Why not, its spares for the future if something goes wrong on 41001 or any other power car they get.
If GWR are already stripping 43195 for spares then the 125 Group aren't going to have much use for the largely empty shell that is left. The 125 Group are much more likely to be interested in a complete production power car in good condition, and there will be a surfeit of spare parts on the market once scrapping of redundant power cars begins in earnest.

Go and have a think about what you are suggesting....

Your idea is for a power car that is being stripped for spares to be bought afterwards to provide spares. Do you see any sort of flaw in that plan?

It would of course depend on what is left after GWR have a go, but there may be something worth salvaging you don't know. But a complete power car or a knackered power would of course be best for 125 group.

Could the two that have been used for crew training be put into service until the refurb ones arrive? Not ideal with the slam doors but would help ease the problems of the DMU shortage.

Absolutely not - there is no chance at all of that happening. There are four driver training sets in Scotland now, by the way.

The lack of TGS (I don't think Scotrail have any TGS vehicles) is a limiting factor - no TGS = no bell/buzzer, and I'd also be doubtful of whether you'd get a CDL lock circuit without a TGS either.

There are plenty of items that could be of use to a preservation group. They could buy it just for the bogies or engine block even if they are not 100%.

Preservation does not have the same finances as mainline companies. Even a small, bespoke washer or bolt could be salvaged that would cost them big ££ to have specially made.

As would moving a big power car which had been purchased...

Didnt stop Boness etc when they bought a few ex-RES mail vans just for the bogies.

Unless they wanted the body intact, there is nothing stopping them cutting it in 2 for transport. Thats how they shifted most of the Irish Rail & NIR stock.

If you wish to continue arguing that the 125 Group should buy a knackered power car, please start another topic, as it has nothing to do with the introduction of ScotRail HSTs.

Wrong. All CDL panels have driver/guard buzzers and a TGS is not required for CDL use, either. Grand Central ran their HST sets with no TGS.

I thought the TGS had the magic box that linked the CDL to the buzzer in the cab? Although I guess you could move the box to another vehicle.

Yes, that's what I was getting at - I've always been taught that the 'magic box' must be working (and if there are more than 1 of them, only 1 working and the other isolated) to make the buzzer circuit work to be heard in the cabs. GC may have done some sort of modification to alleviate this, or my understanding could be out.

Have checked with someone who knows, and the interface boxes between CDL and 36-way jumpers are in the TGS and the buffet. So you only need one of those in the set.

Fair enough - can't say I have ever checked the buffet for an RA Interface box or seen one in there so I can only guess that some TOCs have removed them from the buffet to keep it simple

Alex Hynes told the Scottish Parliament's Rural Economy & Connectivity Committee today that the first HST for Edinburgh-Aberdeen likely for July. Re-furbishment has been a "challenge".

Better late than never I suppose. Just one set again though?

On the EMT HST's the train manager uses the one in the Buffet rather than the TGS as you never rarely see the TM in there.

Probably not the RA interface switch you're talking about there. This box just needs to be working (1 per set, only) to allow the bell/buzzer to work and be heard in the cabs. Apart from checking that it's in the 'on' position before departure, no further interaction required with it by the Guard during the journey

Notice on my way home today a 4car HST in Dalwhinnie heading south as we passed. I assume this is the start of Driver training on the Inverness route. Also notice a power car sticking out a shed in Inverness I assume maintenance training?

On the northbound sleeper this morning, had the soon to be less unusual experience on the HML of passing two HSTs in a row, one at Carrbridge and the other at Tomatin. The first was a short set still in FGW livery, I assume on driver training run. The second, the regular Highland Chieftan.

Still an HST sat with its nose poking out of the shed at Inverness.

Spotted what looks like a Scot Rail MK3 in the background the other Saturday at Wabtec
