Not sure if I have mis-understood something somewhere but which platforms are to be capable of 11 car Pendolino operation?

As far as I know it is going to remain platform 7 and possibly 9. 6 & 8 are now permanently gone at that length. No other platform in the 1 to 6 area can be stretched to that length.

The new platforms 6, 9 and 10 (the current 7, 8 and 9) will be capable, with platform lengths of 270, 270 and 267 metres.

How is platform 9 (new) going to fit a 11 car pendo if the track for the new 7 & 8 have encroached onto the existing platform? It's not possible for both 6&9 to be 270m

I'm just quoting what both the Train Planning Rules and the Signalling Scheme Plans say.

Worth noting that there will only be a single track running into new platforms 7 and 8 from the throat with the point work to take you into either being further into the station. New platforms 7 and 8 are both only 156 metres long.

Just looked at the new setup. I can't see how an 11 can go in. The platform has been cut back too much to fit one in.

Can't the original 8/new 9 be extended? I think it was just shortened to allow construction work to be done. The new platforms 7 & 8 join up with the old 7. I really am mixing my platform numbers up now, ha ha.

Judging by the signal base that has been put in, the cab of an 11 car would be virtually underneath it, so I would think not.

There is a 2015 presentation (which has been quoted before) online here:
https://www.slideshare.net/merseyrailways/merseytravel-committee-presentation-dec-2014

Thank you for linking that. It certainly makes it more clear what is proposed.

I still don't quite see the point of gaining 2 platforms and losing two others. Moreover the goal of "wider platforms and safer train access" seems to be negated.

A big driver seems to be getting Pendolini into the slow line side "during perturbation" but, for the times this happens, could they not just use the ladders to reach the fast l

There's only one platform being lost. (old platform 1) not 2.

There's an item about the recent project in the new issue of Rail magazine (#839, pp. 24-25). It says
During the first nine days, attention focused on work to enable Platforms 1 and 2 to open for temporary bi-directional operation, which was achieved on October 9.

I'm having difficulty understanding how terminal platforms can work other than bi-directionally.

Platform access not limited to entering from the up and leaving on the down lines or vice versa.

It must mean allowing access to the WCML. During the partial closure Platforms 1 and 2 only had services to Manchester via Chat Moss, I think only using one or two tracks to Edge Hill. Very poor choice of words though!

I'm sure there was an Up Chat Moss train leaving on what I'd regard as the Down Slow the other day - is that now practice?

No, what actually was done, was to enable trains to run on the up slow in both directions from edge hill. The L.O.S. was bagged up and a couple of signals either put in or bagged up to enable bi di working on the up slow. LS53 had a route indicator put on. It's all been covered up now until required again during the next block.

Trains can go out on the down slow out of Lime St. They then get another signal to put them on the up.

Another new feature I noticed this week was a couple of substantial metal ladders fixed to the cutting walls on the route up to Edge Hill.
Maybe these are for emergency use or easier engineering access.
Can't say I'd fancy climbing up vertically for 15 meters or so!
Where the two new platforms are being built the team were wheeling large tubs of ready mixed concrete across the concourse and through the security gates.
You do see some odd things in construction these days.

Platform 6 and 9 will close this Xmas to be remodelled

The current platform 8 will become platform 9

The newly built platform will open as platform 8

Will the current platform 7 (virgin) become platform 6 for now?

Reason I ask this is the new platform 8 surely is also a new platform 7 as two lines were built? I thought two new platforms were built not one?

https://www.networkrail.co.uk/running-the-railway/our-routes/lnw/liverpool-city-region-upgrade/

No mention of a platform 7 here so I’m confused?

Old 7 will definitely become new 6 at some stage, but I don't know when they are going to renumber it.

As you say, the two new platforms will be 7 and 8 but we're only getting 8 at Christmas for some reason. This may be a signalling constraint, they will want to minimise changes to the 1940s interlocking.

As well as several sets of new ladders fixed on the Lime St cutting walls, I noticed a larger installation which might be a new access lift, against one of the tunnel portals.
The city end of the cutting/tunnels also now has bright new lighting, with temporary lights at the Edge Hill end.
It can't be easy working in the near dark down there in the restricted space.

Not just 6 and 9, it is a whole station blockade again. Virgin, TPE and LM terminating at South Parkway again. Northern at Hunts Cross and Huyton.

Surely if Platform 1 is to disappear later next year, won't they have to re-number again ?

Mystified as I am why the north shed must lose a platform under remodelling (bearing in mind that the elimination of defunct carriage roads will presumably provide a lot of space to play with, and even taking into account the curvature of the rracks leading into it), I would have thought that the new, extra-wide platform 1 could most sensibly be used for Transpennine services via the Chat Moss and (when Glasgow services begin) Wigan lines. The sheddy bits alongside could then be repurposed as new waiting rooms and retail units.
