Doctor Who: David Tennant returns for anniversary show

David Tennant and Billie Piper will appear in the 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who, the BBC has confirmed.

Tennant was the 10th Doctor and Piper played his on-screen companion Rose Tyler in the BBC One show.

Filming on the show, which will also star John Hurt, will start next week.

Tennant's successor, Matt Smith - also in the special with his new assistant played by Jenna-Louise Coleman - says fans "will not be disappointed" by the 3D show, due to air on 23 November.

Tennant and Piper have long been rumoured to be making a return for the special, which is being written by the show's executive producer and lead writer Steven Moffat.

In January, Piper, appearing on the Graham Norton show, denied she would be appearing.

"I wasn't asked, no," she said.

It seems David Tennant is to return for the "50th Anniversary Show" later this Year.

Personally I have been a little disappointed with the offerings so far in the current series.

For a 50th Show all the living Doctors or at least most of them should be involved aka "Five Doctors" of old.

More important DAVROS must return along with Daleks and Cybermen at the very minimum and The Master.

Mrs Greenback mentioned earlier that Tennant would be returning. I've also been a bit disappointed with the current series, though I have only seen the first two episodes so far. I thought last weeks offering was very poor.

I'd have thought that more Doctors would have been written in, since Peter Moffatt was more for multi-Doctor stories than Russell T Davies ever was. Unless they're planning a surprise.. But I reckon any other doctors would just be via flashback footage. I do so hope to be disappointed!

Would you agree a whole generation of Dr Who fans are growing up without exposure to Davros - who apart from the Doctor, in my view, is the most iconic character in the shows History

I thought the new Davros was excellent, a fine portrayal by Julian Bleach (who I am a big fan of) and that he should return.

But for me, The Master is probably more iconic than Davros! Sorry!

If Dr Who was that good at what he does, he'd bring back William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton.

David Bradley is portraying Hartnell in the new drama about the creation of the series. Now, I wonder if he might film an extra scene or two for the series itself while he's at it?!

One thing I'm pretty sure of (given the history of the show since it came back) is that there will be some surprises for the fans in there somewhere, and that they will not be announced or leaked like the Tennant story...

Like wise for me. Davros is brillant, but The Master is slightly ahead for me.

Will be a interesting episode as well. Also i am slowly becoming to like Matt Smith a lot more as well.

When Matt Smith was announced as the new Doctor Who, my other half and I both thought he would be awful and we would hate him. But we decided to give him a chance and right from day one we thought he was good!

I could see that working quite well - David Bradley playing William Hartnell playing Dr Who, but also playing Dr Who directly at the same time. That would be mind blowingly post modern

I'd also quite like to see Christopher Ecclestone turn up as well as he was brilliant at the start of the revival.

Mind you he's rumoured to be leaving at the end of the year , who should replace him ?

Misogynst moment - it can't be a woman can it

And just the sort of thing that might happen because it's so post modern!!!

The BBC would also get more value for money out of the costume and hairpiece

That would be a big surprise, as when he left the series he said he didn't want to return...or even give any more interviews about the role. But you never know!

I can see someone not wanting to do another series, but ruling out a one off seems a little churlish !

To be fair, he never looked as though he aged well in the first place

Why not bring back "a younger Davros" (if he ever existed) transporting himself to the future to wreak vengeance on The Doctor and that Dalek "kangaroo court" that convicted him

There might be a story to be told about the background of the Davros character. IIRC, he was a scientist in Skaro when first seen in Genesis of the Daleks. It might be interesting to see what started the war between the Thals and the Kaleds, and what made Davros into what he became.

Yes, it would be good to see what mad him so 'disfigured' when his primary scientific target of halting/reversing evolution, produced so many horrific beings in the aforementitled fourth doctor story. To complete the parallel, a Tom Baker cameo would be great! Just a shame Jon Pertwee isn't still alive, even though he'd be 93 I imagine he'd still do an anniversary episode :D

Apparently it was a Thal shell that hit his laboratory - some form of chemical ordinance.

From what I have heard so far, it sounds like Chirstopher Ecclestone will not be reutrning however, it is believed that Rose (Billy Piper) will be returning.

They could bring back Bernard Cribbins as Tom Campbell and Wilfred Mott and cause a temporal paradox that destroys the universe :)
