September 2014 Haulage Report
September proved to be somewhat quieter than the frenetic activity of recent months which is borne out by the first entry for September being as late as the 10th. Nevertheless, there was still a reasonable amount of activity on the haulage front. Particularly noteworthy was the reduction of Southern 377s required for 10 miles to one example Message to 377466, Im on your case!

A weeks holiday on the Sussex/Kent borders would ordinarily see the haulage book gathering dust. However a day trip to Canterbury produced a few entries worthy of note and it was nine years ago that I last encountered 171730 (then a Class 170) on one of my infamous bus stop bashes from Waterloo to Clapham Junction.
171730 1st time as 171, cleared for 10 miles
375924 Cleared for 10 miles

Back From holiday less than 24 hours and I was headed for St Pancras and on to the Etches Park open day with one of my photographically mined friends. Doing the outward journey in three stages with stops at Bedford & Leicester did nothing for the 222 wants list. On the return we slotted in an extra stop (for all of five minutes) at Long Eaton and managed to net a winning 222 along with ticking another EMT 153 for 10 miles. Hooray! With the Nottingham fasts making extra stops, we managed to avoid 222s into St Pancras and enjoyed the luxury of HSTs all the way back from Leicester. Memo to self Must do more with Midland Mainline HSTs mileage is generally low.

London Midlands Great Escape offer was too tempting and it would have been rude to decline their kind offer. An early start called for Chiltern to get me northwards. Specific targets were (i) another ride or two on the Stourbridge branch (one day, those 139s will top 10 miles) and (ii) to try to knock out my last LM 150. In the end I did somewhat better even though I needed to be back in London by about 18:00. Nine new haulages (including the aforementioned 150105) were not to be sniffed at along with eight new shacks Old Hill and Lidlington were two of the more diverse places visited for the 1st time . Both of my LM 323s fell so now its just a matter of getting the remaining bunch for the magic 10 miles. My last outright 378231 (I still wanted four of them as 378/2s) greeted me in Euston so I thought it impolite to let it go without me! The added bonus of 378221 (one of those needed as a four car) back from Willesden Junction made it doubly worthwhile.

It had been a while since I had played with South West Trains on a Sunday afternoon so I thought that Id give it a go. A quick inspection of the engineering announcements made me rethink my calculations as most of the consequential reductions were likely to be 450 operated services. Plan B was to take a look at London Overground as I had the option of three 378s still required as four car units along with most under the requisite 10 miles. I had not figured on getting all three though although 378224 took some tracking down as it seemed to always be going the opposite way to me.

Rather successful Sheffield - Meadowhall red pen bash today. I either waited around for a required unit or, on one or two occasions, made a move back to Sheffield to pick up a required unit.

Although I should add that I surprised myself how many BSBs I did! That being said, we need to determine, as a community, what mileage forms a BSB!

Wow!! Good trips there! Can't wait for the beginning of November when I am off. Need to do a few trips myself as I had to postpone the Cardiff and Edinburgh trip due to a family emergency.
I'm hoping to do the Cardiff/Edinburgh trips before the end of the year then the three capital cities would have been visited and a few of the valley trains and north of the border trains as well.
I need to get up there for some solid unit bashing! Thing is, I'll get irritated by all that required track I missed during the summer in Glasgow!
Did a Lincolnshire Day Ranger today with HST moves to Nottingham and back. Huge amounts of track and every train scored a winning unit/tram!
