It shouldn't really be an issue, Liverpool South Parkway is due to be used again as the terminating point, and then just catch the Merseyrail straight into the city centre.

Not too bad going north, but coming south it's more than a little crowded!

Are you saying that lots more people are trying to get out of Liverpool than want to go there? (!) Maybe the evening peak outbound is just a lot more concentrated...

No :D .

What I was saying (poorly) was that (in my experience) getting from the Euston train to the Merseyrail connection is easier than coming the other way - basically because it doesn't really matter if you get held up since there'll be another one along shortly. Going south I wonder how much time you'd realistically need to allow to ensure getting from Platform 5 to Platform 4 in time?

I would say a good 10 minutes at least as you will have to go up the stairs from P5 then across the bus station, through the gates and queue at the top to get to P4

Normally, yes. But when 350 people have come off the incoming Euston Pendolino and you are one of 350 people heading for the next departure and the queues for the lifts (wheelchairs, buggies, people with cases...) are blocking your route ... getting across South Parkway is a different matter entirely!

Local news saying Huyton or Liverpool South Parkway are the options. I suppose there is a reason why Edge Hill cannot be the railhead...

It' impossible to run a RRB service from Edge Hill as its on a main road with minimal parking facilities

https://www.networkrail.co.uk/feeds...he-final-phase-of-lime-streets-major-upgrade/

Train customers will still be able to travel in and out of Liverpool this summer when the final, major phase of work to upgrade Lime Street station takes place.

Today (19 February), transport partners in the Liverpool City Region unveiled plans that will keep passengers on the move and Liverpool open for business during the eight week station transformation between 2 June and 29 July 2018.

Lime Street’s transformation is a key part of the £340m railway investment in the Liverpool City Region, which sits within the Great North Rail Project.

This work follows the successful 23-day upgrade completed in autumn 2017 and will include completely remodelling station platforms, bringing the two new platforms built last year (platforms 7 and 8) into use and completing extensive signalling upgrades.

The travel plan will be similar to phase one: keeping as many passengers as possible on trains.

Many main line services will start/terminate at Liverpool South Parkway where passengers can easily access the Merseyrail network to and from Liverpool city centre. Where rail replacement buses are offered, they will be high quality and offer express and stopping options.

Martin Frobisher, Network Rail’s London North Western route managing director, said: “This major upgrade, and the wider Great North Rail Project, is part of our commitment to transform rail travel in the Liverpool City Region and across the north of England.

“With passenger figures expected to double during peak periods by 2043, the work is vital to boost station capacity – making room for more frequent, longer trains, with more space for passengers.

“We cannot safely complete the majority of the work while the station is open so have carefully planned it, with our partners, to cause the least amount of disruption to passengers as possible.”

Frank Rogers, chief executive at Merseytravel, said: “Completing the upgrade at Lime Street is an important step in modernising rail transport for our City Region and is the first in a number of exciting rail projects which are due to be completed between now and 2020.

“Planning is underway to make sure passengers can continue to get to where to they need to go during this final phase and we will continue to work with Network Rail and partners to make sure up to the minute service information is able to help people plan their journeys in and out of Lime Street.

“Once completed, the works will enable Lime Street to handle an additional three services per hour and this increase in capacity will generate very significant economic benefit for the entire Liverpool City Region for many years to come.”

Chris Nutton, major projects director at TransPennine Express, said: “These essential enhancements will allow rail companies to run longer trains with more seats as well as brand new services such as our new Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central service which we are planning to introduce in December.

“In order for the work to take place, there will be significant changes to regular train services over the eight week period but customers will still be able to travel in and out of the city.”

Andy Heath, managing director at Merseyrail, said: “Merseyrail will play a vital role in keeping the city region moving during this final stage, with our services being strengthened to carry passengers from further afield between Liverpool South Parkway and the city-centre.

“Key transport projects like Lime Street, a gateway to the city region, will ultimately boost the local economy, and we are keen to get behind them.”

Work will also take place on Sunday 8 April and Sunday 2 September to complete further key upgrades outside of the summer works. This will mean changes to customer journeys. More information can be found at www.networkrail.co.uk/lcr

Yes, but you can run the busses from Parkway, most Liverpudlians will get to and from Edge Hill under their own steam.

Surely the point is that Liverpool passengers don't need RRBs from Sth Parkway - you can use Merseyrail.

Didn't network rail sever the link from platform 3 at Huyton towards Prescot, when they opened platform 4? Can trains from Prescot direction still turn back there?

Turn back is from 4 now.

Incidentally. That link NR put out is wrong .The new platform 7 is still out of use.

Not to get to West Allerton, Mossley Hill and Edge Hill.

None of those are busy stations, so you can provide a much smaller RRB operation (possibly as few as 2 double-deckers would do) than shuttling everyone from Edge Hill to Lime St. Particularly given that some people will choose to use service buses instead during the work, and a big chunk of the south side of West Allerton's catchment is also close enough to Cressington.

When the wall collapsed, there was a half hourly Occy Road-Edge Hill via Cheshire Lines service, however it didn't meet with an RRB. I caught it once for the novelty, we were told the rail rep was due in 40 minutes-but there was a service bus due shortly. As I had a Saveaway, I caught that. Was a lot slower than getting Merseyrail from South Parkway would have been.

It was in the middle of the day, so it wasn't very busy. I suspect the commuters from West Allerton and Mossley Hill to the likes of Warrington, Birchwood and Manchester appreciated it though!

The fact that a lot of Merseytravel area commuters (more so than some other PTEs, probably) are on interavailable season tickets will really help a lot.
Not to mention everyone between 16 and 18 who's return ticket costs more than £2.70.

If you had an arrangement with Arriva to allow passengers to jump on the 79 that stops outside you wouldn't need RRBs from edge hill. There seems to be one every few seconds at times. The issue with edge hill is that pl4 is too short for an 11 car pendo. Turn rounds are available on pl2 and 4 but obvs LSP is a lot easier to run a service from.

What you could of course do, as sometimes happens elsewhere, is to run some trains (primarily Northern ones) to Edge Hill, but only offer replacement buses from LSP and Huyton. Plenty of people would choose to make their own way - certainly Saveaway and Trio users or anyone going to that side of the city centre. Certainly anyone going to the Uni might as well get off there[1] and walk.

[1] No, not in the manner of getting off at Stockport, Watford Junction etc :D :D :D

This is true but I certainly appreciate the RRB as West Allerton station is at the end of my road, the service is quicker than the regular bus service and it isn't chocka. I wouldn't be surprised if it got axed though because when I say it isn't chocka I should probably more accurately say it is pretty much empty. Ha ha. I would be gutted having to use the 80 to get to town for 2 months if it did get axed.

By Liverpool passengers I meant passengers travelling to Lime Street and/or the city centre.
Yeah of course. Personally I would still get the RRB from Parkway. Would rather take the slower option than the chocka Northern Line service. Not many would I admit.
