But I would expect the new brand will not include First(f). "Great Transpennine Railway", anyone? :)

All the old names are available, aren't they?

I think Rail North stated that the Northern franchise must include either 'Northern' or 'North' in the name while TPE must include 'Trans Pennine' in the name.

1720 Leeds-Liverpool today. 6 carriages and still standing room only.

I appreciate it was very much a peak time working, but I'm questioning whether even the improved rolling stock orders of longer trains are going to be sufficient. I'd hate to be on one of the 3-car workings out of Leeds 1700-1800.

Triple units perhaps 3x3 or 3x4 ?

17:20? Direct? Must have been running late, in which case that will be your reason. Any TPE service running more than 5 late will start mopping up pax loadings from the service following behind thereby putting more pressure and increasing dwell time of that late runner.

If its a booked 6 car can I suggest you head to platform 16a and board the rear carriage? As its the furthest carriage away from the station at York, plus Most people stream down the stairs onto the platform at Leeds, congregate between the stairs and the waiting shelter and tend to pile on the front 4 of the 6. That end is also nearest to the exit at Huddersfield!

5 cars will make a heck of a difference over the current 3 we have (they were supposed to be 4)

The downside is there will be very limited routes able to cope with doubling up if the 5 cars are 23m, if they go for 20m then there wont really be any significant gain without doubling up!

Agreed, it's an improvement, indeed the move to proper InterCity type trains is a transformation, almost. I just fear it won't be *enough* of an improvement.

I'd be surprised if they aren't 23 or 26m vehicles, I'd expect AT300s to be 26m. The only outrider would be CAF Mk5 coaches at 22m. The 350s are only 20m because they were tagged onto a LM order and are basically the same as 350/3s except the First Class being 2+1, a few extra luggage racks and I think an extra bog.

Can Huddersfield cope with 2*5 trains at 23 metres for each coach?

Otherwise doubled up trains are only going to be able serve certain stations namely;
Stations covered by Class 91s Edinburgh to Newcastle, then, Durham, Darlington, Northallerton, York, (Scarborough?), Hull (any other intermediate stations long enough for a full HST to Leeds?), Leeds, Manchester Piccadilly, Liverpool Lime Street, Wigan NW and stations via WCML to Scotland.

I'd imagine they will be SDO fitted? Most new stock is.

Having said what I said about CAF, it depends on their construction methods, a 23m version may not be much of a challenge if the 22m ones are just 23m ones shortened by a metre because of Caledonian Sleeper's rather specific requirements relating to fitting the train in at Euston.

1709 from Leeds to Liverpool is booked a 6 car from Leeds onwards. The front set comes ECS from York and attaches at Leeds. The rear set, at 1641 from York, is normally full and standing from York. Even if on time, all 6 coaches are normally full and standing from Leeds to Huddersfield where it quietens down, before getting busy again at Manchester. On the not infrequent occasions it is only 3 coaches it is full and standing from York to Liverpool, and will normally leave people behind at Leeds and Dewsbury and often Manchester Oxford Road too.

That one a manchester job? The one an hour earlier used to be a Newcastle shift and also coupled up at Leeds. I have had the experience of leaving people behind at Occy Road when I have been 3 vice 6. Its not nice, I feel like I am letting people down, even tho its not my decision to run 3 vice 6

The number of 5-car trains being ordered against the services they will be operating does not suggest that there will be any opportunity for doubling up the new 5-car units (185s will hopefully run in pairs, at least at peak times).

Thank you for the info.

A 5 car unit could easily have more seats than 2x 185 when you consider the wasted cab-space and two wastefully designed 1st class carriages in a 6 car formation. A 5-car unit would also need only one accessible toilet and one 1st class carriage.

I wish we were saying goodbye to first trans-pennine express.

Crappy over-priced InterCity wannabe's who haven't done anything remotely innovative.

Can't speak for TPE North, but I use TPE South a lot:

- shortcomings of rolling stock not their fault
- polite helpful staff who usually check tickets
- good punctuality
- when not, prompt delay repay by cheque
- ridiculously cheap advances even at quite short notice
- Airport advance in case of delayed flights

Suits me they're continuing.

Apart from massively growing the Manchester-Scotland market since taking over from Virgin XC through proper marketing and a significantly improved service frequency?

Do you think that the two new franchises that will see new rolling stock coming on line during the new franchise and also certain routes handed over to the Northern franchise will make the TPE new franchise operations any better in your eyes?

It does appear that much will change in that respect, especially when the apparently never-ending electrification problems, which are not the fault of TPE, eventually reach fruition, enabling a better service for passengers.

As long as they still offer first class accommodation in their units, my good lady wife and I will still use their services, hopefully with the new franchise seeing the end of the overtime bans that make life so annoying for passengers wishing to travel by rail as a chosen mode of transport rather than the hassle of septuagenarians having to use the Range Rover for runs to York and to Durham from the Manchester rail region.

Well Paul, I predict that the current situation of West Yorkshire travellers having to squeeze onto trains which are too short will continue ad infinitum, albeit without the option of choosing a slower but less crowded service!

Branding neutral is the DfT way to go....

It's not quite neutral branding, all they've done is eliminate the Keolis 'i' from the TPE logo and replace it with a generic First font label. The big pink 'f' roundels at the train ends remain.
I suspect we won't be seeing new liveries for 185s any time soon..

Northern have gone brand neutral though, all traces of branding are being removed from their trains.
They look quite good without all the words and web addresses.

Do 185s need a new livery anyway? Regardless of what the most updated First livery is, they look smart in the dynamic lines livery. However, 185108 really needs to have its Capital of Culture stuff taken off!

Apparently they will introduce a neutral livery i.e. one not consisting of First Group colours. I've heard a suggestion it'll be Buckingham Green with gold lettering but whether that's actually a proposal they are considering or whether someone had guessed that from the GWR livery is a different question.

What's the betting that it'll be yet another Ray Stenning travesty? <D

While I'm normally in favour of heritage liveries, I'm not sure that L&Y cream-and-brown would look very good on a 185.

It's just been upgraded to 110mph. The units were always capable of it, indeed, they achieved it many times on test before gong to TPE. It's only now that NR have cleared them to run at that speed.

Well TPE, thanks for making a member of railway staff look as if the public know better. Not only that but they have given out the wrong information to the public.
When you say NR have only now cleared it, did it happen sometime after 1630 today? If so then I am wrong, if not I'm raging!
