Do you actually know anyone involved with Momentum or who supports Jeremy Corbyn?
I am guessing not.
Most of those I know who support him weren't old enough to vote in the 90s!

Says its all really.

There's still enough of them about to encourage the younger generation to jump on the bandwagon

Perhaps so but the fact is that every hard left organisation in the land is pushing for Corbyn. I'm fairly sure that what would happen to Corbyn is what happened to Andrew MacIntosh(spelling?) when voted leader of the old GLC. Within a very very short time an internal coup ousted him and installed Ken Livingstone and his Marxist cronies with all of their loony ideas and frivolous spending of ratepayer's money.

Ken Livingstone and John McDonnell had a big falling out during that period and apparently didn't speak to each other for a number of years. Even now, I never hear either make any reference to the other, though both mention 'Jeremy' all the time during interviews. Another interesting fact is that Margaret Hodge was Leader of Islington Council at a time which overlapped with Corbyn becoming an Islington MP, and was the first Labour MP to say he should step down.

Something else from YouGov here

CtCPOkGWgAA9uAZ.jpg

% of respondents who voted for Labour in 2015 and wouldn't vote for them now

71% - I don't think Corbyn would make a good Prime Minister
56% - I don't think Labour would be able to form a competent government
52% - I don't think Labour are representing the views of people like me
35% - I think Labour has moved too far to the left
26% - I don't like the policies that Labour have been putting forward
17% - Another Party has a leader, policies, or values that I prefer
9% - I don't think Labour are putting forward radical enough ideas
3% - I don't like my local candidate/MP

So whilst Jeremy is still quite a divisive character, there would seem to be some deeper issues, although there is an argument that many of those others can be directly attributed to the leader of the party and his actions.

I also can't help but wonder what party represents the more radical ideas than Corbyn. I would guess that these were the Hardcore Labour Leave voters who've shifted to UKIP or the Conservatives over the EU issue

Corbyn received 313.209 from the total of 506.438 votes. Owen Smith has the remaining 193.229 votes.

In Britain we use commas to separate hundreds and thousands. The way you've written that suggests 313 people plus a 209/1000 of a person voted Corbyn!

I note a sudden rise in Corbyn support in the poll associated with this thread.

I thought it was Conservatives who don't admit to how they are going to vote until the actual date of voting - note the 2015 General Election results.

Owen Smith is quoted today as saying that if he were to become PM he would apply to re-join the European Union. He's continually going on that there should be another Referendum because he didn't like the result of 23rd June. Even Jeremy Corbyn has said the result must be respected whether he likes it or not. .

Biggest problem with the EU referendum was the government agreed the course of reaction for Remain - a list of reforms with the EU. For Leave the government didn't support it so didn't come up with a plan of action so the likes of Boris, Farage and Duncan-Smith could make up any claims they wanted and imply they would happen if we voted Leave so a number of people who voted Leave fell they've been cheated now they've been told some of the truth about what will happen. However, anyone who thought Farage represented ordinary hard working people is too gullible and needs further education to prevent themselves becoming the victim of a serious scam.

What, even more of these? I thought I felt a "Momentum" of this beginning to occur...<(

The Sun isn't a proper newspaper.

Is that why so many more people buy it on a daily basis in comparison to the Daily Mirror? I think you would have liked the Reynolds News as Sunday reading.

So now he can bring unity to the party.

We might have a whole two weeks before the Labour Party implodes next

Are you suggesting the Daily Mirror's some sort of champion of the left wing? Cos I would have to disagree with you if that is what you're suggesting...

Well that is the end of the labour party as a serious progressive force.
The people will never vote for unilateralists.

D'you actually read Socialist Worker? If you think they reflect the views of Jeremy Corbyn supporters then I would urge you to think again!

The point is - which you've missed by not (apparently) reading my first post is that the SWP doesn't actually support Corbyn supporters - they, like everyone else who doesn't belong to the SWP are too right wing - but are backing Corbyn as he will enable them to work their insidious way into the party. Quite soon we will be back to the days of MILITANT and a party within a party. Corbyn has already stated that he may well allow such members to rejoin the Labour party.
Yes I do read Socialist Worker - it's like a left wing version of the SUN in it's wild claims.

Yes, you're correct, didn't read your first post, have done so now.....but SWP is a tiny group of people and I think that you give them far greater influence in affecting the future of the Labour Party than they in fact have. You don't check under your bed for reds each night, do you?

What is the best recent General Election performance of someone standing as a candidate for the Socialist Workers Party?

Labour membership is currently around half a million - the biggest political party in Europe.

SWP membership - I can't find any firm figures, but this New Statesman article claims - very plausibly IMO - around 2000. I make that 250 Labour members for every SWP member.

Even allowing for only a minority of Labour members being actively involved - attending meetings etc., it would be astonishing if the SWP can successfully infiltrate and take over Labour with those kind of numbers!

How then do you think how the Daily Mirror both see and portray themselves?

The Daily Mirror basically portrays itself as a direct competitor with the S*n. And they supported the right wing Blairite candidate in the Labour leadership election.

well that's the next Conservative government elected then. Well done people. Well done.

Because the Blairite wing of Labour have been so good at opposing the Tories, right?

Oh wait... they don't oppose the Tories at all. Because they are Tories in all but name <(

I am no fan of Corbyn but the Sun hardly needs to invent or embellish stories to discredit him. He is perfectly capable of doing of that unaided!

Don't be silly. I guess you missed the 3 election victories then  The polls show that real people don't like Corbyn. They show he will lose. Badly. However when he does I doubt people like you will acknowledge the reasons why. Instead you will look to blame the Blairists/Zionists/MSM/red tories/little green men or anybody but Corbyn and his team of no hopers.

I guess you prefer nice warm comradely slogans rather than power and actually doing something about the problems in this society.

Which 3 are you talking about? The New Labour wins from 97-05 when the Tories literally couldn't organise a p*ss-up in a brewery? Or some other time? Bear in mind that Labour lost the 2015 election precisely because they let the Tory called Ed Balls devise their economic strategy...

Anyway, Labour have fallen in the polls big time, because the Blairites/right wing people in the Labour party have chosen to focus attention on their attempted coup, rather than on the big split in the Tory party; inevitably the right wing press have jumped all over this. Now it's time for the Blairites to eff off and either get on with the job, or go and join the Tories that they've so loyally refused to oppose all the time they've been in "opposition"...

We have fallen in the polls because we have an incompetent leader who fails to lead who is surrounded by clueless advisers churning out incoherent and unpopular policies that the electorate seem very keen to rubbish. Corbyn will deliver nothing but electoral disaster and the end of the Labour party as a credible political force.

BTW good luck with your opposition to the Tories with 12 MP's. Guess how much they will care. That's right. Not at all.

Lost somewhere within Bank-Monument tube station,
I find it amusing when people say "join the Tories" to critics of Corbyn. They should be careful what they wish for.

I'm grudgingly sticking with Labour for the meantime, but if deselections of Labour MPs happen, or if George Galloway is allowed to rejoin the party, then my support goes, perhaps forever. Might vote for the Tories, given that apparently makes me one. :P

What's needed now is for those centrists in the party to try to persuade Corbyn to ditch some of the more unrealistic leftist policies... which will only succeed if his inner-circle learns to compromise and to accept constructive criticism. The centre of the party also needs to compromise too, the two factions will have to meet somewhere in the middle. As long as there are Momentum bods screaming to deselect "Blairites" (are there really any left who wear that label with pride?) a compromise will be difficult.

It's rather diconcerting to hear Corbyn quoting Jo Cox in his victory speech, when prior to her death she was on Momentum's "hit list" of so-called Red Tories to be deselected. Her presence on that list also suggests that Momentum either hadn't researched their hit list very thoroughly, or that any purge would cast the net so wide that anyone who wasn't a card-carrying Trotskyist would be purged.
