The writers of this c*** had obviously never ridden a BR class 101 before.

"Modern high speed structure".

I think we've found a cheaper solution to IEP.

Well the chassis was based on an experimental British Rail High Speed Vehicle.

Oh wait, I've missed the word "freight" from that

The opening paragraph stating...."Introducing the civilised way to speed off to the shops, wend to work, trot off to school or head off to the next big match"....makes me wonder which particular civilisation they had in mind....<(

Perhaps the civilisation that fostered the Spanish Inquisition who would have seen yet another torture to add to their methods of punishment and would have been pleased to see the advent of these monstrosities.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but can also ensure that cynicism can be refined to being a mental work of art.

Maybe they should be sent to Scotland now, given that the Fife Circle residents don't like their train because it was built in the 1970s. <D

I'm sure there was a similar leaflet produced when the Class 141s came out, I will have to see if I can find a copy either online or at home.

Did they not have any laws banning false advertising back then?

Given TPE described 185s as introducing their 'new state of the art Intercity trains' on to the Scottish routes they acquired you wouldn't think we had advertising laws even now.

They do say that...."Art is in the eye of the beholder"......<(

With reference to the word "civilised" used in the literature in the first posting, would the "civilised mentality" that was prevailing at the time this document was published be the same mentality that trumpeted the advent of new social housing constructed with prefabricated concrete panels that subsequently were found to suffer from the effects of degradation in the contained concrete reinforcing bars...<(

That's good, but that's not the best part!

More convenient, More Reliable, With Trains so Smooth, spacious, and comfortable you will feel as it your sitting right at home.

Yes, as if my home is unreliable, draughty, and has the comfort qualities of a trolley.

Nice one BR!

I thought they didn't have toilets in 142s? Or by "toilet compartment" does it just mean a compartment that could at some point contain a toilet? ;)

Interesting that they were selling these as an improvement over the 1st generation units, when in fact they are inferior in almost every way.

They'd have been better keeping more of the 1st generation units going until something better could be afforded.

142s have always had toilets I think.

What did the Class 142 "spawn of Satan" become descended from ?

The High Speed Freight Vehicle project and an experiment in lightweight bodywork manufacture using bus-building techniques and even designs derived from buses.

1980s BR were not the first to mount bus-type bodies on powered four wheel chassis though, there's many pre-BR and early BR examples and also many across Europe.

Out of interest, does the average freight wagon have better suspension than a 142?

EDIT: Or should I say better ride quality?

A rebellious bus that wanted to travel on the rail track instead of the road:

Note the indicators on that one, despite it being on a rail track!

Not only that, but it's the sign on the wall behind it to the left - "Transport Relic Shop"; slightly unfortunate that LEV-1 didn't go directly to it, bypassing the need to actually enter production. Hateful things, Pacers...

Does that make the Pacer family a cousin of the Guided Bus?

I don't know, shall we try it ourselves? Great idea for a forum meet - freight surfing!

On the OP leaflet, I like how in the top-right, there appears to be a guy swimming into and about to flop onto a diving board :D
