18/07/2016 - Tech Was Torn
Musical reference here was Natalie Imbruglia's Torn, for those wondering. I wasn't going to type up a trip report for this one, as I had originally planned to stay at home for my two days off, as a Tech's Bookwork Weekend was in session. However, I was sick of staying in the house, and once the sunshine also joined the heat, I couldn't resist going for a shack score! With the majority of the bookwork done, I got a couple of chores done before a visit to the ATM and onto the bus at 1410 to Llandod. £5.10 paid for the day return and I was on a mileage requirement bus, Optare Solo YD63 VDZ, which was to be boosted to 823.5 miles by 1500. Two other Solos remain under The Magical Thou, as these three Solos don't tend to produce on the Hereford route much.
Some of you will remember some months back, after my last Heart of Wales shack scoring spree, that I was adament that my last 5 of them would be scored before the end of the year. It is, therefore, high time I got on with that mission! Yesterday evening I had considered going up to Birmingham to hunt my last 4 Midland Metro trams, as well as any Chiltern requirements that may produce. However, combined with the desire to finish my bookwork, the lack of available funds put a stop to that. As did not getting to sleep before 0100, no way did I want to get up at 0630!
Bookwork is continued on the trip into Wales, as my count of required shacks was 12 days late now. I set myself on 6th June to do a count every month, so I anticipate the next one to be on 18th August. It'll be noticed by you all I never did start that thread for discussing shack requirements, when I saw how many I needed I deemed it to be too much to do that yet. Maybe when I get to less than 1,000...For those interested [and I intend to post the update in the Shack Attack thread too - Ed] I currently require 1,312 shacks across England, Wales and Scotland. This does include all preserved and light rail shacks, but not Northern Ireland, where I need 44 shacks all in.
Lots of chavs around the station, whereas I make my way to Tesco and stock up on some cold drinks, including three bottles of Welsh cider. Several beers I need here too, one must remember this for future reference! £4.40 gets me a day return to the choice of shack score, Llanwrtyd. Super Dud 150283 is in charge of escorting me there, and it's hot afternoons like this where you wish there was air-con on these trains! We leave bang on time [those of you who read my last trip report on this line will be shocked like I was! - Ed] and we have quite the crowd at Builth Road. Oh yeah, duh, it's Royal Welsh Show! Oh for the days of 37/4s on extras for the agricultural event, oh weren't they good fun, now all I have are memories of 37425 on them [and a YouTube video of highlights on my channel over there in 2005 - Ed]...
Another cider is thoroughly enjoyed on this run, as I continue the 'Stuff I still need for haulage' lists. Good progress is made on the short journey, and more will be made on the northbound journey, having now got to the 321s so far. A paper backup has been needed for some time, as I'm worried I'll lose my NREA and/or notebook at a bad time. Pf course, time was made to enjoy the clickety-clack sound on the jointed track and, naturally, the scenery on a beautiful day. It was a shame to leave the train so soon, but more Sprinter thrash was due so happy days! A natter with the crew during the fester passed time nicely before joining Super Duds 153367+153353 back to Llandrindod, 6 minutes late. Good thing there's a reasonable plus for the bus home! YJ58 CFG with a fast driver home was more tempting than a required pub, so I board for some serious thrash home!
