Hi everyone.

On Friday 2nd August I need to go to Southampton airport for a flight leaving at 1020 so will need to arrive there at about 0930 (online check in and no luggage to check in to the hold). I will probably go from Clapham to save me going into town. I need to return at about 1300 Monday the 5th. What is the cheapest ticket option with a YC railcard? I can't see any return ticket, only two singles at £21 each :o:o making it over 40 quid to do this poxy journey! Is that seriously the best price/option?

Many thanks in advance :)

Period returns between Clapham Junction and Southampton Airport Parkway are only available as Off-Peak Returns and not valid at the times you want to travel.

There are Anytime Return fares available from London, but these are more expensive than your two singles added together. There might be other options but I doubt you will be able to save much.

I know that the saving would be unlikely to be particularly high, but could only one half of the off-peak return be excessed to the anytime fare?

Change of fare type excess will be the full difference, unfortunately.

A small saving of £1.

Gatwick Airport - Southampton Airport Parkway
Route CLAPHM J NOT LDN
Anytime Return
£41.45 Y-P

You can start short/finish short at Clapham Junction.

Try either

Ascot - Southampton Intl (location 1998)
Anytime Return
£29.95 Y-P

Valid to start/finish at Clapham Junction

You will probably need to go to a ticket office to buy this ticket.

Or:

Potters Bar - Southampton Airport Parkway
Off-Peak Return
£29.20

This ticket is restricted outbound only from Potters Bar to London, so would be valid from Clapham Junction/Waterloo at any time (although this might be disputed), and carries the return restriction 'not valid before 09:30'.

That's a new one for me.

Potters Bar - Southampton Airport Parkway
Off-Peak Return
£29.20

Blimey! Whatever you have in your tea to help you find those things, I want some too.

Absolutely brilliant.

Amazing thanks. Will give that a try.

I think that second ticket would be absolutely fine. However you might want to print out this page to bring along with you in case you get challenged. This is page lists the restriction text for the restriction code (5M) associated with your ticket.

When I try the Ascot one on raileasy it comes up with that ticket and fare, but gives a route only via Reading. When I put via CLJ it says there is no ticket options available.

Booking engines do not always interpret the Routeing Guide (the document that defines what permitted routes are) correctly.

If I were you, I would go with the second ticket personally.

But when I am on the 0812 from CLJ won't they ask how I got there so fast considering I couldn't have left Potters bar until 0937.

You can start short on that ticket, because there is no break of journey restriction on that ticket. There is no time restriction applicable to your journey from Clapham Junction to Southampton.

Alternatively if you feel more comfortable using the Anytime Return from Ascot, what I suggest you do is print out Page 11 of this document, which shows that Ascot to Southampton Group is valid on map combination WX+MW.

You can then print out both maps WX and MW from this document. You can trace Ascot - Clapham Junction - Basingstoke on map WX, and then Basingstoke - Southampton Group on map MW. This shows that the ticket is valid via Clapham Junction.

This should be sufficient proof that your route is valid. All these documents are from the National Routeing Guide.

This is because Raileasy and other booking engines are using an unpublished version of the Routeing Guide, which no longer permits travel via CLJ from Ascot to SOA.

It however remains valid, and if you buy this ticket you shouldn't have any difficulties.

Thanks again for the help everyone so far.

I don't mind which of these two options I book, I bow down to everyones superior knowledge on here that they are both valid for my journey.

However I have a £10 e-coupon in my RSH account. Ideally I'd like to use this on the booking.

However on RSH you can not put "Southampton Intl" as a destination, how come? Any way round it or idea of the best solution?

Thanks

Buy the potters bar ticket in that case

These are supposed to be connecting tickets for international travel, so require you to present your international travel document when booking these tickets, in theory at least. This explains why they are not normally available online.

They are available from any ticket office.

Sorry to bring this up again. I am ready to book the journey.

I am looking to book, on RSH, the option from Potters Bar to Southampton Airport.

I have found the fare you suggested, the £29.20 off-peak return with YP discount.

However.. to book the ticket via RSH I have to select an outbound train. The only one it suggests on THAT day, giving that ticket option, early morning is the 0018 departure from Potters Bar arriving at the Southampton Airport at 0652. I just want to confirm if I select that service to purchase the ticket, I don't ACTUALLY have to travel on those trains do it?

And if questioned by any guard on the train I actually WILL catch from Clapham, I will say I chose to 'break' my journey (as per the ticket conditions) at Clapham Junction earlier, and resume now (i.e. around the 0900 mark)... this is deffo TOTALLY allowed isn't it?

I will print out the page suggesting this service for the fare on RSH and that page someone here kindly linked showing that ticket restriction code conditions, in case the guard/inspector gets upperty about my ticket.

THANKS AGAIN

Just looking for one last reassurance before I go ahead and book.. I am very nervous about fines and criminal records etc.

Many Thanks ! :D

Yes, all is fine, there is no need to use the suggested trains, just throw the reservation away.

There wouldn't be a reservation coupon printed with the ticket anyway as both FCC and SWT are unreservable!

Happybunny, it may be easier just to say you are "starting short" on the ticket!

Are we saying Southampton Intl and Southampton Airport are the same price?

Any general advantages to using the Intl ticket?

Mr Megabus may also sort you out? They have services at 05.30 and 07.39 from London to Southampton, returning at 12.55 and 13.55. All call at Clapham Junction and the Airport so I'm sure you could sort something out? Deals won't be available for another few weeks for your required dates, but could be worth a look if it saves you some cash?!!

Note the following from the Megatrain conditions however:
" You must travel wholly between the origin and destination, on the date and at the time(s) in your booking confirmation. If you start, break and resume, or end your journey at any intermediate station you will need to buy a new rail ticket for the entire journey made. This rail ticket will be the price of the most appropriate undiscounted Single rail fare for the journey being made. No refund will be given on the megatrain ticket or additional ticket purchased. In addition, you may have to pay a Penalty Fare."
http://uk.megabus.com/terms.aspx#megatrain

Therefore, you would need to travel Clapham Jn-Waterloo-Southampton Ctl-Southampton Airport Parkway and purchase Clapham Jn-London Terminals and Southampton Ctl-Southampton Airport Parkway tickets in addition to the Megabus ticket.

*BUMP* Hello all

My trip is nearing !!!!

However, there is a twist. Upon arrival back at Southampton Airport now I will go to the Isle of Wight. I will be staying in Bembridge. What is the best way of doing this? I thought of getting a ship to Cowes then making my way to Bembridge. My friend said Cowes is far from Bembridge and I should take a train to Portsmouth Harbour and take a ship to Ryde??

Anyone got any ideas, and how it will link in with my current ticket back to London, thanks?
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

Looking at all the options, it takes an AGE to get from Southampton Airport to Portsmouth Harbour.

So I will get the train I think from Southampton Airport to Central, then the shuttle bus, then the Red Funnel to Cowes East. I am sure there is a bus or something from Cowes east to Bembridge when I get there.

That return option is only about £16, and when coming back the next day, as long as the train from Southampton Central to Clapham calls at the Southampton Airport, am I right in thinking I can use the two tickets in conjunction ?

Thanks again

All trains from Southampton Central call at Soton Airport Parkway. I'm not sure if there is a bus to Bembridge but you can either take a bus to Newport or to Ryde from East Cowes where you can change on to another bus towards Bembridge.

When you are you travelling? I may see you on the ship from Southampton to East Cowes. If you need any help with the Southampton area/Red Funnel/Isle of Wight then just give me a shout.
