Yesterday I passed through Grantham station and noticed that part of the large station building was now used as an estate agents. Given that so many Victorian built stations are no longer in use for railway business, what uses have you seen at stations? (Apart from private dwellings, cafes and offices).

Some of the station buildings at Kyle of Lochalsh are a museum dedicated to the line.

A small railway museum has opened at Harwich Town. A hairdressers and beauty salon has recently opened at Mistley.

The GA franchise is different in that the TOC has responsibility for station buildngs rather than NR. This appears to be a better arrangement as occupation of the station buildings, even by a non railway related business, makes the station a more pleasant environment than a boarded up building. GA are actively looking for partners to inhabit other disused station buildings.

What looks like Hunts Cross' original station building is now a boarded up pub (formerly "the waiting room"... Irlam is a Cafe, Urmston is a Pub... That's all I can remember off the top of my head!

The original station building at Saltburn now houses various retail outlets from pizza takeaway to photogrpahic studio. West Derby station is a Gas Fire shop.

Brackley Central Station (also known as Top Station) is, and has been for many years, a Tyre Fitters and looks rather forlorn and grubby in its current role. However it has fared better than Brackley Town Station (the Bottom Station) which was demolished many years ago.

Almost every surviving West Highland Line station has been repurposed. Not just cafes but bunkhouses, craft centres etc. Upper tyndrum houses the office for the proposed gold mine. I think Garelochead may be available if you have an idea...

Renton's former ticket office/waiting room is now a heritage centre dedicated to Robert The Bruce, run by Strathleven Artizans as part of the wider Scotrail Adpot A Station scheme.

I was just thinking the other day that you see less boarded up station buildings recently with small cafes and other businesses occupying them. It looks a lot nicer, and even a small rent is better than nothing for NR / the TOC's.

Spending a lot of money repairing the semi-derelict building at Attleborough. I don't think there's a tenant lined up yet but it would be suitable for a number of uses.
Just wish they'd install a TVM so I don't have to trek to Diss or Thetford to collect them!

The LT&SR station frontage at Romford has been a shop unit for so long that I doubt if anybody who isn't a serious rail ran even realises that it ever was a station.

Also on the LT&SR the original Leigh on Sea station is now a sailing club. Appropriate for a location where boats have been known to end up on the track during bad storms.

  • Monkwearmouth station is now a museum - albeit currently closed.
  • Corbridge station is now The Valley, an Indian restaurant.
  • Jesmond station is now The Carriage pub. There's also The Valley Junction Indian restaurant (run by the same people as the one in Corbridge) which is housed in an old Gresley carriage and what I understand is a replica of an NER signal box.
  • The original Hyde Park Corner tube station building is now a hotel

Quite a few stations have a taxi HQ in a room or two. Malton is the most recent one that I've noticed. With the demise of loco depots, a lot of staff signing on points have moved into station buildings, so have remained/returned to rail use. The old buffet on the down platform at Westbury closed to become a signing on point a few years ago before reopening in a little cabin then moving in to a room on the up platform.
