Seems that there's a bit of a clash of dates between engineering work that will close Huddersfield station and the annual Food and Drink Festival which takes place in St George's Square, in front of the station.

http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/no-trains-out-huddersfield-one-13247140

Engineering work is taking place on Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6, which will mean no trains in or out of Huddersfield. A bus replacement service will operate.

A Network Rail spokesman said it wouldn’t be able to offer compensation, adding: “Vital engineering work, which will see the upgrading of the signalling system which controls trains movements through Huddersfield and the surrounding areas, is taking place over the weekend of August 5 and 6.

It's unfortunate, but these things happen. But it begs a question: with the roads in the Square shut, how are they going to run rail replacement buses?

Incidentally, is the work just routine maintenance to Huddersfield box or is control being transferred elsewhere?

Huddersfield PSB is being recontrolled to York ROC. I believe this is the first of a couple of possessions to enable this.

Good thing we got promoted then, as that weekend is also the first week of the football season for those lower-league minnows like Leeds!

I wonder if they'll run from the yet-to-be-removed bus shelter on Westgate? Not the one where the 370/371/372 goes from, the one further down as if one is heading towards the Packhorse Centre.

I can't see the bus station being used though as there's not enough room.

The only other alternatives are Market Street outside of Sainsbury's, stop H1 on High Street or Lord Street.

According to a piece in today's Examiner - albeit quoting the Food Festival organiser who apparently only found out there was a problem when the company organising the bustitution called for info - it's going to be the Bus Station.

I guess the bus station could accommodate extra services - the bays at the side of the station where passengers are usually dropped off could be used for the rail replacement operation with regular buses dropping off passengers in the departure stands as per most other bus stations of a similar DIRO design.

Far from ideal though, especially with the lack of seating etc in that area now.

I can't imagine Market Street being possible, although it's possible that some normal service buses might call there to avoid the bus station to free up capacity.

Station due to close 27-29 October too. Ruined mine and most likely plenty of others plans of going over to Liverpool for the football.

Two weekends chosen aren't the best in all honesty.

In fairness both weekends were chosen by the railway before those other dates were set - it was only around Christmas time that it was confirmed that the Food Festival was actually happening after previous funding had been pulled.

This certainly won't be possible during the August closure, see the link in post #3, its a rather more extensive closure than just Huddersfield - Leeds to Stalybridge and Wakefield to Sowerby Bridge/Halifax will be shut.

Apart from the Newcastle to Manchester service described above, other TPE services are terminating at Leeds and so:

The only direct train between Leeds and Manchester will be provided by Northern to/from Manchester VICTORIA. All services on this route are expected to be extremely busy. There will be no trains between Manchester PICCADILLY and Leeds

https://www.tpexpress.co.uk/mediafile/100533005/05-06-august-north-route-map.pdf

IIRC, TPE staff no longer sign the route through Bradford Interchange, so diversions via Hebden Bridge won't be possible.

Are 185s even cleared for the route into Bradford?

They don't go to Bradford Interchange when they divert via Calder Valley (some late night services also intentionally travel this way).

So diversions via Hebden Bridge are possible and happen several nights a week.

They go:

Leeds
Huddersfield, where they reverse
Via Brighouse, Hebden Bridge, Rochdale, Man Vic and Salford where they reverse and then continue to the Airport.

They were cleared via Interchange though, a few were occasionally booked that way in the past, though it's a good while back now.

But not possible when Leeds-Dewsbury-Brighouse is shut. There is apparently even capacity for a couple of TPE tph via Dewsbury and Hebden Bridge in daytime. when the full Calder Valley services are running.

Is that getting shut too?

Yeah there is clearly spare capacity that way as Northern have run football specials and divert late running Calder Valley services that way to make up time.

The way a TPE guard phrased it when posting on this forum was that they no longer signed via Bradford Interchange, only through Kirkgate. Whether that was pre or post 185s, I don't know.

That does leave them without a diversionary route if Mirfield is closed, as his weekend.

The work involves both Huddersfield and Healey Mills signal box control areas being transferred to York.

So basically it will be like this over the affected weekends:

Milner Royd (Sowerby Bridge) to Brighouse is shut, along with Brighouse to Huddersfield/Mirfield, Huddersfield to Diggle Tunnel Box, Huddersfield to Ravensthorpe / Horbury Junction (on the way to Wakefield Kirkgate).

All of those lines being closed means diversions will not be possible except for via Sheffield.

Class 185's haven't been cleared via Bradford for quite a long time now either.

Since the line through Brighouse will be closed, it'll mean that the GC's will start and terminate at Wakefield Kirkgate - that is if there isn't enough room at Bradford Interchange to accomadate the four journeys.

I was just going to post that according to according to https://www.signalbox.org the following signal boxes in the area area due to close this year, so it may be more than just Huddersfield being worked on.

Wakefield, Leeds and Bradford to Hebden Bridge and Diggle
Healey Mills, Batley, Huddersfield, Mill Lane Junction, Halifax, Milner Royd Junction and Hebden Bridge boxes to be abolished, area to be controlled by LNE Regional Operations Centre at York.

Stalybridge-Huddersfield
Diggle Junction to close.

Todmorden to Milner Royd had several weekend closures earlier this year, no doubt Halifax an Bradford will follow in due course.

From the looks of it trains are running from Bradford Interchange and running via Whitehall Jn, with supplementary buses running from Low Moor to Bradford to connect to the trains.

I don't think there's a more appropriate thread for this. No trains at Hudds or Dewsbury on 5-6 Aug, for recontrol of the signalling to York:

https://www.networkrail.co.uk/feeds...plan-ahead-of-west-yorkshire-rail-investment/

A major investment to deliver a more reliable railway in West Yorkshire will begin on 5 August 2017 as the Great North Rail Project continues.

The investment will see the old signalling technology ‘recontrolled’ from local lineside signal boxes to the state-of-the-art Rail Operating Centre in York, resulting in a more reliable, modern and cost-effective railway with the benefits felt right across the rail network in the north.

The nature of the work means on Saturday 5 August and Sunday 6 August 2017 no trains will operate in or out of Huddersfield and Dewsbury stations

During this time, TransPennine Express (TPE) and Northern will operate up to 25 buses per hour to keep passengers moving between Leeds, Manchester, Manchester Airport, Halifax, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Stalybridge and Bradford. This means customers will still be able to get to the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival taking place from 3 to 6 August.

The work will also mean changes to TPE services from Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Scarborough, Hull, Manchester, Sheffield, Doncaster and Cleethorpes and customers are urged to check before they travel.

Passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance over the weekend of August 5 and 6 by checking with their train operator via nationalrail.co.uk

Rob McIntosh, managing director for the London North Eastern and East Midlands route, said: “The signalling system in this part of West Yorkshire is approaching the end of its operational life and we are taking this opportunity to replace it with the latest signal technology which will increase reliability, thereby reducing delays, while cutting the cost of running the railway for the taxpayer.

“There is never a good time to disrupt passengers but this work has been carefully planned over several years to maximise every minute available to us during this weekend. I thank passengers for their patience and assure them that the result of the disruption will be a more reliable, efficient, modern network fit to meet the needs of the economies and communities our railway serves.”

Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Experience Director for TransPennine Express said: “Due to the work taking place over the 5 and 6 August, we will unfortunately be unable to operate any trains between Manchester and Leeds. Customers travelling between the two cities should use Northern services on the Manchester Victoria to Leeds route. Replacement buses will also be running.

“There will also be changes to our services from Newcastle, Middlesbrough, Scarborough, Hull, Manchester, Sheffield, Doncaster and Cleethorpes.

“No trains will be operating to or from Huddersfield or Dewsbury railway stations but the local team will still be on hand to provide help and assistance to customers, including those heading to the popular Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival.

“Customers are urged to allow extra time and check before they travel at: tpexpress.co.uk/changes or at nationalrail.co.uk.”

Paul Barnfield, regional director for Northern, said: “This is vital engineering work which will help pave the way for the modernisation of services across the Pennines.

“We have worked closely with colleagues at Network Rail and TransPennine Express to ensure our customers can keep on the move during the engineering works and can get to and from Huddersfield to enjoy the popular food festival.”

Paul added: “We will be running trains between Manchester Victoria and Leeds during the works, but services which would normally call at Huddersfield will be diverted via Halifax and Bradford.

“We will also run rail replacement bus services from Huddersfield to Penistone, Leeds (via Dewsbury), Wakefield Westage (Saturday only) and Halifax (via Brighouse).

“Working in partnership, we are doing everything we can to keep people on the move, but we advise customers to plan carefully and to check before they travel.”

Information on replacement buses times can be found at: tpexpress.co.uk/changes, northernrailway.co.uk or at nationalrail.co.uk. Replacement buses at Huddersfield railway station will run from Lord Street which is a short five minute walk from Huddersfield station and will be clearly signposted with staff on hand to direct customers.

The project over the weekend of August 5-6 is the first of three stages which will see the signalling moved into the ROC in 2018. The following two stages, which will also see Huddersfield station closed, will be over the weekends of October 28/29 and January 20/21.

The latest information is that the bustitution will be running from Lord Street.

From http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/no-trains-huddersfield-dewsbury-1-13352956

Replacement buses at Huddersfield will run from Lord Street, in Huddersfield town centre. That’s because the Huddersfield Food and Drink Festival is taking place at St George’s Square

It's about 300m away from the station, but I guess as nothing will be running through the station interchange with trains is not an issue. Keeping the RRBs well away from the Food Festival is probably for the best.

Are trains still running to Sheffield during the blockade then? Or is that just the Unexamined being its usual self?

It says elsewhere in the article

Northern will also run rail replacement bus services from Huddersfield to Penistone, Leeds (via Dewsbury), Wakefield Westage (Saturday only) and Halifax (via Brighouse).

Cheers for that. Didn't want to click on the Examiner link because of their hideously ad-heavy site! I know that the Stocksmoor to Clayton West Junction loop is controlled by Huddersfield box at present.

The lack of a Penistone line service will certainly make Lord Street a bit more hectic, as even with RRBs running, many will use the service buses 80-84 instead if on MCards. The same probably applies to Wakefield and services 231/232- all of those services usually serve Lord Street anyway, and I assume they will still do so.
