In your opinion. Where as the story voted in 2009 as the best Dr. Who story in history, "The Caves of Andronzani", didn't feature the Daleks at all. In fact it didn't feature any of the regular adversaries.

The only good thing about that Androzani hokum was Peri :p

Looking forward to The Doctor Who Christmas Special featuring by all accounts Daleks, Cybermen and Sontarans.

I just hope this time the opponents are not marginalised and given plenty of air time and dialogue.

Who knows there may be an appearance by a certain D...........:p

And the marginalisation of The Daleks and complete absence of Davros in a story supposedly about the biggest Dalek invasion of all time ?

Davros supposedly died in the first year of the time war though when his ship flew into the Nightmare Child, I was glad he wasnt in it. Hes a single individual theres no reason he has to be present in every Dalek story and he is way overused in my opinion, its a trope he always manages to make it to an escape pod after apparently dying and hes always rebuilding the Dalek race the next time they meet.

1st appearance, creates Daleks, buried alive after being shot.
2nd appearance, Daleks are digging him up because they are in a stalemate with their war on the movellans and they need him to win, ends up prisoner of humans and put in stasis.
3rd appearance, Movellans won and the Daleks are running for their lifes, need him to create an antidote to virus. Ends up being apparently blown up after dying from the virus.
4th appearance, hes rebuilding the Dalek race from scratch using humans, has his hand blown off and prisoner of hostile daleks.
5th appearance, civil war between him and the Imperial daleks. Supposedly blown up.
6th appearance, Davros rebuilds Dalek race using his own cells. blown up.

How dare you impinge the honour of Dav "lazarus" ros :p - nice bibliography by the way.

I like the "Daleks are running for their lifes" bit on point 3 :p

Sorry to be pedantic, but on the 5th appearance (Remembrance of the Daleks, 1988) the Imperial faction was Davros' lot and the renegade faction was hostile to them, oh and if you look closely at the mothership explosion scene, Davros manages to escape.

I have written to the BBC asking them to ensure Davros is in the Christmas special and can he have at least one line saying something like "hello Butts I am alive and well":D

That would be wonderful

I wonder what Davros would do if he encountered the "toast famine" that sometimes results in no 2nd slice being forthcoming on East Coast 1st Class.

Those were the days when we had loads of Daleks plus their creator :p

Genesis of the Daleks is generally accepted by most Dr Who Fans to be the greatest transmission in the history of the programme.

Unfortunately a lot of the forum members are to young to have witnessed it's original showing - indeed some of them are barely able to recall pre-Eccleston episodes of Dr Who.

Can true and not arriviste whovians join me to acknowledge Genesis of the Daleks as the no 1 ever story :p

Incidentally it also featured the first appearance of a character who shall remain nameless

Not really. Remembrance of the Daleks was the only 7th Doctor Dalek story.

The 6th Doctor had one Dalek story, three years earlier (1985).

The 5th Doctor had one Dalek story, one year before that (1984).

The 4th Doctor had Dalek stories in 1975 and 1979.

That's 5 Dalek stories in 13 years (or the last 3 in 5 years).

Genesis of the Daleks is certainly one of the best Dr Who stories. Definitely top 10 (Along with The 5 Doctors, Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, Logopolis).

Scary that I don't think I've missed seeing an episode for 22 years...almost all in real time with a handful watched within 48 hours.

Never! Muah ha ha. Power of the Daleks all the way. If it really had been rediscovered as is heavily rumoured it could be reevaluated in either direction of course! In hopeful it would live up to its reputation however :)

I rather enjoyed Genesis Of The Daleks when it was first screened but wouldn't go as far as to say its my favourite Doctor Who story. The Caves Of Androzani, Blink and Dalek are all better IMHO but the recent Day Of The Doctor trumps the lot by a country mile. Well thought out, alternately emotional and funny and thankfully limiting the number of Doctors in pivotal roles. To have included more would have diluted the plot too much to get them air time. :D

Butts........thanks for making me smile! Your commitment to the cause of Davros is outstanding. General Custer had the same sort of approach..........<D

Not a problem old bean .....

I'm sorry I can't agree with you about Day of the Doctors - aimed at arriviste whovians rather than those like my self who were DWAS members in the 90's.

With regard to that Androzani hokum , as I mentioned before the sight of Peri's cleveage has addled everyones minds

Davros....yes he deserves a mention  as the creator of the Daleks and hence the greatest foe the Doctor has ever encountered. Tom Baker did not have the heart to stop what Davros had started - those wires so nearly touched !!

I was only 10 and still getting used to Tom Baker when Davros first made an appearance. Michael Wisher did a good job I thought and was admirably supported by another character who gave me the creeps - "Nyder" or something like that. I wasn't too enamoured of the following couple of actors who had a go at the role but Julian Bleach on the other hand really nailed it for me. His insanity perfectly portrayed. :D

I forced my eldest daughter (now aged 24) to watch Genesis Of The Daleks (on VHS ;)) in 1995 or thereabouts. She initially thought Davros was Scottish, basing this on her assumption he was wearing a kilt! :D

It was pointless trying to explain......:D

Nice to see the Daleks but the episode wasn't nearly as good as the Tennant+Hurt 50th aniversary special. I was screaming 'regenerate already' at the telly when Matt Smith was still arround after the golden fireworks of his regeneration and Amy Pond was reapearing.

I wonder why the weeping angles didn't make a reapearance after the Doctor escaped them earlier in the episode (maybe the Daleks exterminated them somehow), and how the Doctor managed to defy the truth field, and how the Dalek-woman managed to get her hands on the Doctor's TARDIS. I suppose those might be explained in breif snatches that I missed.

I too was heavily into Dr Who in the 1990s , but I never joined the DWAS as it was very much seen as pro JNT, and I was firmly in the anti JNT camp.

Couldn't make head nor tail of the Crimbo episode. Rather disappointed with the finale....

I have to say the same as well. No way as good as 'The Day of the Doctors'

I look forward to the new episodes though.

I agree. I thought the 50th anniversary special was amazing, but this Xmas one was very disappointing. On the plus side, I'll grant the story was imaginative, some of the acting was extremely good, and there were some very nice humorous touches - I loved the boyfriend stuff, and the cyberman head. But on the negative, the plot seemed full of holes and inconsistencies, which made me wonder whether anyone bothered to seriously review the script before they started producing it.

Amongst some of my issues, the early battles with the Daleks, Cybermen, Angels and the Silence didn't seem connected to the main story - for me they came across as throwing some monsters in for the sake of it. The time would have been better spent fleshing out the main story. And no, the strange disappearance of the angels wasn't explained as far as I can tell - I thought that was the most glaring problem. Also, it didn't seem believable that Clara basically didn't bat an eyelid at the Doctor being so much older each time she returned. And there was no explanation of the Doctor's change between the end of the 50th anniversary episode, when he was apparently enthusiastically about to start searching for Gallifrey, and his attitude in this episode, where he appeared quite keen not to find Gallifrey. Nor was there an explanation of how the very strange Christmas community managed to establish itself on a planet with almost no sunlight, apparently no technology, and with the key time rift in one of their buildings. And I'm sure previous episodes made clear reference to the Doctor being buried on Trenzalore - which clearly didn't happen.

More viewers than Coronation Street, apparently.

BBC said:
Doctor Who's regeneration was the most-watched Christmas Day television moment with 10.2 million viewers seeing the five-minute sequence on BBC One.

However Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas Special, also on BBC One, was the most-watched complete programme with an average of 9.4 million viewers.

An average of 8.3 million watched Matt Smith bow out as the Doctor while ITV's Coronation Street averaged 7.9 million.

It beat rival BBC soap EastEnders for the first time in more than 10 years

My late brother in law was in the DWAS in the 90s and often said to me that a great swathe of the membership were convinced that the show belonged to them and nobody else had the right to make any decisions as to how it should return/develop. He felt that it was bordering on the political, with factions manoeuvring for position and almost laughable as a result. Sadly, he died before the 2005 relaunch although he did manage to see the Paul McGann film of which he, like me, wasn't too fond

I don't much care for the phrase "arriviste whovians", not only because I wouldn't dream of using it in conversation, but also because Doctor Who is just a television program and not the intellectual property of any one particular group apart from all its general viewers that is, whatever age they are and in whatever period they started watching it. According to the viewing figures the producers would appear to have got it right. You don't make a program like Dr Who just to appeal to a limited audience, not on that sort of budget you don't! ;)

The Christmas special was a bit stilted IMHO but they were on a hiding to nothing having to follow what is likely to go down as the single most popular episode in the show's history. Parts of it were slow and, like others, I couldn't work out why they bothered with some of the monsters on display but then, you can't please all of the people all the time.

Butts, commiserations on the non-appearance of your old mate once again. I'm sure he'll be along one day to scream "destruction" at you from the idiot box!

If it's any consolation, I was having a pint with Davros at the "Crown and Crossed Sink Plungers" on Christmas Eve and he sent his best wishes, just before he was thrown out for cheating in the festive darts tournament. <D

Your point about DWAS is probably relevant, indeed members are/were somewhat akin to "train spotters" with regard to nit picking any aspect of the show.

Does Davros use a straw ? And how does he throw darts ? :p

And I'm sure previous episodes made clear reference to the Doctor being buried on Trenzalore - which clearly didn't happen.

I think this was meant to be the battle where he died, and the one from earlier this year shows him turning up a long time afterwards to his grave, which presumably won't now happen because he's changed his future ... or something.

This was as patchy as hell, the acting was good and the basic idea was interesting, but the way the story was chosen to be shown was all over the place like some of Moffat's episodes do tend to be.

Some moans:

- The Mother Superious charachter revealing she was a Dalek, it echoed the 50th's Lethbridge-Stuart giving away being a Zygon too much
- Also, she sounded too much like another River Song
- Another long regeneration section, were they always this long
- The Time Lords send through some new regenerations, eating these gives Matt Smith the ability to blow up the Dalek ships around the planet, and they were still losing the time war in the 50th?
- The Tardis can translate anything, apart from a message from its own people, as the Doctor cannot understand his own people either he needs the services of a knackered Cyberman head?
- The only way it can be translated involves it then being broadcast to the entire universe?
- Tennant regenerated as himself then? but he didn't behave confused like everyone else has immediately afterwards, is that all they have to do to avoid that
- The last few regenerations have featured him crashing the TARDIS shortly after, as it was still on the planet/flying steady, wouldn't he have thought "I'll just leave it where it is for the moment, won't try flying it" by now?
- Towards the end of the battle The Doctor leads the Silence into a fight, waving his walking stick around. The Silence? the aliens you forget about when you look away from them?
- Clara tells the Time Lords through the crack that they've been asking the wrong question, satisfied with this answer they decide not to bother returning? You can imagine the conversation:
"Right, er, we've been asking the wrong question then"
"well what's the right one?"
"erm, Woman at other side of crack ... what's the Doctors' favourite colour"
"Hmmm, tell you what lads, let's have another cup of tea and come back later, when we've thought about it"
"What's the airspeed velocity of an unladen Swallow?"
"Wrong film, idiot!"

Anyway ...

I wouldn't recommend asking him if he uses a straw Butts. He's a bit of a hard lad and doesn't much care for the implication he likes a martini. :)

As far as darts is concerned, he's got a dead eye, in fact he has two, but he still couldn't resist trying to distract other competitors with threats to detonate the reality bomb. The final straw was when he attempted to create a new Dalek faction from the barmaid's DNA. Security regarded this rather blatant attempt as just plain old groping and wheeled him out PDQ.
