Quite. They pretty much reversed British Rail from decades of decline and made rail travel more appealing for the UK. The Westerns and Deltics would have been replaced by 47s and 50s in any case. Standardisation was already in full swing before the HSTs entered service.

Came across a siding full of Palvans at St Dennis Junction (Newquay branch Cornwall) in the late 70's. Told restricted to 30 mph due to derailments. Very rusty - they had been there a long time! Found a picture etc. http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/wagon/B772972.html

North British win diesel loco wise with their shunters, and Class 16,21,22,41 & 84. Of those the class 21 wins. Only 20% were ever available at best and some just never worked & became xmas trees!
Cravens win DMU wise. The class 112/113 win as they not only rattled & were under-powered but the were scrapped very early.
New DMUs the pacers win. The class 140/141s win as they make the ones that remain seem luxurious with dampers added to the suspension & better power trains.
EMUs - I nominate the class 307. It has all the worst aspects of the slammers and none of the good seen on southern units. Very under-powered and on the most basic running gear known to man. The DC to AC conversion also made them heavy & space was lost inside.
As for new EMUs none are that bad (ignoring the seats) if you consider how awful some 1st Gen units were.
If I was to give an overall winner, it would be the class 21. It did not work, looked awful and bankrupted NBL

Or, luckily their only 2 major accidents demonstrating their flimsy construction have been when they had few/no passengers on.
Mind you, not as bad as the 141's were, worst thing on the network in my lifetime.

Thought I’d see more XC220s. I guess that could be a separate thread called worst Trains currently on the network. Virgin 220s are very nice though imo

They're a niche solution to a niche situation. If a dogbox was still running the branch, there'd be big questions about what to do post-2020. It'd probably end up with a cut&shut single-car battery 230.
There's no way it's as ugly as a Multipla though!
It's sort of comforting to be reminded that stupid ideas got funding, even back then. Nothing's changed!
Yep and the second class seats weren't aligned with the windows
that was the beginning of the end!
