Approximately yes. Mainly because you have a break in the middle and because every test has a set of detailed instructions and a practice paper before starting the test!

Good luck.

Thanks RRV for that info, nice to know.

Geeves, you've done one or 2 tests then?

Hey Matt. Ive asked them for feedback so I can concentrate on that next time, but they havnt got back to me yet surprise surprise. Pretty gutted to be honest as I thought I had done pretty well! My colleague from Bolton is through so that fills up one of the two positions at Vic. I rang them yesterday to find out. Found out the tests were marked on Friday but they gave me some spiel that they were not ready (yesterday Morning). Eventually ended emailing another guy there at 16:00 hours to find out what was going on, and to his credit he rang me back straight away to give me the news.

I was waiting for them to call out the name Matt on the day and I would of come and talked to you, but i never heard it!

Just received my e-mail confirming I failed after last Thursday. No feedback received as yet.

Has anybody made into the talent pool? I was told that those who had achieved a particular score but not beaten other candidates would have their applications placed on hold, although I don't know what the chances are of securing a job this way.

Ah well, I'll try again in six months time or so. Does anybody know if having failed this time is likely to count against me? I know that you are only allowed a maximum of two attempts.

Just had an email inviting me to an interview for a drivers job at Manchester Victoria. Quite shocked to be honest.

Gutted for ya Mate; i know how much we all want these Jobs, When I failed on the Metrolink in Dec last year, I was mortified! Do you have anything else in the application stages?

I thought it was odd that names weren't called out, as you get to put a face to a name.

So you don't really want to know my news! Without wanting to rub salt in your wounds, I passed the assessment, I had the email earlier. But now comes the wait to see if i make it through to the May start! The email specifically states that this is not an offer of employment. But will know within the next 2 weeks.

No fair play to you. I'm already inside the railway so I can try again when ever. I presume you just have the medical to go.

So far in 3 years Ive had an interview for Guards that ended up dying due to the vacancy not existing. Then the interview and tests and failed. Perhaps 3rd time will be the charm!

Hi I had this generic email or so it seems, i got told i'd made it to this same stage last Monday & now today (Thursday) i've got another email saying

We have now completed the shortlisting process and can inform you that you have met the required criteria. However, as there were a high volume of successful candidates and only limited spaces available for interview we are unable to progress your application further at this time.

Funnily enough i've been through the interview stage and sat the assessment last week, got the email Monday to say i'd passed and waiting on a start date possibly in May. Very weird. :(

:EDIT: Just emailed them regarding this, had a reply. I've not made it on to the training course to start in May, gutted.

Bubba, was your interview for Vic?

Bubba, i've had an assessment with Northern for the trainee driver post in Leeds this week. As I had recently sat the assessments with FCC I was only required to go and complete the mechanical aptitude test as FCC don't do that test but Northern do.

The assessment day was run at DB Schenker in Doncaster. We did the mechanical aptitude test first and I was allowed to leave after that but the other 3 candidates then had the group bourden and dials test before lunch. If they passed those then they would take the reaction test in the afternoon followed by the structured interview.

I have no idea how many of the three finished the day as I was done by 9.45am. It was a different setup to FCC, where I had the tests over two days a week apart and had to wait ages to get my results. The test centre at Doncaster said they were going to tell candidates the same day. This may be due to the fact that there were only 4 of us at Doncaster whereas at FCC we started with 46 before the numbers dropped at lunchtime.

However, I don't think all the Northern assessment days are set out the same as I believe there are others members on here who took their assessments in Leeds over two days, rather than the one day that I would have done Doncaster.

Hope this helps! :)

The thing that is throwing me is that there is no mention of assessments. It is purely an interview and they attached to the invite email an interview guide telling me what to expect i.e. example based interview.

Oops sorry.
Just read youe message again and realised there was no mention of assessments! It's a conventional job interview. Usual questions apply. Why do you want the job, what do you know about Northern etc...

Hi W230,
We spoke on the morning just before we went in. After the mechanical aptitude we did the group bourdon, glop and dials. We then had a break and at that stage the girl who was with us was told that she had failed. The remaining 2 of us then went upstairs and did the reaction test. Once that had been completed we were told to wait by the vending machines and were called in one by one. The other guy went in first and came out shaking his head as he was led from the premises, i felt gutted for the guy. I was then called in told i had passed the tests and was given the free meal ticket that everyone goes on about. Before lunch i filled in the 5 questions that were to be the subject of the interview. The interview went really well and she told me straight after that i had passed the whole assessment to the standard that Northern require. Guess its back to the waiting game now. Did you find out how you got on?

Best Regards

Hi Bubba,
From what i can gather Northern now do the driver manager interview first before you go on to do the assessments, if you get through the interview you will then receive an e-mail inviting you to an assessment day. I was asked the same subjects that W230 posted earlier

Good luck on the day

Great! go through months of waiting (Dec 2011) Pass the Interview & assessments & I read that they've now pulled the conductor vacancies for Pic. 185 Is this 100% correct; as my conductor application is Y2011/110.

I'm all a bit confused really...

best get onto Northern tomorrow

Edit!

Just got a reply from Northern, No Conductor posts have been withdrawn from Piccadilly, i.e. Y2011/110

Hi Dugster, When I saw your post I guessed that it was probably you I had spoken to (there were only two other choices !!). Glad you passed. I passed the Mechanical Aptitude Test on the day which I was well pleased about.

However, since then FCC have emailed me to say that I now have a conditional job offer with them and I have my medical next week (they still won't give me a start date annoyingly though or tell me what depot i'm going to be working at!) Given the option of the two i'd choose Northern but the gf has just got a promotion to London so looks like it'll now be FCC instead.

Best of luck with the rest of the assessment process, which I guess would probably only be a medical beofre starting on 14th May. Ironically that's probably before I would start with FCC anyway!

Hi everyone, like Bubba above (Manchester train trainee)I also have an interview with Northern but I'm confused? What is the difference between the example based interview, the structured interview and the manager interview? My email doesn't say who will be interviewing me just that its an example based one. I've read through the old forums but it seems Northern have changed things up? Has anyone had an interview recently that can shed some light on what to expect?

Not sure what you mean by the example interview (I only sat my interview with Northern earlier this month so it can't have changed much). The manager interview is like a general job interview (see my earlier post in this thread). The structured interview (I believe formally called the criteria based interview) is part of the psychometric testing.

Try this for more info. Hope this helps!

Thanks w230 but I'm still not clear. As far as I was aware like Bubba said normally there used to be the Assessment Tests and Structured Interview followed by Manager Interview then Medical. But this is our first interview, the email calls it a example based interview but doesn't mention any assessments nor manager. So who will be interviewing us and will there be still a structured interview and manager interview at a later date?
