I don't know if I have mentioned this before but I travelled on one a couple of weeks ago between Manchester and Preston and it was simply devine. Asthetically the train looked much better than I expectected. The inerior lay out was pretty smart, the ride was smooth and the engines sounded fine too me. Overall much better than I expected.

From outside the train, the squealing brakes are almost "ear covering" in amplitude. Very very noisy. As for the engine/turbocharger whistle at full throttle, it seems much more pronounced on 180s than 185s. My commute home usually involves passing a 180 and even allowing for the possibility of 5 "peaking effects" as you pass a 180, the overall engine/exhaust note is considerably louder than sprinters, pacers and 185s, the usual rolling stock on the line I use.

On the subject of brake squeal, I don't think I've ever noticed a single 185 demonstrate this yet. Clearly the rheostatic/engine braking significantly eases wear and tear on the brakes as some of the 185s are coming up for 3 years old. Or else Siemens are servicing better or using better components.

220, 221 and 222 brakes also make quite a loud noise. Some Voyagers sound a lot worse than others though.
While on the point of Voyagers I heard one the other day it sounded like the engine was about to explode - producing some very bad noises.

The Junipers (Class 334 anyway) also seem to have very noisy brakes, compared to the Class 320s and 318s.

All the Alstoms do bizarrely. 458s are perhaps the quietest of the lot - although they do squeal inside the train, with the regenerative noise on top which is very irritating.

Last week I went from Leyland to Preston on 180 103 and found it very quiet and comfortable, I wish I could say the same about the rest of Northern Rails stock.

You were probably sat in the first class carriage with a failed engine ;)

But to be fair, it's pretty difficult to block out the noise of a 1000+ bhp (Someone will correct me on that figure, I reckon :p) on the Sprinters, though.

Although the 323 has a pleasant noise, never been on a 333 so can't really say. :|

I travelled on a 180 for the first time last week with Hull Trains. I have to say, I was very impressed. The seats are pretty comfortable for a modern unit, and I believe that they are genuinely pretty quiet - much more so than the 222s that came before!

The 333's dont really make a noise. Its fairly quiet inside, they tend to throw you about abit though, it seems every siemens made product throws you about!

14x - 225hp
15x - 285hp
158 - 350hp
180 - 750hp

:)

The 180s seem to be behaving themselves at the moment, both diagrams produced the booked traction today.

not seen 103 for a few weeks now. Keep seeing 108 and 106 about. Is one kept for emergency replacement cover?

I had 103 on Monday on the Hazel Grove diagram, it ended up going back to Newton Heath in the evening for attention and hasnt been seen since. 180106 took its place for the rest of the week. 2 sets are required for traffic and the other is the maintenance spare at NH. They are rotated once a week(all being well), there is a ECS path on a Sunday between Blackpool & Newton Heath to swap the sets over. Both diagrams start & end at Blackpool and there isnt enough time to run up to NH from Vic to swap them over. From what Ive experienced they seem to stick to one diagram all week, ie 106 has been on the Hazel Grove diagram all this week and 108 has been on the Victoria diagram.

180103 now has its A car engine running again - although it was isolated when I drove it, and now 180106 has its C car engine isolated. 180108 seems to be the best of the 3.

It was sure out on the 1719 Manchester Victoria to Blackpool North on Friday, with an arrival from Preston around 1515 (assumed to be a 180) at Piccadilly being cancelled.

Looks so bloody bizarre to see a 180 in Northern colours, will upload the video of it tomorrow.

I Guess 180106 has a week off this week because last week was cut short because of 180103 failing?

180106 is back in traffic this morning working the Hazel Gove diagram - not sure if 108 has failed and been replaced....

180103 was on the Victoria diagram - on 4 engines again!!

i passed a 180 on way to work this morning. Judging by the 4 peaks i heard with a gap between 2 and 3, i guess engine in coach c wasn't operating.

180103 was on 5 engines until mid-morning, and it was A engine that was shut down. 180106 did have C engine isolated, but it was also on 5 engines I suppose its possible that it shut down again.....

Nice photos there Techniquest, Victoria isnt the best place for photos!
