Couldn't agree more. A slick media image certainly helps and has fooled OP into thinking the BBC dislike him

Milliband also has a slick media image unfortunately it's an oil slick.

Are UKIP still proposing to review the legislation relating to the Smoking Ban ? - I did not see any mention of that on the policies listed.

We are talking about European immigration. That was immigration from the UK to West Germany.

We, sorry you, are talking about a TV programme that was made during the 1980s and the points being made on here are about actual immigration to this country now

At the Doncaster conference, Ukip also expressed a desire to scrap the Inheritance Tax. A bad idea, as it not only redistributes wealth and keeps the housing market fed, but it raises £3.3 billion a year.

Emyr - Exactly.

And if you restrict free movement from within the EU, you end up with a lot of unpicked vegetables, a lot of unwashed dishes, a lot of unmade coffee, a lot of uncleaned toilets, shops, offices, shopping centres and railway stations, a lot of uncared-for elderly people and all the other jobs unfilled that Brits don't want to do.
There was a marvellous song in the BBC comedy Mongrels:

"So let's keep the culture vibrant / With hordes of economic migrants / Who sweep the streets and cut inflation / 'Cause we won't do jobs below our station."

I don't know about the smoking ban but Farage has said something about allowing pubs to have a smoking room, which would be well-ventilated and separate from the rest of the interior, etc.

I doubt a lot of landlords could justify the cost to install/safety check a well-ventilated room in some of the older buildings though.

It is interesting to compare the front pages of the BBC and NOS (Dutch TV) websites

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/

http://nos.nl/

The BBC leads on "PM: I won't meet £1.7bn EU demand"

Dutch TV is more interested in "Cameron wil naheffing niet betalen" (Cameron won't pay surcharge) than the effect on the Dutch themselves. Only if you delve into that article can you see a link to "Nederland moet nu 642 miljoen euro bijbetalen" (The Netherlands must pay back 642 million euros). That is despite their surcharge being higher than the UK's per head of population.

The Netherlands has always been one of the richest countries in the EEC/EU and so has always been a heavy net contributor. Currently, no regions in the Netherlands at all qualify as a "Less developed" or even "Transitional" region so they get very little funding through EU Regional Policy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_policy_of_the_European_Union

The UK still has a number of regions that qualify for Transitional funding and two regions designated as less developed, namely Cornwall and West Wales and the Valleys. Interestingly, Scotland has no regions designated as less developed, yet it is the most pro-EU part of the UK.

And? What does that have to do with the topic? Or are you trying the tried and trusted method of evading the point......
Have a look at what the Coalition is trying to sneak by at home
Pot, kettle...!
Personally, I am waiting for the real story to emerge, because sure as hell this can't be all, can it? Any organisation that springs a whopping bill on a customer with demands for rapid payment is not doing everything right. And sends similar bills to other members who, only recently they saw fit to bail out? Something very fishy going on here.

Some of the posts here are better than The Daily Mail's letters page.

Can't wait for the EU referendum though it would more interesting if the Anti EU side lost.
Still trying to figure out what the Anti EU brigade would do if they failed.
Isn't as if they could do an SNP and try and fight on for more powers.
Suppose Ukip would be finished as a force.
Still, plenty of time to enjoy this sparring before we ever reach a referendum.

Ps, always thought one of the funniest Tory sayings was "In Europe but not run by Europe".

I wonder if the Netherlands are in such a furore?

The Dutch are taking a less hysterical stance than the UK.

http://nos.nl/artikel/713702-hogere-euafdracht-blijft-raadsel.html

Anders dan Cameron zegt Rutte niet botweg nee tegen Brussel. "We gaan het stap voor stap bekijken. We willen eerst precies weten hoe het zit. We willen het tot de bodem uitzoeken. Dat is stap één. Daarna kijken we verder.

"Unlike Cameron, Rutte (the Prime Minister of the Netherlands) is not flatly saying no to Brussels. "We are going to look at this step by step. We first want to know precisely how this happened. We want to get to the bottom of this. That is step one. After that, we shall look into it further."

Maybe the Dutch are less hysterical/worried because they know the EU has miscalculated their income from legalised whoring

Meanwhile, according to the BBC the leading debtors are UK and Netherlands followed by Italy £268m, Greece £70m and Cyprus £33m, good luck getting the cash from those three

I think the concern is more about other nations buying stuff from us...

Indeed. I don't think anyone would be dumb enough to not sell stuff to us, but our economy somewhat relies on goods and services going the other way!

The real story appears to be this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29757296

(Rough summary: The UK has been supplying inaccurate economic data to the EU, which means it's been underpaying for some years. The £1.7bn is the correction to get to the correct amount).

The UKIP person on Questiontime yesterday evening was a total disaster - if they keep putting up swivel-eyed idiots like her they will blow it.

Len McCuskey was brilliant by the way. dont agree with all he said but he chopped up the Tory into mincemeat by the end of the programme.

Not usually a big Fan of Mr McCluskey however last night he didnt say anything I really took issue with . I actually expected him to rip it to the tories more than he did .

The UKIP idiot of the week expressed her belief that capital punishment should be brought back whilst also stating there is no party policy on the belief . So that precludes me from voting for her or them on that basis because as we all know capital punishment is wrong just from a sheer common sense point of view .

Salmond was quiet good given that only one question was actually related directly to scotland . I kind of hope he does make a return to Westminster . Caroline Flint MP didnt really say anything too controversial . And Mark Harper is a Tory so just got hounded for everything he tried to say by all parties although interestingly he didnt really answer McCluskeys charge that the tories are steamrolling ahead with NHS privatization .

Im also interested what the real story is here . How long has Cam and Osbourne actually known about this . And even if they have just found out today is it not their own economic miscalculation that has led to this happening / they should have forseen it because as they like to tell us the economy has grown .

I dont think this is the shock to Cameron he is trying to pretend it is . I think he has known that this has been in the pipeline and could possibly have even known about it far before this story broke .

Do we and Is it?
You are saying that those two that hacked Lee Rigby to death deserve to live are you?
Some of us might disagree with you on that one!

It is wrong yes , On numerous occasions since the death penalty was abolished in this country we have wrongfully convicted numerous people of Murder who have later turned out to be innocent . They are all people who would now be Dead if we had the death penalty . Some of the men we would have killed since the abolition of the death penalty where also terrorists . Would this not have created dangerous Martyrs of them .

As for them two , let them rot in prison . Yes it would be tempting to say sure lets put them to death .But then you turn them into Martyrs , thats what they wanted they tried to committ suicide by police they want to die why give them what they want ?

Im sorry but the risk of putting innocent people to death is for me far too high to actually have a policy of capital punishment . I know in some cases there is irrefutable evidence however wrongful convictions do ,have and will continue to happen . Just to the end of july this year the Criminal cases review commission successfully overturned about 380 wrongful convictions .

Fortunately the experts who actually debate and decide upon these matters dont disagree with what I am saying and that is what matters ;)

Some more info to put all this into context. A look at http://www.ukpublicspending.co.uk/government_expenditure.html shows public spending is around £700bn per year. So the amount the EU has asked for amounts to around 0.25% of UK annual public expenditure.

The EU wants the money on 1 Dec, which means the Government has over a month to pay this 0.25% (even before you consider the arguments about whether parts of the Government knew about this before today). And remember, this is money that would have long since already been paid without question, if we'd had the correct economic data earlier.

Anyone seriously think that amounts to unreasonable behaviour by the EU?

Yay! More support for the party which stands for the insular and self-centred. They get cross when we call them xenophobic or racist and then come out with nonsense like this. "We don't want to be in the EU" shouts that we do not care about standing up together with other countries most like our own to help solve the problems of the world. Are we going to tackle climate change by ourselves? It's painful to watch them gain support on the basis of not liking other countries, and it really does concern me about the future of our own when people are so easily duped by people like Farage.

Yup. The Human Rights Act put the lid on Capital Punishment once and for all unless something really awful happens and we vote some real loonies in. Of course, no parliament can bind its future self, but I am proud that the UK stands among the number of countries who can say Capital Punishment is unacceptable. Fortunately that is not on the agenda.

As far as I'm concerned there's an awful lot of positives in that list

Do point them out? I see precisely 0.

Indeed. And I don't even respond to his 'man of the people' thing. I think the younger generation now naturally mistrust people who smoke, for example. I know I do.

Prostitution is both legal and taxable in the UK. Escorts need to fill in a self-assessment tax return just like any other self-employed person.

Just a reminder that this is not the thread to discuss whether or not capital punishment should be reintroduced to this country. People are more than welcome to discuss this but I would ask that they start a new thread to do so.

Thanks :)

Just as it was about to turn into a discussion on escorts and whoring, I suppose that is off-topic too:cry:

I must confess to being slightly surprised that a) income from illegal activity can be counted in any assessment like this b) the EU claim to have accurate figures c) somehow France and Germany either appear to be more upright than their reputations might suggest, or they have correctly been supplying the data all along.

Or this is a made-up story, designed to embarrass some and remind others of their place.

The independent seem to be running with the idea that Osbourne and Alexander know about this but kept Cameron in the dark: article

This is something I can well believe, the amount of political capital the anti-EU camp have gained (nobody thought to check this on Friday?) is astounding and, assuming this article is true, I wonder how many people will care or have already forgotten?

The revelation that the Dutch Government had put aside reserves to cover a bigger EU bill further undermined the Prime Minister’s case that the UK Government was surprised by the demand.

Why couldn't we do this? Don't bother answering, it's a rhetorical question - at the moment the UK wants to bitch and moan about Europe to appease the right wing fringe groups

There is an alternative hypothesis why Cameron et al might have known and kept quiet about this. I can imagine some delusionists at Tory Central Office think this will play INTO their hands in advance of the Strood by-election if they can show a strong P.M. standing upto the rapacious EU and refusing to pay up and this might garner them a few extra votes that might otherwise have gone to UKIP: after the by-election, whatever the result, they can quietly pay up while still pretending not to.
