Why do you think they would involve drivers or guards in the design of these things, its the people with letters after their names that have all the answers not us poor saps that have to work with the crap day in and day out isnt it! <D

It worries me the amount of users on this forum who suggest that the railways use joined up thinking in any shape or form. ;)

Speaking seriously for one moment though, I think SWT have had very little input when it came to the work being done by Alstom.

Engineers are not Guards or Drivers. Engineers might be happy with a solution for it then take a million years to get through company councils or accepted by unions.

Yes, sorry, I meant someone from SWT who knew what was acceptable for staff. So yes, drivers/guards seems sensible. No offence intended.

Sometimes drivers have a bit of input. The design of the drivers cab for Pendolinos and Javelins had some driver involvement.

Talking about the 458/5 I notice the speedo goes up to 140 mph in the 458s. This seems a little ridiculous if the train can only do 75. Are there any plans to change this ? A speedo that goes up to 90 or 100 seems common for most 75 mph units.

Standard network wide speedo, I think. In their final few years, most of the VEPs / CIGs / CEPs received such speedos.

Didn't drivers have some input into the 450s and 444s? I seem to recall that some went over to Germany.

Presumably Shoveller Rail doesn't see the need for such input...<D

The drivers/ managers went over tyo be trained on the 450s in Germany, these mangers then wrote up the training manuals/ trained the other drivers. The drivers trained were used to test the trains over here.

Some of the things taught over in Germany were not used over here, principally the coupling procedure.

Oh and Tim is a damn good MD and is always willing to listen to any staff member, he is also quick to take those ideas forward and wont just shove them in the too difficult pile. The 458 remodelling is a Porterbrook thing and isnt really anything to do with SWT unfortunately.

Started as a Guard at Guildford and worked his way up. Maybe there can be such a thing as a railwayman in the privatised world!

2014

Seriously though I've noticed on one of the the bulletins at my depot that they have reinstated a seperate 8 car stop marker at Whitton due to delays with the introduction of the 458/5s. It also states this arrangement is expected last 12 months so it gives us an idea of how long we have until we see full introduction of the type.

Have they done, or will they be doing anything about the tinnitus inducing door opening alarms that the 458s have? Or are these a measure designed to stop those boarding from hindering passengers alighting?

What new desks?

The pictures of the (supposedly ex 460s) show the normal 458 cab and there is naff all wrong with that, well apart from the various shades of grey the whole cab interior is painted in! ;)

I thought the same after googling for pics of both the 458 and 460 desks. The controls looked practically identical in the shots I found.

Is it possible then that there's some problem with internal wiring or something like that - presumably they'd report that as a 'desk problem' as well?

Given that Whitton sees regular trains calling there from Aldershot in the AM peak I'm surprised the marker was removed in the first place.

It was reported that the 377/6s had multiple defects, then they suddenly appeared in service. I still reckon early 2014 for the first 458/5, at a pure guess....

Are there any places where the units could theoretically run?

Post on WNXX states the units won't talk to each other and are delayed again before coming in service.

Modern Railways now reckon all the work will be finished by Feb 2014.

I've a funny feeling that might just be the wrong year...

I hear that the £5k fault-free running starts next week. Maybe we might see the first pair in service this year after all.

Has the first pair of 458/0s been sent away for conversion? I ask because during this past week there have been almost daily substitutions with 455s on the Reading line, indicating a shortage of 458s.

Given that SWT don't usually publicise these substitutions I'm glad I don't have a 1st Class season!!

I've been checking RTT regularly for a few weeks in case another 458/5 delivery was planned but haven't seen any movements in the northbound direction, or reported in any gen groups, that any 458 units have left for Doncaster, but that doesn't mean there aren't a couple out of service for other reasons because they are about to go...

I thought we were expecting the first pair not to go until their 'reliefs' had entered passenger service though...

Those sort of snags often take a while to diagnose, but are very quickly fixed once they know what's wrong. You can't really presume how long any particular delay of that nature will be.

Seems to me every new Electrostar variant, (including those yet to be built), has been reported to have 'major comms problems' at some stage, but they don't usually last long, do they...

Well that is a logical thought :)

Maybe so, i belive they are beginning their quest for 5000 fault free miles.

the 379s spent quite a while with Bombardier fitters riding them- or at the very least, riding morning services to Cambridge and back to supervise the coupling to form the 12-car peak services.

Is that what this is on Tuesday?

I suspect not because there would presumably need to be an STP movement from Wimbledon Park to Clapham Yard first and I can't see one of those on Realtimetrains but I thought it was worth asking.

Don't they have those 'Q paths' available in the normal WTT for transfers between depots, between Wimbledon Park and Clapham Yard they seem to be 5Y98 and 5Y99.

If they could use one of those it presumably wouldn't show up as an STP move.
