than you can control it. Sadly people suffering from coronaphobia believe all this rubbish.

That’s where it has the potential to turn nasty, especially with it being an emotive issue.

This is about people doing as they're asked. People have legitimate reasons for exemption. Those people do not have to justify themselves to anybody except the police. Those exemptions could be very personal.

Except last night in my region there was a poll put out “would you challenge someone who’s not wearing a mask shopping from Friday?” And the response was 95% overwhelmingly yes. The problem with mandating something so visible is that those who cannot do it are immediately identifiable and often challenged/abused on this. I’m not saying I condone this, I think it’s awful, but it’s what happens.

I wouldn't worry too much about polls - what people say in them and what they actually do in practice are often two completely different things.

Because some people like being contrary!

In normal circumstances I would agree with that but there's been a real nasty streak in people regarding face coverings and not realising just how many people are exempt. It's a far greater number and I know as soon as I go outside again I will likely need to explain my exemption about a hundred times only for it to never be believed because I don't look like I have any disability. Had Aspergers for as long as I remember and it's something I've been told constantly for years up until fairly recently
