I've not actually seen the old Doctor Who programmes (started with Eccleston), but did they not show him regenerating into whoever came next? I assume he must have looked alot younger back then, so if they showed the younger version of him regenerating wouldn't that make his appearance in the new episode a continuity error?

My understanding from what was said on screen was that Tom Baker was playing a version of the Doctor from Matt Smiths versions future. There's a line where he says something along the lines of 'trying an old face on again'. The implication I took from that was to mean that this was a future Doctor, hence no continuity errors.

Either way I thoroughly enjoyed the special episode 'twas a brilliant story and really well done with loads of lovely moments. Two things I liked: The way they used Billie Piper without bringing back Rose and that they ended David Tennant's appearance with the same line he used in his last appearance as a series regular 'I don't want to go'.

And the marginalisation of The Daleks and complete absence of Davros in a story supposedly about the biggest Dalek invasion of all time ?

I think the whole thing was aimed at "arriviste" Who fans , ie Ecclestone onwards - ironically the said man played very little part in any of the associated programmes. :p

Which makes it even more pointless to have the biggest collection of companions ever if the target audience doesn't know anyone from before 2005!

I couldn't tell who half of them were and I started watching the show in 1973! And I have a few DVD's and VHS tapes of earlier stories!

I concur. It was a clever way to get an original classic Doctor in to the story in the flesh while explaining their older appearance.

A nice touch was that QE1 appointed the Doctor to the position of Curator earlier in the programme. I take this as another sign that he was intended to be the Doctor.

I loved the fact that Rose didn't come back!!!

Why is everyone avoiding discussing the non-appearance of Davros in a story centred around The Dalek Invasion of Gallifrey, and come to think of it the lack of Dalek airtime.

Possibly because it was centred around the Doctor's actions on that day rather than the battle taking place.

Personally I was disappointed not to see Timothy Dalton reprise his role as President.

Because most of us enjoyed the programme anyway so why get worked up about something that did not appear.

can't stand the daleks, and I've been watching it since William Hartnell (even some bit of the excretable Davison & C.Baker)

Do you mean execrable?

If so, "Oi, that's my Doctor you're talking about" (Davison).

I'm wonder if that's why I enjoyed the books that appeared in the big gap between TV series - apart from having the space to delve a bit deeper - and being written for adults - they were largely Dalek-free.

Did anyone else notice the hand that came round the frame as the three doctors exited the picture?

They were wearing a range of different rings and there was a clear moment where they showed the hand for a second or so! My thought was this is how the master got out of Galifrey which has been said in previous episodes, I didn't think it was any of the doctors and Clara was in the backdrop of the shot.

Just a thought, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Great episode, very cleverly planned!

So a Star Trek movie without "Spock" would be acceptable ?

Spock is an integral part of Star Trek whereas the daleks are not an integral part of Doctor Who.

The whole show was surely about changing the fate of Gallifrey so there was no need to include others.

The Daleks are not an integral part of Dr Who ? - notwithstanding the fact people who don't even watch the show recognise them, and they have been about since 1963 !!!

It may have escaped your attention but Gallifrey was being attacked by "billions of Daleks" who may well have dramatically changed it's fate. :p

No they are not, they might be the most used baddies but that is all.

As said the story was about changing the fate of Gallifrey and thats what the doctors did. The daleks were only background to the storyline.

Well I'm afraid we'll have to agree to differ , if you asked most people what they associate with Doctor Who I humbly suggest The Daleks and Tardis would probably be top of the list. If that does not make them an integral part of the show then god knows what does

So,

How integral were the Daleks to the plots of the following anniversary specials:
10th (The 3 Doctors)
20th (The 5 Doctors)
25th (Silver Nemesis)

Can I assume that as you are obsessed with the daleks you have a life sized model of one.

You're wrong. Why are you obsessed with the Daleks? As has been stated the story had nothing to do with the Daleks, it was about the Doctor and his actions.

They are not integral part of the show because a Dr. Who story does not need them to exist. In fact there have been vast stretches where the Daleks did not appear at all.

As for Davros, he hasn't even been around for as long as the Daleks have. The Dalek's first apperance was in 1963. Davros didn't appear until 1975.

Night everyone!

Sorry to interrupt the discussion, but I'd like to have an opinion from you.
I never watched Dr Who before mainly because of unawareness, despite of its average popularity in my country. It seems like it's quite the hit worldwide and it also contributed a bit to the modern British culture, since it has been around for 50 years.

What I ask is, as an author of a utopian British anime based in the London Underground and London that will also have reference to the rich old and modern culture of Great Britain, how important is it for me to view this series and what other popular television series I should look forward to in order to understand a bit more the essence of being British in the current days?

As a "Slice of Life" genre of Anime, Mind the Gap has to have genuine depictions of the life of the characters according to their environment. Sometimes crossovers can exist in this genre to make interesting situations to be explored, like, in this case, having a single dalek hanging around in the streets of London while Bakerloo and City are having a walk.

Thank you for your help.

the best ever Dr Who episodes featured the best Dr Whos (Troughton, T.Baker, Tennant & Matt Smith) and it doesn't matter who the adversaries were

In your opinion. Where as the story voted in 2009 as the best Dr. Who story in history, "The Caves of Andronzani", didn't feature the Daleks at all. In fact it didn't feature any of the regular adversaries.
